On the east side of Spartanburg, just off East Main Street on Fernwood Drive, a gray sanctuary with three tall stained-glass windows anchors a community that has gathered under the name Westminster Presbyterian Church since the late 1950s. From a single worship service launched with 125 charter members in 1959, the church has grown into a congregation of more than a thousand covenant partners who come together across three Sunday services, a full Wednesday evening of meals and programming, a Christian preschool, and a web of small groups that meet in homes and on campus.
Westminster describes itself as a Christ-centered, Bible-based church seeking to glorify God in all that it does. Its members are called covenant partners, and the church's stated mission is simply this: Love God, Love Others, and Serve Others. That mission is lived out in the rhythms of weekly worship, an unusually full midweek schedule, and dozens of partnerships with organizations serving Spartanburg and the world.
Three Sunday Services, Three Different Rooms for the Heart
Westminster offers three Sunday morning services with deliberately different tones, all of which are open to anyone walking through the doors.
8:00 AM - Prayer, Scripture, and the Table
The earliest gathering is an intimate and personal service built around prayer and teaching from Scripture. Hymns and readings amplify meditation, and the Lord's Supper is celebrated every week at this hour - including each Sunday of Advent and Lent. Children in 4K through 5th grade are dismissed before the sermon for their own Sunday School classes.
9:30 AM - A Family-Friendly Service with Modern Music
The middle service runs from 9:30 to about 10:45 AM and is described as a dynamic, family-friendly experience filled with Christ-centered teaching and modern music. It is livestreamed online, and communion is served on the first Sunday of every even-numbered month, as well as every week during Advent and Lent. A gluten-free, prepackaged communion kit is available in a basket by the server for those who need it.
11:00 AM - Traditional Hymns and Litanies
The 11 AM service includes traditional hymns, litanies of prayer and confession, and a biblical message, and typically ends by 12:10 PM. It is also livestreamed. Communion is observed on the first Sunday of every month, plus every Sunday of Advent and Lent.
Westminster practices communion by intinction, dipping the bread into the cup. Children are welcome to partake, although the decision is left to each family.
What to Expect on Your First Sunday
Visitors enter from the southeast side of the campus, where greeters stand ready to point the way to the sanctuary or to the children's check-in stations. Two children's check-in stations are marked on the campus map with yellow stars, and a safety officer is on site every Sunday along with a team monitoring the hallways.
Parking is available in any of the marked lots, and coffee, lemonade, and a small snack are waiting on the way in. Following the 8 AM service, everyone is invited to the welcome area for fellowship and coffee.
Dress is whatever feels right. The 8 AM gathering tends to draw a quieter, smaller crowd, the 9:30 AM crowd skews toward families, and the 11 AM service has a more traditional feel - but the dress code is simply come as you are.
A connection card is available for anyone who would like the church to follow up after a visit, and a campus map and visitor information are available on request.
Wednesday Nights Around the Table
From early September through mid-November, and again in the spring, Westminster's campus comes alive on Wednesday evenings. The Fall 2026 schedule runs from September 9 through November 11, with a special Thanksgiving Dinner and Service on November 18.
The Family Meal
The evening centers on a family meal served buffet-style in the gym from 5:15 to 6:10 PM. The cost is $8 per adult and $2 per child (for pizza), with a $30 family cap. The menu changes weekly - on the last Wednesday in September, for example, the offering is Brunswick stew over mashed potatoes, creamed corn, roasted cauliflower, rolls, and dessert. Reservations are made through the Church Center app or by calling the financial office by 6 PM on the Monday before.
KidsInc and WyldLife
At 6:15 PM, children gather in the sanctuary for KidsInc, which runs until 7:30 PM. After a large-group Bible lesson, kids split into small groups for discussion, music, and recreation, while younger children have childcare with their own age-appropriate Bible time. At the same time, middle schoolers head to the Emory Road House for WyldLife, the church's name for Young Life's outreach to sixth through eighth graders.
