A Grace-Driven Church on Cahaba Valley Trace
Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church (OMPC) sits at 5080 Cahaba Valley Trace in southern Shelby County, just south of Birmingham. The church's single-sentence mission - "Engaging every neighbor with the surprising power of grace" - sums up a sprawling ministry that includes two Sunday services, a full children's program, a separate youth house, men's and women's ministry, an early learning center, a school of fine arts, and global missions spanning roughly 30 countries. Lead Pastor Caleb Click preaches to a congregation that fills the Sanctuary at 8:15 and 10:45 am on Sundays, while Executive Pastor Greg Perry and Founding Pastor at Large Bob Flayhart serve alongside him on the senior team.
Sunday Mornings: Two Services and a Discipleship Hour
A typical Sunday at OMPC follows a three-part rhythm. The 8:15 am service is described as the "intimate service in the Sanctuary," a quieter gathering of the church body. The 10:45 am service offers a more vibrant environment and includes Kids Worship, when kindergartners through second graders are dismissed from the Sanctuary during the sermon to learn the same passage in an age-appropriate setting in the Gym. Children's bulletins are available at the Sanctuary center entrance for K5-2nd graders; Oak Kids Sermon Notebooks can be picked up for 3rd-6th graders.
Between those services sits the 9:30 am Discipleship Hour. Children's Sunday School classes meet by grade and gender in the A-Wing, B-Wing, and Gym; JrHi and SrHi students gather at the separate Youth House; and adults join one of the Sunday School classes described below. What We Believe
OMPC is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). Its doctrinal commitments are set out in plain terms: the Bible is the inspired, infallible, authoritative word of God; God exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; all people are sinners saved only by grace through faith in Christ; God is sovereign over all that comes to pass yet humans remain fully responsible before him; the church practices two sacraments, the Lord's Supper and Covenant Baptism (which includes both believers and the children of believers); and Jesus will return bodily to judge and to receive his people.
The church describes itself as Grace Driven, Relationally Authentic, and Kingdom Oriented. Its measurable goals include surprising grace, surprising worship, surprising community, surprising growth, surprising generosity, and surprising impact - a vocabulary that shows up throughout the church's communications. OMPC publishes its own position paper on the role of women in ministry and points to PCA resources on human sexuality for those who want to dig further.
Oak Kids: Nursery through Preteen
OMPC's children's ministry, known as Oak Kids, runs from six-week-old infants through sixth graders under Children's Ministry Director Barbara Lindsey. The team's stated strategy moves in three steps: Nursery and Preschool children learn that Truth is found in God's Word; Elementary children learn how to read God's Word for truth; Preteens learn how to apply that truth to their lives.
On Sunday mornings, Nursery care is offered for 6-week-olds through 2-year-olds in C-Wing, while 3- and 4-year-olds meet on the first floor of A-Wing. Children through sixth grade can be dropped off starting fifteen minutes before each service and during the 9:30 hour. Mustard Seeds, the special needs ministry coordinated by Kimberly Taylor and Haylee Stuart, provides one-on-one buddies for children affected by a special need during all three morning slots.
Sunday evenings add more. Kids Choir, directed by Mandy Sears, rehearses before the R.O.C.K. (the "rotation of Christ's kids"), a 5:30-7:00 pm curriculum for 1st-4th graders with a pizza dinner included. Fifth and sixth graders meet separately at Modular Building 1 for Crossroads, a parallel Sunday evening program. The Oak Kids Communicants Class is offered each fall and spring to 4th-6th graders whose parents are members and concludes with an interview before elders and women shepherds.
On weekdays, the Clubhouse Nursery Ministry provides care from 6 weeks through rising Kindergarten from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (early drop-off at 8:00 am for an extra fee), with daily rates scaled by number of children. Treehouse Early Learning Center, the church's Gospel-centered preschool for 1- to 5-year-olds, runs two-, three-, four-, and five-day options from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Monday through Friday in the Fall and Spring semesters, with registration for the next school year opening February 1.
Youth House: JrHi and SrHi
Middle and high schoolers gather at OMPC's separate Youth House, led by Frazier Taylor (Interim Youth Coordinator and SrHi Guys Coordinator), Marissa Williams (Youth Coordinator), Kasey Paine (SrHi Girls Coordinator), and Caroline Rives (JrHi Girls Coordinator). On Sunday mornings, both groups meet for discipleship from 9:30-10:30 am, often around a shared bowl of cereal.
Sunday evenings split the age groups: JrHi (grades 7-8) meets from 5:30 to 7:00 pm with food, games, worship, and Bible teaching; SrHi (grades 9-12) meets from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. SrHi D-Groups are formed by gender each fall and meet in homes throughout the year. A weekly JrHi Bible Study is held on Wednesdays at the Youth House.
