Sacred Heart Catholic Church sits at 109 North Frazier Street in Conroe, the seat of Montgomery County, and describes itself as a Catholic community of disciples on a spiritual journey. Since 1898 the parish has grown from a sawmill-town mission celebrated in a private home into one of the larger parishes in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, now serving more than 7,500 families with roughly 70 active ministries, a parish school of about 260 students, and Mass in both English and Spanish every weekend.

From a Sawmill-Town Mission to a 7,500-Family Parish

The story of Sacred Heart begins in 1898, when Conroe was a sawmill town and Andrew Jackson Madeley invited the Reverend Joseph I. Kline of Plantersville to visit and offer Mass. The first known Mass in Conroe was celebrated in the home of Andrew J. and Harriett "Hattie" Francesca McDonald, on the corner of Second and Sherman Streets near the railroad tracks. Father Bernard Lee of Plantersville later made a twenty-nine-mile journey on horseback to administer the sacraments to the Madeleys' daughter Nellie.

Missionaries from Plantersville alternated visits between the homes of the McDade and Madeley families for the next fourteen years. In May 1910, Father George Wilhelm reported to Bishop Nicholas A. Gallagher of Galveston that a small frame mission church on the west side of South Main Street at Avenue G was nearing completion. On November 14, 1912, Wilhelm wrote that "The carpentry work is completed and the building is painted inside and outside," with about 25 souls in his care. Funds came from the Catholic Church Extension Society, and the McDade family donated a 199-by-150-foot plot about three blocks from the courthouse.

On October 25, 1916, Bishop Gallagher made his first trip to Conroe, confirming a class of seventeen and dedicating the mission to St. Mary's of the Woods. As the parish changed from mission to mission under successive pastors in Plantersville and New Waverly, the Catholic population swelled with the oil boom of the 1930s. The McDade family again donated land, and George Strake (who is credited with discovering the great Conroe oil field in 1931) and William Pfiffner made substantial gifts to the brick church at the present site. A persistent story holds that Strake donated most of the money shortly after being tapped on the shoulder at Mass by an oil field worker who whispered, "We've hit a gusher." On November 9, 1935, Bishop C. E. Byrne consecrated the marble altar donated by Mrs. Blanche Bender and dedicated the new church to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Bishop Byrne appointed Father Thomas M. Cemon the first permanent pastor on March 19, 1943. Father Cemon slept on a cot next to the sacristy in the parish's first kitchen-less rectory and took meals with parishioners, often at the John Heintz family grocery store. He built the first white-frame parish hall, erected by men of the parish with donated labor. Father Timothy T. Cronin succeeded him in January 1951, oversaw construction of the brick rectory in 1953, and persuaded Mrs. Blanche Bender to fund a six-classroom parish school that opened in September 1959 under four Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, with Sister William Mary as principal. In 1968 Father Fred P. O'Connor commissioned the all-purpose building that houses the present church offices, gym, and cafeteria. The current 1,500-seat church and 200-seat chapel were built in 2018, with a Dedication Mass on November 8, 2018.

Today Sacred Heart serves more than 7,500 families with about 70 active ministries, more than 1,000 students in religious education, and 260 students in the parish school. Three priests and two religious sisters reside on campus, supported by 19 parish staff members and 38 school staff members.

Mass Schedule in English, Spanish, and Bilingual

Mass is celebrated every day of the week in the main church and in the on-campus St. Mary of the Woods Chapel. The Sunday schedule offers five Masses: 7:30 AM in English, 10:00 AM in English (livestreamed), 12:30 PM in Spanish (livestreamed), 3:00 PM in Spanish, and 5:30 PM in English. Saturday Vigil Masses are celebrated at 5:00 PM in English and 7:00 PM in Spanish, and a Saturday morning English Mass is offered at 8:00 AM in the chapel, except on the first Saturday of the month. On First Saturdays a bilingual Mass is celebrated at 9:30 AM.

Daily Mass is offered Monday through Friday at 7:00 AM in English in the chapel, with an additional 12:10 PM English Mass Monday through Thursday. Tuesday and Thursday evenings bring a 7:00 PM Spanish Mass in the chapel. A bilingual First Friday Mass is celebrated at 7:00 PM. The 10:00 AM Sunday Mass, the 12:30 PM Sunday Mass, the 8:00 AM Saturday Mass, the 9:30 AM First Saturday Mass, all weekday Masses, and the First Friday Mass are all livestreamed.

