A 77-Acre Campus in the Heart of Putnam County
Teays Valley Church of God sits on a rise at 185 Connection Point in Scott Depot, just east of Rocky Step Road and a short drive off Interstate 64's Exit 40. From a 77-acre campus in the heart of fast-growing Putnam County, the congregation has spent years pouring itself into the surrounding neighborhoods through experiential worship, Bible-based teaching, and a wide range of ministries for every age. The church's stated mission is to help every person engage in a growing relationship with Jesus, and that mission shows up in everything from a seasonal children's program to a free disc golf course open from dawn to dusk.
The motto "Connecting Our Community to Christ" greets visitors at every entrance, and the team behind it has turned the property into a recreational hub for all of Putnam County. Putnam County's growth has stretched public parks thin, and the church has opened its grounds to fill the gap with walking trails, a children's playground, a picnic shelter that seats 100, a nine-hole disc golf course, and restroom facilities available to anyone in the community. The two gymnasiums and banquet facility are also available to rent for parties and special groups by calling the church office.
Joining on Sundays and Wednesdays
Sunday morning begins with Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. for kids, youth, and adults, followed by the main worship service at 10:15 a.m. A Wednesday evening service takes place at 6:45 p.m. The Sunday gathering typically runs about an hour and fifteen minutes and opens with a mix of new and traditional worship music. Dress runs the full spectrum, from Sunday best to blue jeans, and the church makes it plain: come as you are. Coffee is part of the welcome, and greeters are posted to help newcomers find their way. Children from birth through fifth grade may be checked in to Kids Point before Sunday School or the main service.
For those who want to take a look before stepping inside, services are livestreamed on YouTube, and giving is available online.
A Worship Life Rich in the Arts
Worship at Teays Valley Church of God draws on a wide palette. The Voices of Praise Choir, a seasonal sanctuary choir for anyone in sixth grade and up, sings twice a month and welcomes any believer with a joyful heart. The worship team and praise band rotate weekly and lead from a state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and media system that has been upgraded to help the congregation tune out distractions and focus on God. An orchestra is being developed for anyone who has played in high school band or beyond.
The arts go beyond music. Drama, worship dance, banners, chalk drawings, painting, sign language interpretation, spoken testimonies, videos, and actors in skits regularly appear in services. Worship dance is treated as one of the body-language ways the church visually expresses love for Jesus, and modesty is required at all rehearsals and services where worship dance offerings take place. Members of the worship arts teams must profess a personal relationship with Christ, pursue a holy life according to Scripture, and demonstrate an attitude of worship both on and off the platform. The worship band rehearses on Wednesday evenings after church and again on Sunday mornings before services, and the choir is open to anyone in sixth grade and up who professes faith in Christ.
Kids Point: Birth Through Fifth Grade
Kids Point is the church's children's ministry, and the goal is to help kids build a relationship with Jesus early. Babies and toddlers learn through worship songs, age-appropriate lessons, and loving leaders. Preschoolers and kindergartners discover who they are in Christ through Bible stories, songs, crafts, and games. Elementary kids dive into the Bible through interactive lessons, games, and worship, learning three basic truths each month: God made me, God loves me, and Jesus wants to be my friend forever.
Check-in for Kids Point begins in the hallway to the left as visitors enter the lobby. Each child receives a nametag and the parent or designated adult receives a matching pickup tag that must be presented to retrieve the child. The nursery is on the lower level near check-in. Every Kids Point classroom volunteer over 18 passes a background check, and each classroom has at least two volunteers present at all times. Parents are welcome to walk their children to class.
Sunday morning Life Groups at 9:00 a.m. include Nursery and Toddler (newborn to 3 years), Preschool (ages 4 to 6), and Elementary (grades 1 to 5). During the 10:15 a.m. service, the nursery serves newborns up to 14 months, the Walkers class serves 12 months to 2 1/2 years, Toddler 2-3 serves ages 2 1/2 to 3 years, and Preschool-Kindergarten (ages 4 to Kindergarten) and Elementary grades 1 to 5 each have their own rooms. On Wednesday nights, Nursery and Toddler serves children ages 6 months to 3 years, Preschool-Kindergarten serves ages 4 to 6, and Elementary serves grades 1 to 5.
Move Student Ministries
Move Student Ministries serves students in grades 6 through 12 with the goal that every student who walks through the door feels loved, valued, accepted, and known. Sunday mornings begin with Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. and a prayer time at 10:00 a.m. before the main service. Wednesday evenings run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and feature worship, a sound biblical message, small group time, games, and free food. Move students also have the opportunity to gather with students across Putnam County, the state, the country, and the world through state, national, and international youth conferences.
Women, Men, and the Young at Heart
The CWC Group, or Christian Women's Connection, meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. for fellowship, prayer, and to support local, state, and national missions efforts. Women in the Word is a monthly Bible study held on the third Thursday of each month, with both a 9:30 a.m. and a 6:30 p.m. session available. Free weekly exercise classes are also part of the women's ministry lineup: a stretch and strengthening class on Monday nights at 6:00 p.m. (bring a mat and block) and an aerobics class on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. (bring hand weights).
The men's ministry meets monthly for shared meals, golf outings, and community work projects. A men's Bible study meets regularly on the church campus.
The Young at Heart Ministry is for those 55 and older. It gathers on the third Wednesday of each month at noon for a carry-in lunch and meets quarterly for evening activities. The group also takes trips and prepares goodie baskets for shut-ins. A separate in-depth Bible study called Holy Grounds meets on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. and includes regular fellowship.
Sports and Wellness on the Property
The Sports and Wellness Ministry opens several of the church's facilities to the wider community. Pickleball is played on Mondays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Open Gym Basketball runs on Mondays from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. The children's playground, walking trails, and disc golf course are all open from dawn to dusk.
Connection Point Disc Golf
Connection Point Disc Golf opened in December 2020 on the church property and winds across a challenging par 3 course minutes from I-64. It is open year-round from dawn to dusk and is free to play, closed only during Sunday morning services and Wednesday evening church services. Beginners and seasoned throwers both use it, and its location on the church grounds makes it a natural stop for families and youth groups.
GriefShare
GriefShare is a friendly, caring support group for people who have lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend. The program runs weekly and offers a $20 workbook; classes are otherwise free. Participants can request information through the church office and a staff member will follow up.
HEARTBEAT of the Valley
HEARTBEAT of the Valley got its start at Teays Valley Church of God but has expanded to serve the broader community. It offers education services focused on teaching parents how to be better parents, and relies on community and services like support groups, activities, tangible assistance, and family education classes. Each parent receives insightful information on how to improve life skills and be the best possible parent for their family.
What We Believe
The church affirms belief in one God who is the Creator and Ruler of the universe, the Father of Jesus Christ, and the source of every need. Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God whose death on the cross is the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. He rose from the dead, lives forevermore, and is the only way to God. The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son, the Comforter who dwells in the hearts of believers, convinces them of the truth of Christ's teachings, helps them live holy lives, and serves as the guarantee of relationship with God and the source of Christian unity.
People are by nature sinful and cannot make themselves good; righteousness comes only through accepting God's forgiveness for sin through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, which gives new life in Christ. The Bible is the infallible and inspired Word of God and the only guide for what to believe and how to live. There is one universal church made up of every race who believe in Jesus Christ, regardless of denominational affiliation, with Jesus Christ as its Head and its members as His Body.
The church observes three ordinances instituted by Christ in the new covenant: baptism, communion, and footwashing. Communion is observed monthly. Footwashing is an annual, special service on Thursday before Easter.