Adult Ministries: Sunday School, Men, Women, Forerunners
Adult Ministry at OMPC is led by Pastor of Adult Ministries Chad Walker and divided into five lanes: College and Young Professionals, Men's Ministry, Women's Ministry, Forerunners (the seniors ministry), and Sunday School classes. The Sunday School hour at 9:30 am offers roughly a dozen classes throughout the year, including age-and-stage classes like Parenting Collective, Next Chapter, and the College and Young Professionals group; intergenerational classes like Verse by Verse, The Word in Community, and Kingdom Discipleship; plus a Newcomers class taught by Dax Gibson, the Pastor of Life Groups, Outreach, and Newcomers.
Men's Ministry, coordinated by Mark Long and Dax Gibson, builds around weekly small groups that meet on Wednesday nights, Thursday mornings, and Friday mornings. A Wednesday evening OAKS Group in W-201 focuses on gospel, community, and mission; a Thursday morning Barnabas Group at 8:30 am is led by John Welch and Mark Long; Friday mornings at 6:00 am gather under Greg Bradford. Prayer gatherings are held Wednesdays at 6:00 am and Saturdays at 7:00 am. The men also run a monthly Men & BBQ outing, interest groups for mentoring, hiking, and auto repair, and host the Awaken Recovery meetings and a Sunday afternoon Men's Anger Group.
Women's Ministry, supported by Women's Ministry Assistant Lauren Cannon, gathers the women of OMPC for Fall and Spring Bible studies (recent offerings have included Proverbs: The Way of Wisdom on Wednesdays at 9:30 am, and Joshua: Every Good Promise Fulfilled on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm and Thursdays at 9:30 am), a Monthly eNewsletter, and an annual beach retreat to Blue Mountain Beach, Florida. Women's Social events in the Community Life Center Commons bring the women together for board games and conversation.
Forerunners is the seniors ministry of OMPC, coordinated by Amy Steenwyk and tied to a short-term missions trip each year (a 2026 Forerunners trip to Manchester, UK is scheduled). The College and Young Professionals ministry is pastored by Walker Byrd, with Stephanie Bradley serving as Young Professionals Coordinator; recent YoPros short-term trips have included Birmingham, UK.
Shepherding, Mercy, and Pastoral Care
At the heart of OMPC's pastoral structure is the shepherding model: every member is assigned a shepherding elder who periodically checks in on the family. Pastor of Shepherding and Pastoral Care P.D. Mayfield oversees the system, supported by Pastor of Visitation and Care Tim McCracken, Mercy Care Coordinator Shannon Sullivan, Counselor in Residence Emily Walker (a licensed counselor), and Porch Light Coordinator Becky Gibbens, who leads the church's foster, adoption, and kinship care ministry.
The Mercy Team handles benevolence requests from inside the church and the broader Birmingham area, providing food, financial help, medical bill assistance, mortgage and utility support, and connections to counseling. Skilled volunteers also offer construction, plumbing, electrical, legal, and general maintenance help. The Diaconate adds Disaster Response work and seasonal projects like Angel Tree and Thanksgiving Boxes.
Compassion Groups meet in the Fall and Spring semesters. Current offerings include a Sunday afternoon Men's Anger Support Group led by P.D. Mayfield; weekly Awaken Recovery meetings, a gospel-based 12-step community for men and women impacted by sexual addiction and betrayal; Grandparents Raising Grandkids, led by Paul and Robbie Berry; and GriefShare, facilitated by Emily Walker with a 12-person cap that begins once at least six people have signed up.
OMPC also maintains a Suicide Prevention Initiative with 24/7 emergency referrals, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Crisis Center Hotline in Birmingham. The church publishes a directory of Christian counseling, financial counseling, anti-trafficking, and crisis resources for anyone who needs them.
Worship Ministry and Production
Worship Minister Jason Sears leads OMPC's worship life alongside Technical Director Wes Smith, Kids Choir Director Mandy Sears, and Worship Assistant Amy McGucken. The Worship Choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm in the Choir Room during the Fall and Spring semesters and prepares for the Christmas and Palm Sunday services. Kids Choir for 1st-6th graders and Youth Choir for 7th-8th graders rehearse on Sundays (Kids) and Wednesdays (Youth) ahead of the same church-wide services.
The Sunday Morning Production Team runs lights, sound, and slides. New volunteers are welcome, with no prior technology background required; the team typically serves one Sunday a month and rehearses on the Wednesday evening before. Jason Sears maintains a blog with Sunday setlists, the OMPC Worship Spotify playlist, and recordings of past Christmas and Easter services.