Visitors and parishioners are encouraged to subscribe to Flocknote for parish news, and the parish bulletin is published online each week. Confession, Adoration, and Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of Penance is offered in the church six days a week, always by a bilingual priest or deacon. Confessions are heard Monday from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM, and Saturday from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. On First Fridays, confessions are heard from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, and on First Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM.

Eucharistic Adoration is held in the St. Mary of the Woods Chapel from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Monday through Thursday. The Blessed Sacrament is temporarily reposed during all Masses, and there is no Adoration when the parish office is closed. The parish describes the chapel as the place where "Jesus can be adored in the Most Holy Eucharist four days a week."

Anyone who is seriously ill, homebound, in the hospital, or preparing for serious surgery may call the parish office at (936) 756-8186 to schedule a time to be anointed. A Hospital Visit Ministry and a Nursing Home Ministry bring Communion, prayers, and personal visits to parishioners who cannot attend Mass.

Sacred Heart Catholic School

Sacred Heart Catholic School is the parish's day school, founded in 1959 as a six-classroom building under the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. The current 33,000-square-foot brick school building was dedicated in 1997 with Mrs. Margaret Looper as the first principal. About 260 students are enrolled, taught by 38 staff members. The school is led by a principal and governed by a School Board that oversees policy, finances, and long-term planning, with strategic budget support from an SHC School Finance Committee.

The school grounds also host a Mother's Day Out Program, which uses the old church building on the corner of Frazier and McDade Streets, and a licensed daycare center for children six weeks to age three that opened during Phase II of the parish's Master Plan. A security fence, an auditorium renovation with a commercial kitchen, additional parking, and a new maintenance office were completed as part of Phase I.

Faith Formation and Sacramental Preparation

The parish's faith formation program is built on the principle that "parents are the primary educators of their children" (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2223-2226). First-year families follow the Faith at Home curriculum, gathering once a month for a parent talk and a children's classroom session while taking home resources for weekly Sunday Mass attendance, family sharing of the Gospel, retreat participation, and praying the Rosary. Sessions run from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

In Year Two, families enter Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion. The program is open to baptized youth in second grade or older whose families are registered members of the parish and who have completed at least one year of prior religious education in a CCE or day-school program. Parents must provide an original baptism certificate (or have the child make a Profession of Faith), the child and parents must attend all preparation sessions and Sunday Mass regularly, and an interview with the pastor, the Sacramental Preparation Coordinator, and the parents determines the child's readiness for the sacraments.

Confirmation preparation is offered for both high-school students and adults. Adult candidates must be at least 18 years old, baptized Catholic, have received First Eucharist, and be actively practicing their faith; ten-week sessions are held in the spring and fall. Marriage preparation begins with a parish orientation, and the parish maintains a Marriage Sponsor Couple program for engaged couples. Adults seeking to become Catholic enter OCIA, the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (formerly RCIA), with Sunday sessions from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. OCIA follows an open-enrollment model, so inquirers can begin at any time of year.

Youth Ministry

Sacred Heart's youth ministry is split by age group. Junior High Youth Ministry serves students in grades 6 through 8 under Magda Gallegos (936-521-3998, mgallegos@shconroe.org), and the High School Youth Ministry serves grades 9 through 12 under Carolina Cantu (936-521-3708, ccantu@shconroe.org). The youth ministry organizes rallies, conferences, retreats, and other faith-formation events throughout the year.

The Spanish-language Amigo Cristo young adult group meets on Fridays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the 34 Youth Center, building friendships and an active Christian community among young adults in the parish.

Adult Faith Formation: Bible Study, Catholic Faith Study, and OCIA

The Adult Continuing Education (ACE) ministry offers Bible studies, faith formation courses, and spiritual workshops for adults, coordinated by Todd Wisler. Recommended resources include the USCCB, catholic.com, newadvent.org, and the free Catholic platform FORMED, which parishioners can access by registering at signup.formed.org and selecting Sacred Heart Conroe.

The Catholic Faith Study, taught by Henry Avila (MTS), meets in the auditorium from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the first, third, fourth, and fifth Thursdays of the month, September through May (no classes June through August). The open-format sessions welcome drop-ins and are free of charge. Sacred Heart also hosts FTCM (Formation Towards Christian Ministry), the diocesan catechist certification program of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, which is open to all adults seeking deeper faith formation or pursuing full catechist certification.

