On a stretch of Crawford Street near downtown Houston, just across from the campuses that shape the Third Ward, St. John's Downtown Church has spent more than three decades building a single, focused rhythm: a 9 AM Sunday worship service, supported by a wide network of weekly prayer calls, support groups, small-group ministries, and outreach programs that have grown into some of the city's most visible responses to homelessness, hunger, and reentry after incarceration. The congregation, part of the United Methodist Church's Texas Annual Conference, is led today by Senior Campus Pastor Tiffany Tarrant and a large volunteer team that also includes her predecessors, Pastors Rudy and Juanita Rasmus, now serving as Pastors Emeritus.

Sundays at 9 AM: One Service, In Person and Online

St. John's Downtown runs a single weekly worship service on Sunday mornings at 9 AM, offered two ways at once. Members and visitors can gather in person at the church's Crawford Street building, and those at home can join through the church's livestream at stjohnsdowntown.online.church or on YouTube. Recent sermons stay available on the church's YouTube channel for anyone who missed the morning broadcast.

Long-time members joke that the Parking Lot Ministry is the first ministry a guest meets, since the parking team is positioned to set the tone for worship before anyone walks through the doors. Ushers and Greeters take over from there, helping with seating and making sure latecomers feel welcome. The church's stated welcome is direct: "No matter your color, background, or beliefs you are free to come and worship with us however you feel comfortable."

Worship runs alongside children's and youth programming. The Kidz Club Children's Ministry serves children ages 3 to 11 during the 9 AM service, with parents encouraged to drop children off and worship with their attention undivided. On the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, the Y2K Youth Ministry gathers middle and high school students during the same service for conversations, team-building, and Scripture-based life application. Baptisms are offered the second Sunday of each month, immediately after the 9 AM worship service, and anyone interested can register online.

From a Living Room of Nine to a Movement Downtown

St. John's Downtown began in 1992, when Pastors Rudy and Juanita Rasmus founded a church with nine members in the city of Houston. The Rasmuses co-pastored the congregation for thirty-one years and built it from those nine founding members into a community of thousands worshipping each week, both in person and through what the church now calls its Online Campus. The couple transitioned to emeritus status in 2022, and in June 2023 Pastor Tiffany Tarrant was appointed Senior Pastor after eight years serving as Lead Campus Pastor.

Pastor Tiffany's connection to the church goes back to childhood; she first walked through the doors of St. John's when she was seven years old. A Houston native, she holds a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Houston-Downtown and a Master of Divinity from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, and she continues to serve on boards including the Texas Southern University Wesley Foundation and the United Methodist Church's Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry under the Texas Annual Conference. The Rasmus family legacy continues; Pastor Rudy and Pastor Juanita, married for more than three decades, are the parents of two daughters, Morgan and Ryan, and grandparents whose family stories remain woven through the church's history.

Pastor Tiffany's personal motto is "I love you and there is nothing you can do about it."

Bread of Life and the Knowles Temenos Apartments: Feeding and Housing Houston

St. John's Downtown's hunger work began in December 1992, just months after the church opened its doors, when Pastors Rudy and Juanita launched Bread of Life, Inc. The nonprofit started by serving 500 meals a day to people experiencing homelessness and has since grown into one of the largest hunger-relief operations in the city, distributing more than 9 tons of fresh produce every week alongside an array of support services for people facing housing instability and recovery.

Through Bread of Life, the church also runs Eco Life Employment LLC, a staffing agency that helps people with criminal histories re-enter the workforce, and operates Amazing KMAZ 102.5 FM, a community radio station reaching into the same neighborhoods. The Get Tested Project, housed at the church, offers HIV/AIDS testing and remains an active part of the ministry. Pastor Rudy has worked with Beyoncé on her tours to launch global anti-hunger initiatives, and Bread of Life now carries programs in countries far beyond Houston.

On the housing side, the Knowles Temenos Apartments, made possible by a major donation from Tina, Beyoncé, and Solange Knowles, provides 43 units of permanent supportive housing for people who have experienced homelessness. The Temenos CDC, a partner organization, manages additional supportive housing including an 80-unit community and a 15-unit apartment building for those most in need. The Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, developed with the help of Kelly Rowland, hosts community activities for young people and was used for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The newest project, Ramus Temenos Place, opens apartments for young adults aging out of foster care.

Children, Youth, and the Next Generation

The Kidz Club Children's Ministry describes itself as "the launching pad for our younger generations," serving children ages 3 to 11 during the 9 AM Sunday worship service. Programming includes age-appropriate Bible lessons, hands-on activities, and snacks, and the church describes its role this way: "It takes a village to raise a child. St. John's Downtown is the village." Parents register each week through a check-in system, and a Children's Ministry Volunteer Team supports the work on Sundays.

The Y2K Youth Ministry gathers middle and high school students on the 2nd and 4th Sundays during the 9 AM service, focusing on applying God's word to everyday life challenges. The youth program adds summer retreats, team-building activities, and small-group conversation throughout the year.

Young adults ages 19 to 29 are served by Y.A.C.H.T. (Young Adults Called to His Truth), which meets for outings, fellowship, and faith formation. The YA'll Pull Up Bible Study gathers on Wednesday nights, both on Zoom and in person at the TSU Wesley Foundation, 3809 Sampson Street. Children's Ministry, Youth, and Young Adult ministries are shepherded by the Next Generation Pastor, who is supported by the Director of Ministries and Leadership Development and a wider volunteer leadership team.