Missions: Over the Fence, Over the Mountain, and Overseas
OMPC organizes its missions work around the motto of "Over the Pew (within OMPC), Over the Fence (in the local community), Over the Mountain (in Birmingham), and Overseas." US Ministry Partners fall into three categories: Campus Ministries (RUF at Auburn, Alabama, Alabama A&M, Samford, and UAB; Campus Outreach at Auburn-International and Mississippi State; YoungLife in urban Birmingham; and others), Church Planting (Sacred Road, Urban Hope Community Church, One Voice, Alabama Church Planting Network, and PCA plants in Irvine, Tampa, and Miami), and Discipleship (Christian Service Mission, Foundations Early Learning Center, Sav-A-Life Vestavia & Shelby, King's Home, Restoration Academy, Aspire Movement, and others).
Locally, OMPC supports Rosedale Food Pantry, Royal Divinity Ministries, South Park Baptist Church, Christian Service Mission, and Urban Hope Community Church in Fairfield, along with Harvest House - a fully furnished home on the OMPC campus that provides temporary housing for refugee families served by the local agency Inspiritus. Over the Fence service also includes Porch Light (foster care, adoption, and kinship care), Diaconal Teams (Mercy, Disaster Response, Angel Tree, Thanksgiving Boxes), and Oak Mountain Mission Ministries, a Pelham-based partner now in its second decade of service to Shelby and Jefferson counties.
Overseas, OMPC supports more than 50 global ministry partners in nearly 30 countries, with a particular focus on holistic Reformed church planting. Annual short-term trips have included Forerunners to Manchester, YoPros to Birmingham (UK), a One Voice team in Washington, D.C., teams to Calgary and London, a Bulgaria Medical Trip, and a CPI Japan team. Annual support for global partners is funded through Faith Promise giving above and beyond regular tithes: 75% of the budget funds ongoing partner support and 25% funds partner care and mobilization.
Each year during the last week of February and first weekend of March, OMPC hosts a Global Missions Conference, and each fall a US Missions Sunday gathers partners in the Birmingham area for testimony and a church-wide lunch.
Generosity and Giving
OMPC accepts gifts through several channels: online giving through Church Center, the OMPC app, mail to the church office, in-person giving plates at any Sanctuary entrance, and a lockbox downstairs near the Executive Suite. Stock gifts are handled through a Raymond James brokerage account; donor-advised funds and memorial gifts can be designated to specific funds.
The General Fund supports ministry, staff, US Ministry Partners, and facilities. Faith Promise funds the more than 50 global partners. The Building Fund supports capital improvements, the Mercy Fund supports benevolence, and an Event Scholarship Fund helps with Children's, Youth, and Adult ministry event fees. Recent fiscal-year reporting shows Faith Promise giving of more than $971,000 for the year and Mercy Fund giving of more than $280,000, with both totals growing significantly over the previous year.
Becoming a Member: Discover OMPC
Visitors and newcomers can find their way into OMPC through a clear four-step path. First, attend a Sunday morning Newcomers Sunday School Class at 9:30 am. Second, attend Discover OMPC, a three-week class offered seasonally during the Sunday School hour (typically meeting in Room C-242 with childcare provided through Oak Kids). Third, complete the membership application - which includes a personal profession of faith - and interview with an elder and a shepherding team member. Fourth, take vows before the church body on the first Sunday of the following month.
A monthly Newcomer Community Group meets on Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in Room C-242 for newcomers to get to know pastors and leaders and to learn about next steps. Childcare during those evenings is provided through The R.O.C.K. for Nursery-6th grade and JrHi at the Youth House for 7th-8th graders. The Guest and New Member Coordinator, Stephanie Maxey, walks newcomers through the process.
Schools and the Arts on Campus
OMPC's campus hosts three schools. Treehouse Early Learning Center is the church's own Gospel-centered preschool for children ages 1-5. Westminster School at Oak Mountain is a separate classical Christian school (with its own faculty, board, and supporters) serving students from K-12 on the OMPC campus. The School of Fine Arts offers 30-, 45-, and 60-minute weekly private lessons in piano, guitar, bass, and percussion during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, taught by faculty members John Will Martin, Chadwick McDowell, and Justin Wallace.
In 2026 OMPC celebrated the grand opening of the new West Campus Community Life Center, a partnership project with Westminster that adds a full-sized gymnasium, locker rooms, classrooms, arts space, a community gathering area, and a new track and field/soccer stadium. The new Commons hosts many of the women's social events and other fellowship gatherings.
