Saratoga Federated Church: A Community at the Heart of Saratoga Village

Non-Denominational/Evangelical Church in Saratoga, California

Saratoga Federated Church is an interdenominational Christian congregation in the heart of Saratoga Village that meets for worship each Sunday at 10:00 am and runs an unusually wide network of care, disability inclusion, caregiver, and outreach ministries across the Silicon Valley and around the world.

About Saratoga Federated Church

Saratoga Federated Church sits in the middle of Saratoga Village, where Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road, Saratoga-Los Gatos Road, and Big Basin Way meet, just behind the village fire station at 20390 Park Place. The congregation has long served the surrounding community and the wider Silicon Valley with worship, teaching, and a network of care that stretches from Sunday morning nursery care to caregiver support and a global network of mission partners.

The motto on the front of the church's printed and online materials is "Filling the world with God's love, justice, and beauty." That sentence captures the orientation of the whole community, and most of what follows at Saratoga Federated grows out of it.

One Sunday Gathering at Ten

The whole congregation now gathers for worship at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary. Visitors arriving by car will find parking on site and around the village; the church asks that visitors not park in the nearby residential neighborhood. For those who cannot attend in person, the service is livestreamed on YouTube each Sunday morning at the same hour, and recordings of recent messages remain available afterward.

Children have their own way in. Signs in the parking lot point toward the Kids Ministry entrance, and parents with infants and toddlers three months through three years can drop them off in the nursery staffed by paid childcare workers. Children four years old through fifth grade can be signed in downstairs before the service begins for fun welcome activities, or walked down after the first two songs of family worship. After the service, a staff member meets families at the double doors to the children's rooms for pickup. Kids are likewise welcome to remain with their families in the Sanctuary throughout the service. Sixth through twelfth graders who would like to serve can apply to be a Leader in Training by emailing Christy Woosley.

Middle school and high school students meet at 10:00 am on the third floor during the Sunday gathering. Younger children and students are always welcome to stay with their families if a parent prefers to worship together.

Filling the World with God's Love, Justice, and Beauty

Saratoga Federated Church describes itself as "an independent, local, interdenominational Christian church," not affiliated with any particular denomination. Its mission statement reads: "We are followers of Jesus on a transformational journey, participating with the Spirit of God to fill the world with God's love, justice, and beauty."

Three core convictions anchor the church. First, the Old and New Testaments are the most reliable source for understanding God, and the Bible is the first and last place the church looks for guidance in thinking and behavior. Second, every human being is created in the image of God and therefore deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and honor - this is what it means to love one's neighbor. Third, the church affirms the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed, both recited in full on the church's belief page.

The congregation's three core behavioral values are: recognizing the image of God in everyone; giving and serving with generosity; and inviting and pursuing theological discovery. The stated vision for the coming years is to become a growing intergenerational, multiethnic community of Jesus followers who help others experience the transformational power and love of God.

That vision is broken into five areas of focused change: hiring a full-time Director of Student Ministry; relocating Children's Ministry into newly designed welcoming spaces; collectively serving 5,000 hours in the community by the end of 2025 (raised to 7,500 by the end of 2026); moving toward becoming a more multiethnic community; and uniting the congregation in one weekly worship gathering at 10:00 am.

Bridge Builders: An Open Door for Every Family

The Bridge Builders Disability and Inclusion Ministry is one of the most distinctive ministries of Saratoga Federated Church. Christy Woosley serves as the Disability and Inclusion Ministry Coordinator and Interim Director of Children's Ministries, and the program is built around the conviction that no one should be told the church is not a place for them.

The ministry includes The Cove, a sensory room for all ages; a Buddies program that provides one-to-one support for kids and students; Student Friends, an integrated program for sixth through twelfth graders that meets in rooms 109 and 110 during the 10:00 am service with snacks, music, video, and teaching; Young Adult Friends, a 10:00 am program for adults of all abilities that studies God's Word in adapted ways and worships together; a Bridge Builders Social Group that meets every Monday from 9:00 am to noon for adults with disabilities and their caregivers; and Respites, scheduled morning events that give parents of children with special needs several hours of drop-off care, with each participant paired with a one-to-one buddy and supported by a volunteer nurse. Volunteers with sewing, quilting, crocheting, baking, and other practical skills are invited to serve alongside the team, along with room hosts whose only requirement is the ability to stay in one place.

The church has also hosted Night to Shine, a prom-style evening for people with special needs, in partnership with the Tim Tebow Foundation. Jill Okamura, an elder, serves as a Buddy in the Bridge Builders ministry and has participated in Scouting with her husband David.

Children, Students, and the Next Generation

The Children's Ministry is in the process of relocating into the preschool room with new spaces designed for kids and parents. Allison Robinson serves as Childcare Coordinator. Children's programming emphasizes a relational, biblically centered approach, with seasonal events such as Christmas plays and the Kids Choir led by Lindsay Roush bringing energy and new families into Sunday mornings.

