An Outreach of Calvary Chapel in Whittier
Morningstar Christian Chapel sits on Leffingwell Road in Whittier, California, a fellowship that grew from a home Bible study in April 1985 into one of the larger Calvary Chapel congregations in the area. After meeting in a rented elementary school for its first three years, the church moved in 1988 to its present location, where continual growth led to added classrooms and a sanctuary that was later expanded to twice its original size. The church identifies itself as an outreach of Calvary Chapel and teaches the books of the Bible one chapter at a time, a Calvary Chapel hallmark that shapes nearly everything that happens inside the building.
Sunday Services: Three Times in the Main Sanctuary
Worship services gather in the Main Sanctuary at 8 AM, 10 AM, and 12 PM, with Senior Pastor Wade O'Neill walking the congregation verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark. The early hour offers a quieter gathering, while the 10 AM service is the church's largest and is also interpreted in American Sign Language for the Deaf and hard of hearing. A welcome booth staffed by volunteers greets first-time visitors, and ushers hand out bulletins and help families find the right classroom. Services are also broadcast live on YouTube, and the audio is recorded for an archive that stretches back many years.
Wednesday Nights in Revelation
On Wednesday evenings at 7 PM, the same teaching style continues in the Main Sanctuary with a verse-by-verse study of the Book of Revelation, again led by Pastor Wade O'Neill. Like the 10 AM Sunday service, the Wednesday gathering is interpreted in ASL through the Deaf Ministry. Before each Wednesday service, the Intercessory Prayer team gathers at 6:30 PM in Room 4 to pray for the service, the teachers, and the worship leaders; a parallel prayer group meets at 10:30 AM on Sundays in the same room.
Deaf Ministry and ASL Interpretation
Few features of Morningstar are as distinctive as its long-standing Deaf Ministry. The ministry exists because, as the church states, "if someone can't hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they cannot believe it," and only an estimated 2% of the Deaf community know Jesus as their Savior. Trained interpreters make the 10 AM Sunday and 7 PM Wednesday services accessible, and additional deaf-friendly signage and resources are available. The ministry welcomes volunteers fluent in ASL who feel called to interpret Bible studies and worship.
Children from Nursery through Sixth Grade
Parents are encouraged to drop off children at any of the morning services so they can worship without distraction. The Nursery, divided into an infant (non-walking) room in Room 1 and a toddler (walking) room in Room 2, accepts babies up to age 2 and is staffed by trained caregivers who have cleared background checks. Sunday School serves children ages 2 through sixth grade, with sign-in and sign-out procedures, a numbered card system flashed on a sanctuary display if a teacher needs a parent, and a strict "no sick kid" wellness policy. Children's Worship is woven into every class, with a volunteer team moving from room to room leading energetic songs that teach Bible principles, and the ministry also holds periodic Kids Worship Days where all classes combine for an extended time of praise.
Junior High, High School, and Young Adults
Junior High ministry lays a scriptural foundation through Bible study and application, while the High School ministry meets in Room 16 at 10 AM and 12 PM on Sundays and at 7 PM on Wednesdays, currently walking through the book of Romans on Wednesday nights and James on Sunday mornings. Six-week Servant Leadership classes are offered for students who want to grow as leaders. For ages 18 to 28, Morningstar Young Adults meets on Thursday nights at 7 PM in the Fellowship Hall, with worship, fellowship, and verse-by-verse teaching that has, in recent studies, moved from Genesis toward Revelation. A podcast of recent studies is available for those who can't attend in person.
Small Groups for Men, Women, Married Couples, and Seniors
Inductive Bible studies are the heart of small-group life. Men's Small Groups meet Thursdays at 6 PM in the Fellowship Hall, and Women's Small Group Bible Studies run on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM and Tuesday evenings at 6:45 PM, also in the Fellowship Hall, with a Spring series on eight women of Scripture who encountered Jesus. Married Couples Fellowship gathers on the second Saturday of each month at 5:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall for a potluck, worship, Bible study, and fellowship, occasionally meeting off-site for special gatherings. The Young at Heart 55+ Ministry meets Thursday mornings at 10 AM in the Multi-Purpose Room for study, worship, and fellowship, and the Mending Hearts ministry gathers widows on the fourth Friday of each month at a local home in Whittier from 6 to 7:30 PM.
