The Story of the Oldest Church in Linden
Linden United Methodist Church holds the distinction of being the oldest church in the city of Linden. The original congregation was officially incorporated on September 25, 1866, with the incorporation records still housed in the Union County Clerk's Office in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Its first building was a former schoolhouse located on North Stiles Street near present-day Knopf Street, purchased for $1,250. In 1881, the building was relocated to its current site on North Wood Avenue, on land donated by the Blancke family. As the city of Linden grew around it, the church expanded alongside its neighbors. A parsonage was built next door in 1907. A gymnasium followed in 1911 and was used by Linden High School for a nominal fee, and a kitchen was added in 1916 along with electricity for the church building, although the parsonage itself did not receive electrical service until nine years later. In 1921, the church expanded further by purchasing the remaining property adjacent to the parsonage for $2,600. By 1925, the original structure had been replaced by the current church building, with a basement beneath the gym, and membership at the time stood at 161 adults and 412 children.
A Building That Shaped the Community
The church has long been a hub for activity beyond its own worship services. It sponsored the very first Boy Scout troop in Linden, Troop #1, which met weekly in the gymnasium, and the gym also hosted Sunday School classes and other community gatherings. In 1962, a large new wing was added to the church, bringing a social hall, kitchen, bathrooms, offices, and additional Sunday School rooms. By that point, 490 adults and 295 children called the church home. In 1973, a new parsonage was purchased, and the older parsonage was eventually replaced by a Memorial Garden that continues to beautify the grounds. Over the decades, the building has hosted Kiwanis luncheons, community meetings, rummage sales, Weight Watchers meetings, scholarship programs, weddings, celebrations, and civic functions. Aldersgate Hall, the social hall, is available to rent for community events.

A retired Special Education educator who taught in the public school system for more than forty years, she now serves as pastor of Linden United Methodist Church and director of Building Blocks Daycare and Pre-K 3. She is passionate about creating outreach community programs focused on holistic wellness. Reverend Esther is the mother of two sons and the grandmother of four, and she is known to share her days with her dog, Caramelo, who brings energy and joy to her life and ministry.