A biannual Bible Study program runs in the spring and fall, usually eight to ten weeks long, meeting in the Parish Life Center on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM or Thursday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A $30 workbook is required, and participants must hold CMG (Catholic Mutual Group) Safe Environment Certification.

Music Ministry

The Music Ministry invites anyone interested in sharing their musical gifts to help lead worship. Reading music is a plus but not required for vocalists (instrumentalists must read lead sheets). The choirs include:

• The St. Hildegard Sunday Choir, which sings Gregorian Chant, Sacred Polyphony, and traditional hymnody at the 10:00 AM Mass (9:00 AM call), with Wednesday rehearsals from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Open to high-school-aged youth through adults.
• The St. Cecilia Vigil Choir, which leads hymns and chants at the Saturday 5:00 PM Mass (warm-up Saturday at 3:30 PM).
• The Contemporary Ensemble, which blends post-Vatican II hymnody with modern praise music at the Sunday 5:30 PM Mass (4:00 PM call).
• Cantors, who lead music at the Sunday 7:30 AM Mass (7:00 AM call) and other liturgies; auditions required.
• The Ascend Worship team, a select group of musicians who lead praise and worship at quarterly Adoration nights.
• The Laudate Pueri Children's Choir for students in grades 5 through 10, rehearsing every second and fourth Saturday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM and singing at the Christmas Eve 4:00 PM Mass.
• Three Spanish-language ensembles, Luz y Alegria, Amigo Cristo, and Estudiantina Asunción, each with its own Mass assignment and weekly rehearsal.

All are directed by Ben Sanchez, Director of Music, with Brenda Mendoza as Spanish Music Coordinator.

Hispanic Ministries

Spanish-language ministry is woven into nearly every facet of parish life. The Spanish Mass schedule includes the Saturday 7:00 PM vigil, Sunday 12:30 PM, and Sunday 3:00 PM, plus Tuesday and Thursday evening Masses in the chapel. Spanish-speaking families use the same sacramental preparation pathways, and the parish maintains dedicated coordinators for marriage preparation, OCIA, ACTS retreats, Faith at Home, and adult faith formation in Spanish.

Distinctively Hispanic devotions and ministries include the Guadalupanas (devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe), Cursillistas, the Movimiento Familiar Cristiano, the Reparación de las 24 Horas de la Pasión de Jesucristo, the Grupo de Danza Folklórica, the Carismatic Prayer Group (Grupo de Oración Espíritu Santo), the Legion of Mary, TMIY (Ese Hombre Eres Tú), the Visit to the Sick Ministry, the Lawn Ministry, the Parking Ministry, the Quinceañera Ministry, and the Seven Sisters Apostolate. Spanish liturgical roles include Monaguillos (altar servers), Ministros Extraordinarios de la Sagrada Comunión, Hospitalidad (hospitality ministers), Proclamadores (lectors), and Sacristanes, alongside the Luz y Alegria, Amigo Cristo, and Estudiantina Asunción choirs.

St. Vincent de Paul: Food, Clothing, and Financial Assistance

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul chapter at Sacred Heart was founded in 1986 in cooperation with Tree of Life Lutheran Church under the motto "Ecumenism in Action." It now operates with more than 200 volunteers out of a building at 145 Madeley Street, Conroe, dedicated in 1990 and named the Oscar Romero Building in honor of Archbishop Óscar Romero.

Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with phones answered only during those times. The Food Pantry phone is (936) 539-1188, and everyone requesting financial assistance must call that number first. A drive-thru food distribution is held each Wednesday from 9:00 AM to noon (or until supplies run out). The Clothes Closet accepts clothing donations by appointment and serves clients Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The Society also provides financial assistance for rent, utilities, and prescription medications, operates a soup kitchen at the Salvation Army on Wednesdays, and supports the needy through home visits.

The parish also serves the hungry at the Conroe House of Prayer (CHOP) every Thursday morning, providing a warm main dish, snacks, fruit, cereal, and drinks alongside Christians from various local churches. Volunteers arrive at 8:00 AM and finish by 9:00 AM, with each team serving once every six to seven weeks.