For middle and high school students, the church is currently searching for a full-time Director of Student Ministry. The role description calls for a leader with a deep personal walk with Christ, three or more years of experience with students, a bachelor's degree in a ministry, leadership, or theological field (preferred), and the ability to plan worship, teaching, small groups, summer camps, and winter weekend retreats such as those at Mount Hermon or Hume Lake. Past youth ministry at SFC has included MadHouse and LifeHouse gatherings for high school students and annual trips to Mexico to build homes alongside partner ministries.

Village Preschool, the church's on campus preschool program, has long been part of the life of SFC. Stephanie Griffith, wife of elder Morgan Griffith, teaches there, and many families have come into the wider church through the preschool.

A Network of Care for Every Season of Life

Care Ministry is one of the most fully developed parts of church life. Peggy Beck coordinates Grief Ministries and serves those in their seventies through the Century Club; Sarah Penzel is the Care Ministry Associate for those in their forties through sixties. Together they share the email address care@saratogafederated.org and the phone extension (408) 867-1000, press 2. Care Associates keep office hours on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Around them is a wider team of Care Deacons organized into three flocks. Team 1, led by Allison Robinson, serves young adults in their twenties and thirties. Team 2 serves mid-life adults in their forties through sixties and includes Michael Miller, Tia Marciel, Sandra Tang, Katherine Tseng, Greg VanWiggeren, and Ricky Yuen. Team 3 serves seniors in their seventies through nineties and includes Dave Aune, Anne Darling, Olivia D'Costa, Kathy Finnecy, Nancy Kamalski, Rolf Lips, Naz Tooyserkani, and Sybil Wolden. The flock deacons serve as shepherds for their populations, discern evolving needs in the congregation and community, and oversee the church's response.

The Care Ministry also operates a Medical Equipment Loan Program that lends wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, shower chairs, and Hoyer lifts to anyone in the community who needs them; a Deacons' Pantry where a team of chefs prepares meals for households recovering from illness or loss; and a Deacons' Workshop staffed by volunteers who help with small home repair projects for widows and older seniors. Safeway gift cards are distributed from the Care Center at 14376 Saratoga Avenue to those who qualify on the first Monday of each month from noon to 1:30 pm, while supplies last.

The Prayer Ministry filters prayer requests for confidentiality. Requests can be limited to the Care Team, or expanded to include Care Deacons, Elders, Staff, and the Prayer Chain. Prayer requests can be submitted online, by email to the Care Team, by phone, or by pew card on Sunday morning.

Grief, Aging, and the Long Work of Loving Well

The Grief Ministry hosts Grief Recovery Workshops each fall in Douglass Hall from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, with speakers and discussion groups focused on self-care and mutual care for those grieving and those who support them. In the winter and spring, the church offers a thirteen-week GriefShare seminar series. A "Surviving the Holidays" seminar is offered each November, featuring practical suggestions, video interviews with counselors and grief experts, and a take-home Survival Guide filled with tips, journaling ideas, and exercises.

Peggy Beck accompanies the pastor when meeting with grieving families, represents the church in hosting funeral or memorial services, and coordinates the involvement of other parishioners through family meals, greeters, ushers, and reception teams.

For those caring for aging parents and loved ones, the church has built an unusually thorough set of resources. A long-running Caregiver Discussion Group has hosted speakers on topics ranging from hospice and palliative care to legal documents for caregivers, dementia communication, balance and stability, sibling and aging parent relations, mental illness in a loved one, in-home versus residential living, hospice, downsizing, and geriatric care. The Thriving Caregiver Workshop Series, led by Master Certified Coach Iryna Ishchenko, has focused on practical skills like setting loving boundaries and stopping reactive patterns; Iryna hosts The Uncensored Caregiver podcast on the same subjects. Past conference handouts include speakers Diana Miller, architect of the World Health Organization's Age-Friendly Initiative in Silicon Valley; Bill Yanowsky, an athletic trainer and personal trainer; Vandana Puri, a senior nutrition program manager; Jeannie Mirassou, founder of S.A.I.L. Health Concierge; and Laurel Smith.

Support and Recovery groups hosted by the church include Alcoholics Anonymous on Thursdays at 8:00 pm in the Old Post Office Building at 14376 Saratoga Avenue; CSIX Connect for job seekers on Thursdays from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm ($5 cost); respite care for parents of children with special needs; Grief Recovery and GriefShare; and Divorce Recovery, offered when current needs warrant. The Care Ministry also curates a thorough guide to local agencies and services covering food, housing, utilities, employment, medical care, dental, vision, senior services, teen support, suicide prevention, mental health, debt and bankruptcy, legal aid, domestic violence, and addiction recovery.

Adults in Life Groups, Bible Study, and Fellowship

Adults at Saratoga Federated Church have many ways to gather beyond Sunday morning. Life Groups are the central small-group pathway, organized so members can grow closer to God and develop friendships; new participants can be matched through Pastor Sally Bryant. A Young Adult Gathering for ages 18 to 29 meets every Sunday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, sharing a meal together before moving into Bible study, discussion, and fellowship.

Bible Study Fellowship meets on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Community Bible Study, an interdenominational class with separate discussion groups for men, women, and couples, meets on Mondays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Women's Fellowship Circles meet the third Tuesday of the month from September through May, and Women's Fellowship Luncheons are held the first Tuesday of the month at 11:00 am from October through June. A Men's Bible study meets on Tuesday mornings.