Mosaic Women and Lion's Heart Men

Mosaic Women's Ministry provides one of the broadest rhythms in the church. A daily 6 AM prayer and devotion call runs virtually each weekday, and a virtual Bible study meets on Saturday mornings at 10 AM. The book club, social outings, fellowship events, and recurring women's prayer call give participants a layered set of ways to connect throughout the week. A biannual women's retreat rounds out the calendar, and recent studies have included works by Rachel Risner.

Lion's Heart Men's Ministry mirrors the rhythm with its own weekday morning prayer call at 6:15 AM and a Wednesday evening Bible study at 6:30 PM. The 1st Saturday of every month brings Man Cave, a brunch Bible study that runs from 8 to 10 AM in Hope Hall at the church. The ministry also publishes a Zoom link for ongoing Bible study and runs men's service projects alongside its gatherings.

Couples Ministry supports dating, engaged, and married couples through biblical teaching and shared fellowship, and small-group leadership stretches across every generation of adult life at St. John's.

Connect Groups: A Season of Smaller Circles

Connect Groups are St. John's small-group system, and the way the church describes it sums up the philosophy: "We believe our congregation must grow larger and smaller at the same time." The model is modeled on the early church in Acts 2:46-47, with small groups meeting in homes and online to make the larger congregation feel like a village.

Track categories include Spiritual Growth, Community, Women's Groups, and Support, and the breadth of groups is one of the more unusual things about St. John's. The Creative Escape explores art and faith through painting, drawing, and other mediums. Afro Beats Yoga combines yoga sequences with vibrant rhythms for women, with sessions scheduled to return in spring. Body Movement gathers on campus for walking and light weight training as a wellness practice. Wealth Builder Wednesdays is a six-session virtual series on faith, finances, and future planning. Veterans & Family Support offers peer support for veterans and their families on the first Wednesday of each month. Blessing Bling teaches beginner jewelry making. Bringing Back Traditions gathers quilters who work with upcycled fabric. Getting Your Groove On teaches line dancing in a fellowship setting. Living Generously is a financial stewardship journey. Next Level Adulthood is being prepared as a new track.

Get Your Groove On adds a service twist: participants bring five donated items (food, business attire, toiletries) for the TSU Wesley Pantry, folding the dance night into the church's wider hunger response.

Care, Compassion, and Confidential Support Groups

The Care and Compassion ministry, led by Pastor Rick Nance, walks alongside the congregation through illness, hospitalization, bereavement, hospice, and any of life's harder chapters. Through its C.A.R.E. framework (Caring, Arms, Reaching, Everywhere), the team facilitates funerals, memorials, visitations, prayer requests, and cards of encouragement. Over the past year, nearly 100 funerals, memorials, and celebrations of life have been facilitated through the ministry.

A weekly rhythm of confidential support groups runs alongside. The Mental Health Support Group meets every Monday at 7 PM via Zoom. The Grief Support Group and the Family Support Group both meet on Tuesdays at 6 PM via Zoom. An anonymous, in-person support group for people struggling with drug abuse meets at the Crawford Street campus on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. A curated guide to crisis lines lists resources for Harris, Fort Bend, and surrounding counties, plus the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and a Spanish-language crisis line.

Path to Freedom, the church's prison and re-entry ministry, works from Hebrews 13:3 ("Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them"). The Path meets in person at 5:30 PM every Thursday at St. John's, with an additional gathering on the first Sunday of each month in the lobby after worship. The Health and Wholeness Ministry complements this work with education, advocacy, and participation in the annual AIDS Walk.

What SJD Believes

The church describes itself around four characteristics. Prayerful: committed to the power of prayer, holding steady "until God moves." Personal: every person is valued regardless of standing or status, with each petition treated as urgent. Purposeful: trials are embraced as a necessary part of Christian experience, anchored in Revelation 12:11: "We overcome by the blood of the Lamb, and the words of our testimony." Passionate: the same passion that drove Jesus' ministry is meant to drive the church's work today.

A recurring Scripture of the Week features a single verse with a brief reflection and prayer, inviting members to read, repeat, and remember it.

The Pastoral Team

Tiffany Tarrant serves as Senior Campus Pastor. Rudy and Juanita Rasmus continue as Pastors Emeritus. Christian Joseph is the Next Generation Pastor, overseeing children's, youth, and young adult ministries. Ricki L. Heard is the Teaching Pastor. Evon Boykins serves as Virtual Care Pastor, tending to the online congregation. Stephanie Wilkins is the Minister of Care and Compassion, working alongside Pastor Rick Nance, who leads the C.A.R.E. team. Robert Heard shepherds Lion's Heart Men's Ministry. Tahieta Gosey-Bailey directs support groups and recovery work. Damon Fraylon leads ministry leadership and development, and Kayla Alix is the Director of Ministries and Leadership Development.

Volunteer-led teams round out the pastoral staff including the Ministers of Praise liturgical dance ministry, the SJD Choir (which leads worship on fifth Sundays and special services), the Parking Lot Ministry, Ushers and Greeters, Helping Hands, Special Events (Celebrate Good Times), and the TouchPoint connection team that helps newcomers find a place to serve.
