Norwin Christian Church sits along Barnes Lake Road in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, a self-governing congregation that traces its roots to the Restoration Movement, a tradition that began here in Pennsylvania and seeks to restore New Testament Christianity through the authority of Scripture and unity through the Holy Spirit. The church has built its identity around a single mission: "Reach Out and Teach All to Follow Jesus." Three weekly worship services, a deep investment in children and youth, and an unusually broad global missions network shape the life of NCC.
Thursday Nights at NCC: A Midweek Reset
The most distinctive rhythm at Norwin Christian Church is its Thursday evening service at 7 p.m., a roughly one-hour gathering designed to help people pause the busyness of the week. The format is intentionally intimate: acoustic worship led by a smaller team that draws from the same song catalog as Sunday mornings, communion, and a full-length Bible-based sermon. Children from birth through sixth grade have their own classes running at the same time, so the whole family can attend together. The Thursday service runs in addition to the two Sunday services and is treated as a weekly chance to recharge and refocus rather than a casual alternative.
Sunday Mornings: Two Identical Services
Sundays at NCC follow a steady, repeated pattern. Two identical services meet at 8:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., each including a time of worship, communion, and a Bible-based message. The 8:45 a.m. service is also the one that is livestreamed for those who prefer to join from home. Communion is built into the rhythm of every gathering: visitors can pick up bread and juice at one of the communion tables on the way into the auditorium or wait until the communion moment in the service itself. NCC Kids classes run during both morning services, and a family room off the main auditorium is available for parents who would rather keep younger children with them while still following the service.
The Next Generation: NCC Kids, MSM, and HSM
Children's ministry at Norwin Christian Church is split into two coordinated programs. NCC Kids serves preschoolers through sixth grade with age-appropriate classes that meet during both Sunday services and the Thursday night service. Each week includes a Bible lesson built around Scripture readings, videos, and hands-on activities that reinforce a single Big Idea. Children in preschool through fourth grade are checked in through an electronic system that prints matching parent and child tags, a security measure designed so that only an authorized adult can pick up a child. The Nursery, for infants through age three, sits within this same NCC Kids umbrella.
Middle and high school students have their own parallel ministries. MSM (Middle School Ministry) gathers seventh and eighth graders on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., while HSM (High School Ministry) meets for ninth through twelfth graders on Sundays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Both groups also have Sunday morning classes during the 8:45 and 10:30 services. Together with NCC Kids, these programs form the backbone of how the church invests in the next generation.
Adults, Small Groups, and Getting Connected
Beyond the weekly services, Norwin Christian Church runs an active small group ministry. Groups meet throughout the wider area and cover a wide variety of topics, with options for families, singles, men, women, couples, retirees, and more. New groups are launched seasonally, and a JotForm signup page on the church's site is the doorway for getting matched into one. The church also offers an unusually broad catalog of hands-on service opportunities for adults who want to plug in, ranging from Building and Grounds, Mowing, Communion Prep, and Coffee Prep to MOPS, the Mobile Food Pantry, the Blessings Boutique, the Parking Ministry, the Safety Team, Hospitality, Softball Ministry, the Stewardship team, Vintage Voyagers, the Women's Ministry, the Men's Ministry (The Forge), the Usher Team, the Worship team, the Welcome Desk, NCC Kids, Youth Ministry, NCC Technology, Karate Ministry, the Kitchen Ministry, the Connecting Ministry, the Missions Ministry, and Empty Nesters (2nd Act). For anyone looking to deepen their faith at home, the church provides free access to RightNow Media, a streaming library of more than twenty thousand video Bible studies taught by leaders such as Francis Chan, Jennie Allen, J.D. Greear, and Dr. Tony Evans, available through a free app on major streaming devices.
What They Believe
NCC describes itself as an independent, non-denominational church that wants to be identified by the name of Christ alone, with no regional headquarters or hierarchical structure. The congregation is associated with other churches that identify with the Restoration Movement, and the church's beliefs page lays out a classical evangelical and Restorationist theology. God is described as the Creator and Ruler of the universe, existing eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus is confessed as the Son of God and promised Messiah, fully God and fully human, who lived a sinless life, died on the cross for the reconciliation of humanity, rose again on the third day, ascended to the right hand of God, and will return again. The Holy Spirit is described as a personal, divine presence who empowers Christian living, comforts believers, and guides them into spiritual truth. Scripture is held to be God's written Word, recorded under the supernatural inspiration of the Holy Spirit and without mixture of error.