How Much More: A Weekly Food Ministry
One of the most tangible expressions of the church's faith is its How Much More food distribution, which has met on Tuesday mornings since May 2001. The outreach moved from a once-a-month event to a weekly one after its very first day, when a single mother named Michelle received food for her family. Since then, more than 1,900 families have been served. Before the food is handed out, recipients gather in the Mini Chapel for a Bible study taught in English with Spanish translation, with an opportunity to receive Christ and prayer. Food items can be dropped off in the Foyer during services or in the church office during office hours.
Care Ministries Inside and Outside the Walls
The Care Ministries branch of the church includes the Intercessory Prayer team, an Ushers Ministry that seats worshipers and patrols the parking lot, a Special Needs Ministry that meets in Room 6 during the 10 AM Sunday service for people of all ages with autism, cerebral palsy, and other learning differences, the Christ & Cancer support group that meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room, and a Women's Prayer Partner Ministry that fields immediate prayer requests. Beyond the campus, a Convalescent Ministry visits the aged and those recovering, a Knitting Ministry creates items for those in need of warmth, and a Widow's Ministry walks alongside women who have experienced loss.
Reaching Out: Whittier, Watts, Prisons, and the Homeless
Outreach is treated as a way of putting feet on faith. Neighborhood Outreach teams go into surrounding neighborhoods on the fourth Saturday of each month at 10 AM, handing out flyers and invitations in pairs. The Watts Outreach ministers to the inner city, the Fred Jordan Outreach serves the homeless, and the Jail Ministry, which requires a security clearance, ministers to the incarcerated. U-Turn for Christ works with those battling addiction, and the church supports an Israel trip planned for 2027.
Missions: A Sending Church from Whittier
Using the book of Acts as a model, Morningstar commits to planting and supporting churches both domestically and internationally. The church supports missionaries including Juan Carlos Aguilar, who planted Capilla Del Calvario near the Hongo prison in Baja California; the Barillaro family at Calvary Chapel Mexicali, where a new 700-seat sanctuary has been built; the Roenspie family at the Calvary Training Center in La Gloria, Tijuana; Michael and Michelle Pratt at Horizon Fellowship in Lviv, Ukraine; Dan and Debbie Finfrock of Intensive Care Ministries, which trains pastors in inductive Bible study; Joe and Julie Guglielmo at Calvary Chapel Manitowoc, Wisconsin; and Eric and Jennifer Brubaker at Calvary Harvest Hermiston in Oregon.
Worship, Sound, and the Media Team
The Worship Ministry leads the congregation in praise, drawing on the model of worship leaders who, like those in 2 Chronicles 20, go out ahead of the army. The Sound and Media team amplifies the teaching, mixes live music, projects song lyrics, captures video for those watching at home, takes photos of church events, and produces audio for the Chapel Store and the Growing Thru Grace radio ministry. A separate Live Stream Sound Tech ensures that those watching online receive clear audio. Musicians and singers are encouraged to apply.
Arise Cafe and the Chapel Store
Before and after Sunday services, the Arise Cafe opens from 7 AM to 2 PM, and before Wednesday services it opens from 5 PM to 7 PM, closing during services. Volunteers serve homemade meals that vary week to week, with Italian, Mexican, Korean, and comfort food classics, alongside coffee, pizza, pot pies, and desserts. The Chapel Store, open Wednesday from 3 PM to 9 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 2 PM, sells books, gifts, jewelry, Christian greeting cards, Bibles, and decorations, with all proceeds supporting the Growing Thru Grace radio ministry.
What the Church Believes
Morningstar teaches that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God, that Jesus is the Son who atoned for sin on the cross, and that salvation is by faith alone. They affirm the church as a fellowship of believers created for God's worship, the fellowship (koinonia) of all true believers, the priority of gathering together to provoke one another to love and good works, the importance of discipleship and equipping the saints, and the centrality of agape love as the only true basis for Christian fellowship. The church is not a denominational fellowship, and it does not oppose denominations, only their over-emphasis on doctrinal differences that divide the body of Christ.
New Believers and Getting Connected
Those who have received Christ are invited into a six-week New Believers Class held on Sundays from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM several times a year, walking through ten lessons covering assurance of salvation, prayer, the Holy Spirit, water baptism, communion, and the hope of His coming. A free New Believers book with weekly homework is provided, and the New King James Version is used for scripture references. The Church Center app, available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play, keeps members connected to the calendar, news, and online giving, while a monthly e-bulletin and daily devotionals written by Pastor Wade O'Neill keep the teaching in front of readers throughout the week.