The Adult Sunday School class on Zoom opens at about 9:15 am each Sunday, with the class running from 9:30 to 10:30 am, and is currently working through an in-depth study of First Corinthians with attention to the original Greek text and the history of Corinth. Notes are distributed the night before by Scott Fritz.

For those curious about membership, an Inquirer's Class is offered throughout the year; interested people can reach Pastor Sally Bryant at (408) 867-1000, extension 233.

Worship, Music, and the Arts

Kyle Logan serves as Minister of Worship and Creative Arts. The worship gathering has moved through a period of intentional unification, and the church is preparing for one weekly gathering at 10:00 am each Sunday. Music includes a choir that sings for services, a children's choir under Lindsay Roush's leadership, and intergenerational participation from instrumentalists and vocalists. Carol Sing and Trunk-or-Treat have grown into two of the church's main community events, drawing hundreds of neighbors onto the campus each year, and Aspire, an annual women's gathering, has drawn around 150 women for a day of teaching and connection.

Local Outreach in the Silicon Valley

The Local Outreach Team is led by volunteers under the pastoral support of Sally Bryant, with Bob Connors as team leader. The team's partnerships within a fifty-mile radius include CityTeam, Points of Light Oakland, Advent Ministries, Servant Partners in San Jose (with Annika John), Called Up with Clay and Kelly Elliot, Real Options, and Bridge Builders. Members of the Downtown Ministry team provide food and encouragement to shelter residents and homeless neighbors in downtown San Jose each Thursday and Saturday morning.

The church helped launch Emmaus Ministries of Silicon Valley in 1999. Its founder, the Reverend Dr. Russel M. Ikeda, previously served for twenty-one years as Associate Pastor at Saratoga Federated and now serves as chaplain for the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department. Emmaus Ministries offers spiritual direction and pastoral counsel through individual meetings, small groups, renewal retreats, pre-marital counseling, seminars, and workshops.

West Valley Community Services is another major local partner; Julie Atwood leads service opportunities there, and the SFC serve team gathers monthly for SASSC on the third Wednesday of each month, Abrahamic Alliance, and other ongoing opportunities.

Global Outreach and Mission Partners

The Global Outreach Team, supported pastorally by Sally Bryant, works with a long list of international partners. They include Child Hope International in South Asia; Chi Rho in Romania; Empower in Africa, which works to end the "Hyena Practice" and has trained 1,100 pastors and leaders and equipped 250 men and women to offer early childhood education in villages; Sonrise in Uganda; the Worldwide and Spain-based Clewett Family; Tim and Katie Cole in Japan; Steve and Janice Griswell in Mexico; Joe and Sheryl Goll working with international students in Arizona; Steve and Renée Grubb in England; Doug and Ann Johnson in the Middle East; Dave and Cindy Kahre worldwide; Jon and Cheri Matas worldwide; Jeff and Jessie Oleson with CRU; Eric and Penny Schering in Papua New Guinea; Estuardo and Sheny Salazar with ACSI in Guatemala; Nonilo and Fely Sanchez in the Philippines; and Kyle and Nell Stiff in Spain.

The Salazar family with ACSI serves over 1,000 Christian schools in nineteen countries across Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, supporting biblical worldview education; one of their graduates was the president of Guatemala, elected in 2016. Jeff and Jessie Oleson's CRU ministry has sent students on short-term mission trips, including one to Lebanon where the team shared the Gospel with ninety-nine people in conversations lasting about three hours. Points of Light Oakland has been reaching and saving at-risk youth in the inner city since 2007. Empower Malawi's first high school class graduated in 2023.

Support for outreach is raised separately from the general fund; donors can give online and select "outreach - general" from the dropdown menu. The Big Bless has been a four-week series of learning and giving focused on local and global outreach partners, with both monthly faith-promise commitments and a single offering at the close of the series.

The Big Bless, Giving, and the Foundation

Members and friends give in three primary ways: through the General Fund, which supports the ministries and operations of the church; through Big Bless/Outreach, which supports local and global outreach partners; and through the Foundation, which supports long-term capital needs.

Giving is processed online through PushPay, by texting saratogafc to 77977, through the Church Center app, or by mail. The Church Center app, available on iOS and Android, also serves as the member directory and event registration tool.

The SFC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that addresses long-term capital needs, including pastoral housing, property acquisition, and major equipment and property replacement. It facilitates legacy giving through wills and trusts and assists in raising capital funds outside the annual budget. Donations to the Foundation are fully tax deductible and separate from gifts to the general fund. Ryan Lipert serves as the Finance Director and can answer questions about the Foundation.

The Foundation helps SFC plan ahead in several specific ways: anticipating long-term capital needs such as pastoral housing and property acquisition; facilitating legacy giving; assisting in the raising of capital funds outside the annual budget; operating as a committee of elected church member volunteers; educating members regarding estate planning; and overseeing the management of Foundation funds and budgets.

The Church Center app, available on iOS and Android, serves as the hub for event registration, the church calendar, small-group sign-ups, the member directory, and online giving.