Adult Bible Studies, Handbells, and Choir
Adults gather in groups around the church for Bible study from 6:15 to 7:30 PM. Each semester brings a fresh slate of studies - in Fall 2026 these include Stringing Pearls (a devotional look at Old Testament stories), Come As You Are (a women's study of Heaven), a mentor group studying Joshua by Jen Wilkin, a study of the Sermon on the Mount, a conversation series called Worshiping with Our Kids, and a men's Gospel of John group. Childcare is provided for ages four and under during the adult hour.
Handbells (Ringers) rehearse from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, and the Chancel Choir gathers from 7:30 to 8:30 PM.
Westminster Day School - A Preschool Since 1963
Just inside the main campus sits Westminster Day School, a Christian preschool that has been in continuous operation since 1963, the year after the church first met in its own Fellowship Hall. Today the school serves children from six months through 4K, offering a developmentally appropriate, Christ-centered early education built around purposeful play.
Classrooms for the three- and four-year-olds follow a full curriculum aligned with the South Carolina State Curriculum Standards and NAEYC guidelines, with daily experiences in early literacy, math, science, art, music, fitness, and chapel. Infants and toddlers are cared for in warm, hands-on environments designed to spark curiosity. Tours are offered Tuesday through Thursday by appointment and can be scheduled by calling the school office.
The school operates from late August to mid-May on the calendar of Spartanburg District 7, with school hours from 8:45 AM to noon and office hours from 8 AM to 1 PM. Tuition is divided into nine monthly payments from September through May.
Children, Students, and Imprint
Children
The Children's Ministry Team teaches the Word of God while equipping families to walk alongside their children as they grow in faith. Sunday programming is offered at all three services, with nursery care for infants and toddlers and graded Sunday School classes for 4K through fifth grade. Children begin worship with their families and are dismissed to their classrooms right before the sermon.
KidsInc carries that same ministry into Wednesday evenings, and special family events - like the School Year Blessing, the third-grade Bible Presentation, and Bloom, an afternoon for fourth- through sixth-grade girls and their mothers - run throughout the year.
Imprint
Imprint is a ministry designed to make the whole life of the church accessible to individuals with exceptionalities, including those with hearing or visual impairments, cognitive or learning differences, neurological conditions, medical fragility, or physical access needs. Imprint provides mentors, Sunday School resources, and integration so that every individual can be a fully devoted follower of Christ within the congregation.
Students
Westminster's Student Ministries engage both students and parents, with a clear mission to encourage students in their relationship with Christ and others and to equip them with a proper theology of the faith. The ministry staff and a team of adult volunteers meet students where they are.
Sunday mornings at 11 AM, middle and high schoolers gather at the Emory Road House for food, fellowship, and Bible study that often follows the morning sermon series. Campaigners, a Bible study for high schoolers, meets every other Wednesday evening. WyldLife reaches sixth through eighth graders on Wednesday nights, and Young Life reaches ninth through twelfth graders on Monday nights - both at the Emory Road House, with summer camps at Southwind in Florida, Carolina Point in North Carolina, Frontier Ranch in Colorado, and Windy Gap in North Carolina.
Adults: Smaller Communities All Week Long
Westminster uses the phrase smaller communities to describe its network of adult small groups. The church lists more than 25 of them, gathering in homes, on campus, and online across nearly every day of the week.
Sunday Morning Adult Bible Studies
On Sundays, four adult Bible studies meet at 9:30 AM - Truthseekers (a study of Genesis led by Lynne Poole), Friends in Faith (a discussion group led by Mike Bryan), and a Sermon-Discussion group led by Jennifer and Stewart Chason - and six meet at 11 AM, including Seekers (a study of Romans), a Sermon-Discussion group led by Justin Lewis, an Acts 2:42 group, a Parents of Young Children class, and a Young Adults group studying the Essentials of Faith series through RightNow Media.