Respect Life, Bereavement, and Mental Health Resources

The Respect Life Ministry promotes the dignity of human life from conception to natural death and coordinates Sacred Heart's participation in the Spring and Fall 40 Days for Life prayer vigils outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Spring, Texas. The Gabriel Project offers practical help, baby items, and spiritual support to women in difficult pregnancy circumstances, while Project Rachel provides confidential post-abortion healing through the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston's network of priests, religious, counselors, and lay ministers. Human trafficking awareness materials direct parishioners to the national hotline (888-373-7888).

Bereavement Support Groups meet in English and Spanish, with a special group for those who have lost a child, coordinated by Linda Galanos. For ongoing counseling needs, referrals include Rejoice Counseling (myparishcounseling.com/shconroe) and Gratia Plena Catholic Counseling, along with several local Catholic and Christian therapists and the University of St. Thomas tele-mental health clinic.

Other pastoral outreach includes a Hospital Visit Ministry, a Nursing Home Ministry, a Funeral Reception Ministry, an Orphan Ministry partnering with local agencies that serve foster children and orphaned youth, and a State Penitentiary Ministry that provides Mass, Bible studies, confessions, and counseling to inmates in the northern area penitentiaries.

Liturgical Ministries and Funeral Planning

Every baptized Catholic is called to share in the liturgy, and Sacred Heart welcomes volunteers to serve as Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers, Hospitality Ministers (Ushers), Greeters, and Music Ministers. Additional roles include Art and Environment (responsible for seasonal and liturgical decoration), the Altar Society (care of altar linens and vestments), A/V (sound, video, and livestream), and Sacristans. The parish provides detailed Guidelines for Dress, distinguishing between Sunday Mass (professional and modest attire) and weekday Mass (business casual), with the standard that ministers should "lead by example" in reverence and respect.

Funerals are scheduled as a Mass of Resurrection during the weekdays rather than weekends, in keeping with the parish's other liturgies. The Funeral Planning page walks families through the choice of Vigil Service (Rosary or Liturgy of the Word), the selection of Old Testament, Responsorial Psalm, New Testament, and Gospel readings, the placement of the pall, the gifts of bread and wine, and optional Words of Remembrance. Cremation is permitted; the Church encourages families to wait until after the Mass to cremate and to inter the cremains in a grave or columbarium.

Marriage, Family, and Fellowship

Sacred Heart prepares couples for marriage through Marriage Sponsor Couples and parish orientations (offered in English at 6:00 PM and in Spanish at 7:00 PM), and through the Together in Holiness formation series presented in partnership with the St. John Paul II Foundation, a year-round marriage enrichment experience for spouses and parents. For families with members who have special needs, the Loving Hearts Ministry provides inclusive faith formation for individuals of all ages preparing for the sacraments at their own pace. Other fellowship and service groups include the Knights of Columbus Conroe Council 6456 (led by Grand Knight Barry Abbott), the Catholic Daughters of America, the Ladies Workshop, the Boy Scouts, the Cub Scouts, the Filipino Ministry (which coordinates the annual Simbang Gabi celebration), the Holy Family Homeschoolers, the Legion of Mary, the Charismatic Prayer Group, That Man is You (TMIY), and the 99 Evangelization Ministry, which sponsors an annual Eucharistic Procession through downtown Conroe, an annual Live Nativity, and year-round outreach to inactive Catholics and non-Catholics in the area.

Pastoral Staff and Joining the Parish

The parish is led by Father Nicolas Ramirez as pastor, with Father Jimmy and Father Joppan serving as Parochial Vicars. Three deacons assist: Dcn Jeff, Dcn Alejandro, and Dcn Richard. Daniella G. directs Religious Education, OCIA, and Adult Faith Formation. Ben S. directs Music; Jon M. coordinates Liturgy; and Brenda M. coordinates Spanish Music. The OCIA Coordinator is Alfonso N., the Marriage and Annulment Coordinator is Antonieta "Toni" C., the Baptism Coordinator is Brenda C., and the Communications Coordinator is Gabriel D. Magda Gallegos leads Junior High Youth Ministry and Carolina Cantu leads High School Youth Ministry. Dean B. serves as Director of Facilities.

Parish registration takes about five business days to approve. Visitors who wish to become Catholic may begin the OCIA process at any time of year, since the program follows an open-enrollment model.
