Located along Grand Valley Road near the Maryland line in West Manheim Township, St. Bartholomew's United Church (ELCA) has been a steady presence in the Hanover, Pennsylvania community for more than 175 years. The congregation is known for its long Lutheran heritage, a strong music program that includes one of the few Sunday School orchestras still active every week, and a deep investment in neighbors facing hard times through the Hanover Area Council of Churches.
A Congregation Born in 1844
St. Bartholomew's story began on May 18, 1844, when Frederick and Elizabeth Bachman deeded one acre and two rods of land to the Lutheran and German Reformed congregations that together formed the church. The first building on the land was dedicated that August. In 1860 a group of members split off to build what is now the Wentz Meeting House, a historic site still tended by the congregation, where an annual service is held each year.
The original structure was destroyed by fire in 1878 during an oats harvest and rebuilt in 1879 as a two-story brick building. A bell tower was added in 1890, and two acres for a new cemetery were donated around the same time. By 1936 the congregation had outgrown the brick church, and a new building was dedicated on the site. The old structure came down to make room for a parking lot. From 1844 to 2000, St. Bartholomew's continued as a union church, with both United Church of Christ and Lutheran congregations sharing one building and its responsibilities. On September 17, 2000, members signed a new charter creating a single congregation known officially as St. Bartholomew's United Church (ELCA). The church marked its 175th anniversary in 2019.
Sunday Mornings at St. B's
Sunday worship begins at 9:30 a.m. and is livestreamed on YouTube for those who cannot attend in person. On the fourth Sunday of each month, the usual service is replaced by H.O.P.E. Worship: He Offers Peace Everyday, a contemporary style gathering aimed at a different kind of worship experience.
At 10:45 a.m., following worship, Sunday School classes meet year round for everyone from age 3 through high school, alongside two adult Sunday School classes. A Children's Message is part of the worship service, and families who prefer not to appear on the livestream or in social media posts can complete a photo opt-out form in the hallway.
Music That Stretches from the Bell Tower to the Classroom
Music has been a defining feature of St. Bartholomew's for generations. The church fields an adult vocal choir, a hand bell choir, and a youth choir, plus instrumentalists who join worship when the opportunity arises. The Sunday School orchestra, one of the few still active every Sunday in the area, lets younger musicians play alongside the adult groups. The chancel and the classroom share the same rehearsal tradition.
A separate YouTube channel hosts weekly yoga at the church for those looking for a different kind of midweek gathering in the building.
Faith Formation for Every Age
Christian education is built around the Sunday School hour and continues through the week and across the year. Beginning in seventh grade, students are invited into a two-year confirmation program during the school year, affirming the commitments made at baptism. A week-long Vacation Bible School runs each summer for ages 3 through grade 6. Youth events, both at the church and out in the community, build fellowship throughout the year.
The youth ministry has a long partnership with Camp Nawakwa. Alive Retreats at Nawakwa give confirmation-age students an overnight experience away from the building, and families can sign up for Family Camp at Nawakwa together.
Adults have two Sunday School options at 10:45 a.m., periodic Adult Night Out gatherings for fellowship and mutual support, and occasional guest speakers and presentations.
Reaching Out Beyond the Building
St. Bartholomew's supports a wide circle of local ministries with both money and hands-on labor. Through the Hanover Area Council of Churches, members volunteer with the Changing Lives Homeless Shelter (open since 2007 for singles and families in crisis), the Clothing Bank (Thursdays 9 to noon and the first Saturday of each month, 9 to noon), and the Provide-A-Lunch kitchens that feed homebound clients through Meals on Wheels Monday through Friday on four routes. New Hope Ministries, a primary community partner, runs a food pantry, rent and utility assistance, workforce development, transportation help, and medical referrals.
The church's Community Outreach Committee keeps a longer list of resources for anyone in the area who needs them, including THRIVE (support for survivors of domestic violence), the YWCA Safe Home, Olivia's House (grief support for children in Hanover), LIHEAP energy assistance, Roots For Boots and For The Love Of A Veteran (military and veteran families), St. David's UCC's medical supply closet, and VisionCorps (eye exams and glasses vouchers).
Locally, the congregation also backs Hoffman Homes for Youth and Homewood Retirement Home, supported Lutheran World Relief and several missionaries overseas, sent teams to Biloxi, Mississippi for Katrina relief, and participates each year in Wreaths Across America by sponsoring wreaths for the cemetery.
