A fellowship on King Mill Pike

Just a couple of miles off Interstate 81 on the east side of Bristol, Virginia, NorthStar Baptist Church rises as a fellowship built on the love of Christ and the hope found in Him. The building on King Mill Pike houses the church office, classrooms, a kitchen, and a fellowship hall that doubles as the worship space for now. A permanent sanctuary is planned as Phase 2 of the building project; until then, every Sunday morning service takes place on the bottom floor of the current structure. The congregation calls itself a 21st century church guided by the principles of the 1st century church, and members describe a simple aim: to point people in the right direction - the direction the North Star has long pointed navigators - toward Jesus Christ.

From a founding family to a growing team

NorthStar traces its beginnings to the work of founding pastor Dr. William Houck, his wife Susie, and their daughter Sarah, whose prayer, sacrifice, and steady labor gave the church its start. Today the pastoral team is led by Ian Fowler, who serves as Lead Pastor. Gary Breeding works alongside him as Associate and Student Pastor, and John Hubbard serves as Teaching Pastor. Emily Mays oversees the children's ministry as Children's Director, a graduate of Wytheville Community College who leads the children's team, Sunday School classes, and the calendar of NorthStar Kids events. The church also has a dedicated security team, a Women's Ministry leadership core, and a men's ministry built around monthly prayer breakfasts.

What to expect on Sunday morning

Sunday at NorthStar begins at 9:30 AM with Bible Fellowship, the church's name for Sunday School. Greeters meet each family at the door and help place children, students, and adults in classes that fit their age or season of life. Classes range from nursery through college and young adults, with groups for new couples, widowed adults, and senior adults. The worship service starts at 10:30 AM in the fellowship hall and typically runs 60 to 90 minutes. Each gathering is a combination of music and worship, Bible-based preaching, announcements, and an offering, with the order occasionally varied. Sermons are always preached live by the pastor or an occasional guest speaker, never by video. Visitors are not asked to stand, sign anything, give money, or wear a name tag, though optional visitor cards and welcome bags from any greeter provide more information for those who want it.

Dress runs the full range. Jeans sit next to business casual next to a suit and tie in the same room, and the only expectation is that guests feel comfortable. The Sunday messages are livestreamed on Facebook each week and posted afterward to YouTube.

NorthStar Kids: safety built into every room

Children from newborn through fifth grade are the heart of the NorthStar Kids ministry. The goal is to come alongside parents in the work of personally discipling their children to be godly boys and girls. On Sunday, the nursery is open from 9:30 to 11:30 AM for the youngest children, with Sunday School for all ages running 9:30 to 10:30 and Children's Church continuing 10:30 to 11:30. Sunday nights at 5 PM offer another hour for kids. Wednesdays add a Kid's Hour from 6:30 to 7:30, with the nursery open during the same window.

Each age group is led by background-checked workers and teachers. The nursery (newborn through age 2) is led by Ms. Darlene and her team, with singing, reading, and simple Bible lessons. Preschool (ages 3-5) gathers for an age-appropriate lesson, snack, games, and play. During Bible Fellowship, elementary students split into K-2nd and 3rd-5th classes, and their teachers personally escort them into Children's Church before the main worship service. A printed sign-up at the check-in stand gives parents access to a regular newsletter.

Safety is woven into every step. Parents sign children in at a check-in stand, receive a numbered star that matches a tag on the child, and must present that same star to pick up the child after the service. The same parent or guardian who drops off must be the one to pick up; older siblings and family friends cannot release a child. First-time visitors complete a brief questionnaire about allergies and special needs, and a published well-child policy keeps sick children at home so that the classrooms stay healthy for everyone. No medications of any kind are administered.

Students finding their footing

Middle and high school students have their own space at NorthStar. During the 9:30 Bible Fellowship hour, students gather upstairs for music and a lesson tailored to the challenges of their stage of life. At the 10:30 worship service, sixth through twelfth graders join the adult congregation. Sunday nights at 5 PM bring a Student Service, and Wednesdays at 6:30 PM add a midweek gathering. There is also a class for college and young adults that brings life experience and biblical teaching together. The student ministry is overseen by Associate Pastor Gary Breeding, with a student ministries liaison, Chrissy, working alongside him. Events such as Hearts On Fire retreats and youth mission trips give students chances to serve beyond the church walls, and Operation Christmas Child shoebox packing is one of the ministry's year-round projects.