Men's Groups
Men meet at 6:15 AM on Mondays and Thursdays at the Emory Road House with Senior Pastor Steve Wise, at 7 AM on Mondays with David Smith at the Pineville Road House, at 6:30 AM on Thursdays at the church with Claude Saleeby, at noon on Thursdays for the Lunch Bunch at Eggs Up Grill, and on Wednesday evenings for a Gospel of John study. A young men's group gathers at 6 AM on the first and third Fridays. An annual Men's Retreat is held each fall.
Women's Groups
Women meet on Monday afternoons with Randi Berry, on Tuesday evenings at the Wise home with Blair Kyle, and on the second Tuesday of each month for the Encouragement Circle in the Parlor with Annette Porter and Becky Manatis. A Women's Community Bible Study runs on Wednesday mornings in Fellowship Hall during the fall and spring semesters, and a Wednesday evening Come As You Are study meets in the Pineville Road House. Two Bible-in-a-Year Expedition groups meet on Thursdays at 4 and 5 PM. A women's exercise group meets Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings at 8 AM.
Couples and Other Groups
Couples meet on Sunday evenings with Mike and Connie Bryan and on Tuesday evenings with Jane Nicol. A parenting group led by the Dawes and Dunlavey families gathers on Wednesday evenings. A mentoring group for young mothers studies Joshua by Jen Wilkin, and the 39ers - a fellowship for those aged fifty and older - meets monthly for a $5 luncheon and program from January through May and September through December.
His Hands: A Congregational Care Team
While many Presbyterian churches have deacons, Westminster has a dedicated Congregational Care team called His Hands. The team shares Christ's love by recognizing and responding to the needs of covenant partners, with sub-teams devoted to hospital visitation, home visitation, a prayer blanket ministry, a circle of meals, transportation, prayer partners, bereavement hospitality, handyman help, a freezer ministry for families in crisis, health and wellness, prayer requests, seasonal greeting cards, and notes of encouragement.
GriefShare and DivorceCare
Two support ministries meet weekly on the campus and are open to people of any faith background.
GriefShare gathers on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 2:30 PM in Room 5 of the Pineville Road House (104 Pineville Road). The 13-week rolling program is built around video seminars, small-group discussion, and a workbook, and participants can join at any point in the cycle.
DivorceCare meets on Thursdays at 6:30 PM in Room 3 of the Pineville Road House. The 13-week Christian-based program is designed to help people navigate separation and divorce, with participants welcome to enter at any time.
Serving Spartanburg and the World
Westminster is deeply woven into Spartanburg's network of service organizations. The church partners locally with TOTAL Ministries (which receives Westminster's referrals for financial assistance), the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen (where WPC volunteers prepare and serve meals on the fourth Sunday of every even-numbered month), Come Closer Spartanburg, Faith Homes, Greater Spartanburg Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, JUMPSTART Ministries, Mobile Meals, Ruth's Gleanings, St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic, the YMCA, the Carolina Pregnancy Center, the Children's Advocacy Center, Faith for Fathers, Hope Center for Children, School Ministries of Spartanburg County, Sidewalk Hope, and Thornwell.
The church's youth outreach includes Young Life, Young Lives, the Young Life chapter in Brevard, North Carolina, CRU's college ministry, and Kids Club of the Upstate.
A Way Home is a current initiative that brings local churches together to provide housing and meals for homeless Spartanburg families. Westminster is building a team to serve at a nearby host site, with overnight hosts, meal providers, and donations all part of the effort.
International mission partners include 516 NOW in Nicaragua, Mission Emanuel in the Dominican Republic (with a short-term trip planned for June 24 - 30, 2028), the Egyptian Church in Shoubra and Cairo, ECO Brazil, Friends of India, Global Teams, Haggai International's Europe division, Kukura Neshungu Institute in Zimbabwe, CRU Taiwan, Set Free, Water Mission, World Relief of the Upstate, and Young Life Latin America and the Caribbean.
