Sundays on Atlee Road
Grace Christian Church gathers each Sunday morning at 8067 Atlee Road in Mechanicsville, Virginia. The doors open early enough for Life Groups to begin at 9:45 AM, and the main worship service starts at 10:45 AM. The congregation's heartbeat is a single sentence: To Make Disciples who Make Disciples. Everything from the way a first-time guest is greeted to the way a second grader learns a Bible story to the way communion is passed each week flows out of that calling.
The motto painted across the church's welcome is short enough to remember: Love, Grow, and Serve. Those three words shape the calendar, the small groups, the children's wing, and the mission budget, and they give the church a clear sense of direction for anyone walking in the door for the first time.
A Contemporary Service Built Around Communion
The Sunday morning service runs about an hour and includes singing, testimonies, communion, prayer, and an offering. Worship is led by Daren Buchanan and the praise team, and the music style is contemporary. Between songs, members occasionally share personal testimonies of what God has been doing in their lives. A Bible-based message follows, taught in a way that is both creative and practical, intended to engage minds and challenge hearts to view life's ups and downs from God's perspective.
Communion is observed every week. Bread and juice are passed through the rows as a celebration of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Visitors are welcome but not obligated to participate; if someone prefers to pass the tray along, that is perfectly fine. The offering is taken up in the same spirit, framed as an act of worship for those who call Grace home, with no pressure on guests to give. Online giving and text-to-give (texting any dollar amount to 84321) are available for those who prefer them, and the church specifically encourages generosity that does not rely on credit card debt.
Life Groups and the Three Marks of Discipleship
Long before the worship service begins, Life Groups are already meeting. Several gather on Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM, and others meet on different nights throughout the week in homes and on campus. A life group at Grace is a small gathering built for learning more about God, encouraging other believers, sharing struggles, and serving one another and the community.
The church organizes the discipleship journey around three marks: Love, Grow, and Serve. Love is the conviction that genuine affection for God and for one another is what convinces the world that disciples of Jesus are real. Grow is the recognition that no one reaches perfection in faith, and that life groups exist to make space for ongoing growth. Serve is the understanding that a disciple gives time, energy, and resources back to the church and to the broader community. Twice a year, all life groups combine for a single Sunday morning conversation about Grace's plans and direction, and anyone interested in joining a group can browse the current listings online.
Grace Kids: Three Doors on the Left
When a family walks through the main doors, the children's check-in is straight ahead to the left. The children's wing, called Kidzville, is divided into three environments designed for different stages of childhood.
- Nursery (birth through age 2) provides snacks and diapers, with parents asked to note any allergies at drop-off.
- Sunshine Garden (preschool and kindergarten) introduces children to the foundational stories of the Christian faith through hands-on activities and creative play.
- Kids Zone (first through fifth grade) uses the Orange curriculum to build a teaching foundation on Sunday mornings, with parent resources to continue the same lessons at home throughout the week.
Every child receives a name tag at check-in, and parents receive a matching tag that is required for pickup after the service. The Grace Kids team is intentional about providing a safe, fun, and age-appropriate environment where children can experience God's love alongside their peers.
Grace Students: A Weekly Rhythm for Teens
Grace Students is the ministry designed for middle and high schoolers. The student ministry operates with two weekly touchpoints. On Sunday mornings, students meet at 9:45 AM for group time, looking at God's word together and building friendships before joining the rest of the church for worship. On most Sunday evenings, the group gathers from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM for food, activities, games, and teaching aimed at deepening faith and relationships.
The monthly rhythm is consistent from month to month. The first Sunday of the month rotates between host homes run by parents of students. The second Sunday is a service or spotlight night, designed to put faith into action. The third Sunday takes the group off campus for something fun. The fourth Sunday is a churchwide gathering. Every week is rooted in scripture and centered on God.
Grace Students uses the Grow curriculum and is led by Youth and Family Minister Chris Bareford. Preteens also have the option of attending CIY SuperStart, a Gospel-centered overnight lock-in weekend held at the church each winter.
A Calendar Built Around Community
Grace keeps a busy and welcoming calendar. Worship Nights are held periodically on Sunday evenings from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, drawing the church together for an extended time of singing, prayer, and reflection. Discover Grace is the church's introductory gathering for newcomers and those considering membership, featuring a light breakfast, an overview of beliefs and values, and a chance to meet the leadership.
Family-friendly events fill the warmer months, including a Family Picnic at Creamfield Farms, an Ice Cream Social on the church lawn, Park and Play Pizza Day at Three Lakes Park, and a Spring Festival and Fall Festival co-hosted with the Mechanicsville Elementary School PTA, both featuring inflatables, carnival games, face painting, and an Easter egg hunt in the spring. Vacation Bible School runs for one week each summer, with the 2026 theme set as Rainforest Falls. Twice a year, Church Clean Up Days invite the whole congregation to care for the campus together, tackling projects like mulching, bush removal, and playground updates.
Senior Breakfasts are held on the second Thursday of each month at 8:30 AM at Cold Harbor Restaurant, welcoming anyone who considers themselves a senior, including seniors in high school or college. Baby Dedication ceremonies are scheduled annually to celebrate the children born into the church family, with parents committing publicly to raise them in the faith. At Christmas, the church hosts a Grace Family Christmas evening featuring a children's play, food, and fellowship. Generosity Sunday, held each November, invites members to give above their regular tithe as a way of reducing the church's mortgage before its interest rate adjusts at year end.

East End Pregnancy Center, founded in 2012 and offering medical services since 2019, is another local partner.

Each summer, Grace raises funds for Harvest View through a community yard sale held at the church pavilion, with proceeds going directly to the mission. The church also sends volunteers to Night to Shine, a prom-style evening for people with special needs hosted at Fairmount Christian Church, where Grace teams staff the Hangout Room.
What Grace Believes
At the foundation of everything the church does are five core values. Grounded in Truth means that Jesus is the truth and His Word is the foundation for every decision and conversation. Radical Generosity calls the church to be generous with time, talent, and treasure, recognizing that all of it belongs to God. Authentic Love is the conviction that deep, genuine love for God and for people is both evidence of faith and proof of how much God loves the world. Countless Second Chances reflects a commitment to extend the same grace and forgiveness the congregation has received, always leaving room for restoration. Engage in Community means investing in relationships for encouragement, support, and mutual growth, and seeking the good of the neighborhoods where members live.
On doctrine, Grace affirms belief in one God who exists in three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit); in scripture as inspired, inerrant, and infallible; in the preciousness of every human life as created in God's image; in the reality of Satan as a spiritual enemy; in the universal need for salvation through Jesus Christ; in baptism by immersion as an act of obedience; and in the church as a global community of believers across time and place.
Leadership at Grace
Will Pannell has served as Senior Minister at Grace since 2016. He and his wife Hannah married in 2018 and have three children, Graham, Everly, and Liam, plus a dog named Deacon. Worship is led by Daren Buchanan, a member of the praise team since 2016 who became Worship Leader in December 2025. Daren also teaches private music lessons at Mechanicsville Music and holds a Master Certificate in Songwriting and Guitar from Berklee College of Music. Chris Bareford serves as the Youth and Family Minister, overseeing Grace Students and supporting families.
The spiritual leadership of the church is shared with a team of three elders. Page Pigg serves as Chairman of the Elders, alongside Tom Agnew and David Williams. The elders can be reached collectively by email for prayer requests, counsel, or church matters. Together with the staff, the elders oversee the direction, teaching, and care of the Grace congregation.