Women of Warfare, Young at Heart, and the men who sharpen iron

The Women's Ministry, called Women of Warfare (WOW), focuses on four anchors: Relationships, Encouragement, Spiritual insight, and Training. The Ladies Fellowship meets periodically for a relaxed evening of food, conversation, and Bible teaching, with quarterly SWAG gatherings that include a meal and program. The group's goal is to become the Titus 2 and Proverbs 31 women God intends, meeting one another in spiritual enrichment, local outreach, fellowship, and compassion.

Young at Heart is a separate ministry for women walking through a new season after the loss of their husbands. Its mission is encouragement, comfort, and support - in prayer and in person. The group sends cards to church members, fills treat bags for youth activities, packs snacks for the Fall Festival, hosts a monthly luncheon at a local restaurant on the second Thursday of each month, and gathers for an annual appreciation banquet.

The Men's Ministry centers on the truth that a spiritually empowered Christian man is immeasurable, and the enemy knows it. The men's monthly prayer breakfast meets at 8:00 AM on the last Saturday of every month with Pastor Gary. The church also hosts an annual Men's Conference that draws men from middle school through adulthood for a one-day gathering of teaching, food, and fellowship.

Worship through music

The NorthStar Church Worship Team leads congregational singing and is always open to new singers who feel called to serve. A separate Youth Worship Ministry invites middle and high school students into the team as well. Anyone interested in joining either group is invited to contact the church office.

An Acts 1:8 missions footprint

NorthStar has been designated by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as an Acts 1:8 church, and the missions page lays out that framework plainly. Bristol itself is the church's Jerusalem - the immediate mission field. Across Judea the church supports The Liberty Godparent Home, Virginia Baptist Children's Home, and International Student Ministries. In Samaria, the church participates in the Annie Armstrong Offering for North American missions, sends youth on mission trips, and walks alongside Charlotte and Mitchell Mask. To the ends of the earth, NorthStar supports the Jerusalem Assembly, the Lottie Moon Offering for international missions, Samaritan's Purse and Operation Christmas Child, and Voice of the Martyrs. The church collects Operation Christmas Child supplies throughout the year, focusing on a particular item each month and packing the shoeboxes together at a Christmas Packing Party.

Reaching into the Bristol community

Beyond missions, NorthStar lends regular support to a wide circle of local ministries. The list includes Abortion Alternatives, the Alcohol and Drug Prevention Coalition, Bristol Faith in Action, Bristol Outreach, Bristol Right to Life, Camp for Kids, Fellowship of Christian Athletes groups at local middle and high schools, Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, Haven of Rest / Grace House, The Hospice House, and the King University On-Campus Ministry. The church also participates in the Cross Project and the Bristol TN/VA Right to Life chapter. Family Movie Nights on Friday evenings in June and July bring the wider community onto the lawn for free family films, popcorn, and water, with donations collected for partners like Isaiah 117 House and Shabach Ministries Nigeria. The annual Fall Festival, held on a Saturday in October, opens the parking lot for face painting, a bouncy house, popcorn, a magic show, cotton candy, candy, trunk-or-treat, and hot dogs - free to all, with costumes encouraged.

What the church believes

NorthStar holds that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. The church identifies five ways it pursues its calling: educationally, through teaching that correctly handles the Word of truth; externally, by meeting together and encouraging one another; eternally, through a worshiping life lived for God's glory; evangelistically, as new creations in Christ; and emotionally, as lives transformed by the renewing of the mind. NorthStar also stands boldly for life and partners with the Cross Project and the Bristol TN/VA Right to Life chapter.

A building project on the horizon

The fellowship hall that hosts worship today is Phase 1 of a longer plan. Church offices, classrooms, a kitchen, and the multipurpose hall were built first. Phase 2 will add a permanent sanctuary. In the meantime, every Sunday and Wednesday gathering finds a way to make the current space work - complete with greeters, a check-in stand, a security team, and a children's wing designed to keep the next generation safe and learning.