A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians
Westminster belongs to ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, a denomination the church joined in 2013 after several decades in the Presbyterian Church (USA). ECO provides leadership and encouragement to the elders and the broader congregation and engages in conversations about mission, discipleship, and worship.
Theological convictions are anchored in Scripture and the historic Reformed confessions. The Westminster Confession of Faith, the Westminster Shorter and Larger Catechisms, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Nicene and Apostles' Creeds, and the Theological Declaration of Barmen all serve as faithful expositions of the Word of God. The church confesses the Trinity, the full deity and full humanity of Jesus Christ, salvation by grace through faith, the authority of Scripture, the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, the priesthood of all believers, and the call to live in obedience to God's Word in every area of life.
At Westminster, members are called covenant partners rather than members, reflecting a commitment to walk together in mutual care, accountability, and service.
Stained Glass and Sanctuary
Inside the sanctuary, three lancets of faceted stained glass designed by the Willet Stained Glass Studios of Philadelphia rise behind the chancel under the theme The Cross and The Light. Christ on the Cross stands at the center, surrounded by a sunburst of light, while buildings, factories, and homes at the base of each lancet depict the world that the Triune God has touched. The left lancet honors God the Father as Creator, with His hand revealing the sun, moon, and stars. The right lancet honors God the Holy Spirit as God with us and within us, symbolized by a descending dove and seven flames representing the seven gifts of praise, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and strength from Revelation 7:11. The center lancet, depicting Christ on the Cross, overlaps the other two and stretches over the cities below, signifying the Mediator who links heaven and earth.
The sanctuary was completed in 1970. The organ was dedicated in 1991, and the gym and kitchen were added in 1987. The Willet windows anchor a worship space designed to focus the eye on the Cross and the light that surrounds it.
Joining the Church
Westminster welcomes newcomers and members alike. A New Member Class is offered several times a year - in October 2026, it runs as a Saturday session on October 10 (9 AM to noon) or as two Wednesday evenings on October 7 and 14 (6 to 7:30 PM), with a Join Day on Sunday, October 18 that includes a meeting with the Session and a celebratory lunch. Classes cover why to join a church, what Christians believe, what Presbyterians believe, and how to grow in faith at Westminster.
Joining the church does not require a transfer of membership from another church; instead, Westminster believes in a personal get-to-know-you process. Children twelve and under generally wait to join and participate in a Youth Covenant Partner Class in January aimed at sixth-graders and older, while children thirteen and older are welcome to attend the adult New Member Class with their parents.
Giving, Church Center, and the Weekday Rhythm
Online giving is available through the Church Center app, where covenant partners can set up one-time or recurring gifts by electronic check. Pledge commitments for the following year are made together as a congregation each October.
Church Center is also the main hub for small group sign-ups, event registration, the church directory, and announcements. The app is available for Apple and Android, and a desktop version is accessible through Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari. RightNow Media, sometimes described as the Netflix of Bible Study videos, is offered free of charge to anyone connected to WPC, with thousands of family-safe studies for children, youth, parents, and married couples.
Worship services are livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook Live, and past services are available on the Boxcast app on Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire. Audio-only versions are available through Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Weddings, Pastoral Care, and Office Life
Weddings at Westminster are available to active members and to sons or daughters (or grandchildren) of active members. Couples begin by contacting one of the pastors and then emailing the weddings address or calling the church office. A $200 deposit confirms the date on the calendar, and pre-marital counseling, music planning, and the marriage license all follow a clear timeline laid out in a wedding notebook.

More than six decades after that first service in Spartanburg High School, Westminster Presbyterian Church continues to gather on the same stretch of Fernwood Drive, serving a community of believers who call themselves covenant partners - and who, each week, gather around tables both in the gym on Wednesday nights and at the Lord's Table on Sunday mornings.
