Real People on AL-251
Sardis Springs Baptist Church sits along Alabama Highway 251 on the east side of Athens, Limestone County, in a setting that mixes rural roads with the steady growth of north Alabama. The church describes itself as a community of "real people, leading people toward a real Jesus," and the rhythm of the week at SSBC is built around that idea. Sunday morning brings the largest crowd, Wednesday nights bring the families back, and a calendar of LifeGroups keeps people connected in between.
A Sunday Morning at SSBC
Sunday School begins at 8:45 a.m. with classes for every age group, from preschool through adult electives. Morning Worship follows at 10:00 a.m. and runs a little over an hour, blending a few congregational worship songs with a sermon from the pastor. There is no dress code. Greeters meet people at the door, offer to walk them inside when it rains, and help newcomers find their way around the building.
Children who arrive with their parents are welcome to stay in the service, or families can use the children's area for kids from birth through fourth grade. Children are checked in and out through Planning Center, and every volunteer who works with kids has passed a background check. The children's wing is secured with access-controlled locks. For preschoolers through second graders, a children's moment during the service leads into KidSpring, a dedicated kids' worship time that dismisses before the sermon.
At 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, KidSpring and evening discipleship groups meet again, giving the church a third touchpoint on the same day.
Wednesday Nights Around the Table
Midweek programming at Sardis Springs has the feel of a family dinner that happens to include a Bible lesson. The youth service for students in grades 7 through 12 runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Wednesday is known for a full meal before the lesson, so newcomers are encouraged to come hungry.
For younger kids, Kids Mission Classes meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center. The class is open to every child from birth through sixth grade and rotates through missions-focused projects. At the same hour, adults gather for Bible study, and at 7:00 p.m. the choir gathers in the choir room for rehearsal, so a parent dropping off a student or a younger child can step straight into a class of their own.
Sunday School for Every Stage of Life
Sunday School is treated as the backbone of the church. The directory lists roughly fifteen classes on a single Sunday morning, each led by a named teacher and meeting in a specific room around the campus. Some of the highlights include a senior adult women's class in the sanctuary building, youth boys and girls classes on the upper and lower floors, a young adult class and a young married class in the basement and above the sanctuary, and a slate of adult co-ed and men's classes grouped by age and stage. There is also a third and fourth grade girls' class and a fourth through sixth grade boys' class on the Family Life Center's second floor.
Beyond Sunday morning, the church points newcomers toward LifeGroups, the small-group network that meets in homes and on campus throughout the week.
Children and Students
Children's ministry at SSBC serves kids from birth through sixth grade. In addition to Sunday School and KidSpring, the weekly Kids Mission Classes give children an early exposure to outreach. Safety is a repeated theme on the children's pages: secured rooms, paired check-in and check-out, and a written commitment that every children's worker has been background checked.
The student ministry, led by David Anderson, is built for grades 7 through 12 and meets Wednesday nights with dinner, teaching, and Life Groups. A signature event in the student calendar is World Changers Student Life Mission Camp, a week that combines worship, Bible study, community, and local mission projects. The camp's stated goal is for every student to leave changed by time with Jesus rather than by logistics or programming.
Men's and Women's Ministry
The men's ministry runs on two tracks. Brotherhood is the service arm, with men of all ages pitching in on mission projects in and around Limestone County and meeting quarterly for breakfast, devotion, and fellowship. Refuel is the personal renewal arm, gathering once a month for food, accountability, devotion, and shared testimony, a structure built on the idea that men need other men of God to sharpen them.
The women's ministry gathers for fellowship and shared projects throughout the year and hosts an annual Ladies Tea Party Banquet in the Family Life Center, with dinner, a guest speaker, special music, and nursery provided.
Senior Adults
The senior adult group is described as always active, and the church schedules regular trips, gatherings, and fellowship times for the 55-plus crowd. Charles Dean, the Associate Pastor, oversees this ministry alongside music and administration.
Music and Worship
Music is a full ministry rather than a single program. The choir rehearses Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and sings in the morning service, and the worship leaders blend congregational singing with a Sunday morning message from the pastor. Charles Dean, who has served as Minister of Music and Senior Adults since 2018, anchors this ministry and points to Psalm 150 as a guide for worship that praises the Lord, nurtures believers, and reaches those in need.
Connect, Prayer, and Giving
A Connect Team exists to help newcomers find their fit. Visitors who fill out a contact card or "I'm New" form are paired with a leader who follows up, and the church offers simple next steps like joining a LifeGroup, serving on a team, or signing up for baptism. A prayer team commits to praying over every request that comes in, anchored by James 5:13-16 and the belief that prayer changes things.
Giving is handled through the church's Realm platform, and services are livestreamed on YouTube for those who cannot attend in person. Weekly bulletins and a newsletter keep the congregation informed between Sundays.
The Pastoral Team
Jeff Oates serves as Senior Pastor. A native of Gardendale, Alabama, he came to faith in 2002, committed to vocational ministry at 17, and spent a decade in student ministry across Mississippi and Louisiana before returning to Alabama in 2016 to lead a revitalization effort at Palmerdale Cross Baptist Church in Pinson. He and his wife Katie have two sons, Caleb and Dallas, and his ministry focus is on building a multicultural, multigenerational church and investing in evangelism and discipleship.
David Anderson, the Student and Discipleship Pastor, grew up in Meridianville, played basketball at UAH, and worked in construction project management before sensing a call to vocational ministry. He began serving as Interim Student Pastor in September 2025 and now leads the student ministry and discipleship pathway full time.
Charles Dean joined the staff in 2018 as Associate Pastor of Music, Senior Adults, and Administration. Ordained in 2000 at First Baptist Church of Panama City and educated at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he has served churches in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama.