Salvation is found through Jesus Christ alone, received by grace through faith. Faith, in NCC's teaching, involves believing that Jesus is the Christ, repenting of sin, making a public confession of Jesus as Lord, and being immersed in water for the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Baptism, in the church's understanding, is an expression of personal faith reserved for those old enough to make their own decision to follow Jesus, rather than an act performed on behalf of infants. Communion is observed weekly as part of every worship gathering. The church also teaches that every Christian is responsible for serving others, stewarding God's blessings, sharing the message of Christ, and conforming to the character of Christ, and that eternity in heaven or hell is a literal and eternal reality determined by one's response to God in this life. Preaching Minister Jeff Terpstra has recorded a brief video on baptism that is linked from the beliefs page for those who want a more in-depth explanation.
A Global and Local Mission Network
The NCC Missions team cultivates and supports a wide slate of mission partners, both local and international. The current roster reflects a clear interest in unreached people groups, indigenous church planting, recovery from addiction and exploitation, and ministry to children. Internationally, the church supports the Gentile family in Italy through Team Expansion; the Ganyo family in Ghana, Togo, and Burkina Faso through Training Tomorrow's Leaders, an organization that supports indigenous church planters, small-business grants, well-drilling, and Vacation Bible Schools; the Hixson family, who are creating and translating ministry materials in Chinese through Outreach International; the Snyders in El Salvador through Mission to El Salvador, which serves survivors of trafficking, the homeless, and children recovering from addiction; the LaRue family, who plan to move to Poland through LifeVenture Group; Doug Lucas, founder and president of Team Expansion; Jake Hjemvick, chief operating officer of Christ for the City International; Martin Sanders in Colombia through Gap Creek Columbia Mission, where he teaches Bible and Christian ethics and co-directs a church praise band; and an undisclosed family serving in Asia through Team Expansion, whose location is withheld for safety. Kathy Girton Pfaff provides counseling for missionaries, missionary candidates, and re-entry missionaries at reduced rates through Wellness in Christian Ministries.
Stateside and regionally, NCC supports the American Indian Christian Mission in Show Low, Arizona, which runs a Christian boarding school for Navajo and Apache children and ministers to entire family units; Good News Productions International in Joplin, Missouri, which produces Gospel media through nine regional centers; International Disaster Emergency Services (IDES), headquartered in Noblesville, Indiana, with focus areas in evangelism, disaster response, hunger relief, community development, and medical care; Rapha International, which provides aftercare for survivors of human trafficking and exploitation through Survivor Care Campuses and family preservation programs; His Place in Pittsburgh, which runs after-school and summer programming for children, a family support center pantry, and family case management; Pittsburgh Dream Center (formerly Sonship) in McKeesport, which runs the Adopt-A-Block outreach, food distribution, and a one-year women's discipleship program; and Camp Christian in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, which hosts summer camps for children from kindergarten through high school, retreats for men and women, and special luncheons and banquets. Two open positions posted on the site, an Associate Minister of Small Groups and Outreach and a Youth Minister, indicate that the church is currently expanding its ministry team.
Planning a First Visit
First-time guests at Norwin Christian Church can expect a low-pressure welcome. Parking is available in the front, side, and back lots, with a parking team on hand to direct traffic. As visitors enter the building, a front desk is staffed to greet first-time guests, help families check children into NCC Kids, and point them to the right classroom. Restrooms are available in two locations, on the left through the hallway off the main lobby and on the right past the Cafe. Communion tables near the auditorium entrance let visitors pick up bread and juice on the way in if they wish to participate. Services run on Sunday mornings at 8:45 and 10:30, the Thursday acoustic service runs at 7 p.m., and the 8:45 Sunday service is livestreamed for those joining remotely. NCC Kids classes for preschoolers through sixth grade meet during all three services, with the Nursery available for infants through age three, and a family room off the main auditorium available for parents who want to keep young children with them. Visitors with questions before they arrive can reach the church office at 724-863-2141 or office@norwinchristianchurch.com.
