A Country Church at the Heart of the Harricanes
Stony Hill Baptist Church sits on Stony Hill Road in the rural, rolling country that gives the surrounding historic area its nickname, the Harricanes, just outside Wake Forest, North Carolina. Drivers heading down the road find a white wood-frame sanctuary ringed by farmland that, in the church's earliest decades, grew cotton and corn and supplied milk to the wider community. Founded on November 22, 1884, Stony Hill has been the steady gathering place for that neighborhood for more than 140 years, and it remains a place to worship, grow in faith, and look after neighbors in need.
From a Brush Arbor to a White Church on the Hill
Before there was a church building, there was a brush arbor. Locals gathered under a makeshift shelter, men in overalls stretching fish nets over a wooden frame and piling leaves and branches on top for shade, while women sat on the ground catching up on the news of the day. Once the congregation organized formally, twenty-four members met in a two-room schoolhouse about half a mile from where the present sanctuary stands.
That schoolhouse served the church for nearly half a century. In 1929, the members voted to enlarge their meeting space "so that we could give the folk a comfortable seat," and the following year they raised a white, wooden church on the hilltop that still anchors the property. Members donated trees from their own land; the timber was sawn at a nearby mill, planed, and painted white to become the walls, floors, and pews. A steeple was added in 1976, and the building continues to serve as the Sunday gathering place for what is still a close-knit Missionary Baptist body.
Sunday Morning Worship at 10
Worship gathers each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in Stony Hill Chapel. Services run through 11:30 a.m. and center on Bible-based preaching, congregational singing, and prayer. Members describe the tradition as solidly Bible based, holding that Scripture is the true word of God given to guide life, that Jesus Christ is God's only begotten Son sent to save from sin, and that salvation is received by faith in Him. Visitors are warmly invited, and the church regularly reminds first-time guests through Ephesians 2:8: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God."
Helping Hands: A Ministry Born Around a Kitchen Table
The best-known outreach of Stony Hill is Helping Hands, a meal-and-fellowship ministry founded in April 2000 by Carolyn Bailey, Eva Keith, and JoAnn Rogers. The three women met in JoAnn's home to talk about how the church could express Christian sympathy after the passing of a member. Their plan was simple: prepare a sit-down meal at the Stony Hill Community House for family and friends following burial services, or deliver food to the home if the family preferred. Eighteen charter members signed on, and the ministry has grown steadily ever since, sustained by the cooking and giving of many volunteers.
Helping Hands has become a practical expression of the church's larger calling: to glorify God by worshipping Him, growing together in faith, serving the community, and sharing the joy of salvation. Anyone who loves serving the Lord can join the ministry; the current president is Eva Mae Keith.
Honoring Veterans at the Memorial
Each year the church pauses to remember the men and women of the United States military at the Veterans Memorial on the Stony Hill Road grounds. The Veterans Day service draws together veterans, active-duty service members, and their families, with readings from John 15:13 ("Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends") and a closing prayer of healing, strength, and hope. Members and neighbors alike are invited to take part in the time of reflection.
The Family Life Center and Weekly Leadership Rhythm
A separate Family Life Center (FLC) on the property hosts the church's Tuesday evening rhythm. Leadership worship and meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and run to 9:00 p.m., giving deacons, ministry leaders, and volunteers a regular space to plan, pray, and prepare for the Sunday gathering to come. The space also opens up for fellowship events such as the annual White Elephant Social.
