A Welcoming Lutheran Home on Clayton Road

Trinity Lutheran Church sits on Clayton Road in Chesterfield, Missouri, where it has gathered as a congregation for more than a hundred years. Members describe the parish as a lighthouse for West St. Louis County, a place where families come to grow in the love of Christ and where the rhythms of traditional Lutheran worship still shape every Sunday morning.

The church's vision is summed up in two short sentences that appear throughout the building and on its outreach: "You Matter to God! You Matter to Us!" Its mission is to be the hands and feet of Christ in the community. That pair of phrases - welcome and service - frames everything from the worship bulletin to the preschool classrooms and the monthly mission emphasis.

Word and Sacrament, Every Sunday

Trinity currently offers one Sunday worship service, at 10:00 AM, in person and online. The service is steeped in traditional Lutheran liturgy and centered on Word and Sacrament. Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday, and all Christians are welcome at Christ's table. Children who have not yet made their First Communion are invited forward to receive a blessing.

Music is anchored by organ and piano, with hymns drawn from the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal and additional songs from the Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) catalog. Director of Music Ministry Brian Parrish leads special music connected to the Gospel, and organist Jonathan Owen supports the congregation's singing. Children's Music Minister Graeme Allen helps the youngest worshippers take part.

More Than a Century on Clayton Road

Trinity has been part of West St. Louis County for more than 100 years. The congregation's about page speaks of Trinity as a lighthouse, shining forth with the light of Christ across generations of families who have walked through its doors. That long history is visible in the cemetery on the property, in the preschool that has welcomed young children since 1957, and in the continuity of a weekly worship pattern that has not changed in spirit even as the surrounding community has grown.

The church is a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), gathered in the Central States Synod. The congregation's core statement is simple and direct: "In Christ, we aspire to journey with one another in Grace, Faith, Love, and Service."

What Lutherans Believe at Trinity

Trinity worship follows the basic Lutheran pattern. The community gathers, hears God's Word, shares a meal at the Lord's Table, and is sent into the world. The church teaches that worship is fundamentally about what God is doing - saving people through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ - and about the congregation's response to that action.

Baptism is understood as a daily covenant. The community lives within the promises God made at the font: to live among God's faithful people, to hear the Word and share the Lord's Supper, to proclaim the good news in thought, word, and deed, to serve all people following Jesus' example, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.

At Communion, Trinity celebrates the Last Supper and teaches that Christ's body and blood come to the table not merely symbolically, but as a true presence. All Christians are welcome, and children who have not yet received First Communion are invited forward for a blessing.

Sunday School, Confirmation, and Youth LEADing Youth

Children's ministry at Trinity follows children from the nursery through graduation day. Sunday School meets at 9:00 AM on Sundays from September through May. Children ages 3 through 2nd grade gather in Room 7 for Bible stories, crafts, and games, while 3rd through 5th graders meet in the upstairs Music Room. Lessons use the Truth & Spirit Bible curriculum together with the Narrative Lectionary and a practice called Faith5 - a five-step ritual of sharing highs and lows, reading a Bible verse, talking about its meaning, praying for one another, and offering a blessing.

Vacation Bible School continues the formation each summer. Children's Ministry Coordinator Stacey Drake oversees this work.

Confirmation is a three-year journey for students in grades 6 through 8, meeting on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM and taught by Pastor Chris Naig. Students affirm their baptismal faith at the end of 8th grade.

For middle and high schoolers, Youth LEADing Youth (YLY) is programmed by the teens themselves, for the teens - with support from parents and pastoral staff. Students plan and lead their own monthly meetings and service activities, deciding together where the group's charitable giving and ministry focus should go. Every volunteer who works with children or youth completes Child Safety Training - a short video, quiz, policy review, and background check - before serving.

Trinity Preschool: A Ministry Since 1957

Trinity Preschool has been a weekday ministry of the congregation since 1957, making it one of the older preschool programs in the area. The school partners with parents to offer a Christ-centered, nurturing environment for children ages one through five, with certified teachers leading each class from age three through Junior Kindergarten.

The program uses Handwriting Without Tears, integrates STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math), and gives children weekly music lessons, time in a Maker Space, and a weekly gathering called Bible at the Boat for singing, a short devotional, and prayer. Each class presents a Christmas program and an end-of-year music program for families.

Director Christy L. Cole, M.Ed., leads the school. Classes run from 9:00 AM to noon on various weekday combinations, with afternoon enrichment and STEM options for older students. SonRise and Lunch Bunch enrichment programs offer additional half-day and lunch-time experiences throughout the fall and spring sessions.

Five Core Missions and a Heart for Service

In 2021, the Mission Committee narrowed Trinity's missional focus to five core partners - Gateway 180, Circle of Concern, Meals Do Matter, Lantern Hill, and Trinity Preschool itself. Each is highlighted twice a year through a Mission of the Month emphasis and again during the congregation's God's Work. Our Hands. Service Sundays in September and May.

Gateway 180 serves families facing homelessness in the St. Louis region. Circle of Concern provides food and other assistance to neighbors in need. Meals Do Matter prepares and delivers meals to people in the community. Lantern Hill is a global partner, and ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Relief extend Trinity's reach beyond St. Louis. Service projects focus on these five partners and are paired with fellowship and a shared meal, often a chili lunch in the Trinity Gym.

Stephen Ministry and Pastoral Care

Trinity trains and deploys Stephen Ministers - lay caregivers who provide regular, confidential, one-to-one support to people in the congregation or community going through difficult seasons. Anyone in the church family can be referred to the program by a pastor, by another member, or by self-request. A Stephen Minister Leader explains the program, and a Stephen Minister is assigned based on personality, experience, and gender. Care receivers meet with their Stephen Minister as long as the support is needed, and confidentiality is strictly maintained.

Pastoral care is led by The Rev. Chris Naig, who serves as pastor, and The Rev. Roy Christell, who serves as pastor emeritus. Anyone can submit a prayer request online, and the pastoral team prays over each request personally. Visitors who would welcome a call or note from a pastor can request one when they reach out.

Trinity Cemetery and Columbarium

Behind the church, Trinity maintains a cemetery and a columbarium that provide a peaceful final resting place for members and their loved ones. The cemetery offers single grave plots, single urn grave plots, and burial at several depth options, with pricing published on the church's cemetery page. Plot purchases and burial arrangements are coordinated through the church office.

A Building That Serves the Community

Trinity's building does more than host Sunday worship. The congregation makes its facilities available to outside groups for one-time or short-term use, with priority given first to congregation programs and members, then to nonprofits supported by the church, and then to other nonprofit organizations. The space hosts the Trinity Gym, a Maker Space for preschoolers, music rooms, and rooms for small groups, fellowship dinners, and book club gatherings.

Trinity Dinner Groups bring members and preschool families together for relaxed meals around a shared table. A Trinity Book Club, small groups for men and women, fellowship potlucks, and Facilities Improvement volunteers round out the rhythm of congregational life beyond Sunday morning.

Getting Connected

Newcomers and visitors are welcomed warmly. There is no dress code - worship casual fits comfortably alongside Sunday best - and children are encouraged to stay in worship with their families. Adult Forum at 11:15 AM (September through May) is a natural place to ask questions and meet others.
