A Church on Olive Drive in Trafford
Level Green Presbyterian Church has long been a fixture of the Trafford community, meeting at 105 Olive Drive in the northern corner of Westmoreland County. The congregation worships in the Presbyterian Church (USA) tradition and belongs to Redstone Presbytery. Its reach, however, stretches well beyond the brick-and-mortar building on Olive Drive. Alongside its Sunday schedule and a long-running preschool, the church runs a Scholé community for home-school families, hosts a GriefShare group for the bereaved, partners with mission organizations in the Pittsburgh area and the Caribbean, and sends children each summer to Pine Springs Camp.
Two Traditional Services and a Summer Schedule
Sunday mornings at Level Green follow a regular rhythm from Labor Day through Memorial Day: worship at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., with Sunday School for all ages from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. The two services are virtually identical. Each includes Bible readings, prayers, congregational responses, and hymns led by piano and organ. The choir sings at the second service. A sermon opens the Word for the week, and the Lord's Supper is celebrated at least once a month.
From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the schedule simplifies. A single 9:00 a.m. worship service gathers the whole church, and Sunday School takes the summer off. Children's Church does not run during the summer months either.
For those who cannot attend in person, services are livestreamed on YouTube and a worship archive is available online. The church will also arrange a ride to church or provide an audio CD of the service through the office.
What Level Green Believes
The congregation's mission statement frames everything else: Jesus Christ has commissioned the church to prepare and send its membership to spread His Word in the community and the world through worship, word, and work. Eight points summarize the church's beliefs. The Bible is the Word of God, inspired, infallible, and authoritative. There is one sovereign God in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, who died on the cross and rose again. The Holy Spirit convicts, empowers, and guides. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone. The true Church is made up of all who have saving faith in Jesus Christ, expressed in local congregations where the Word is preached, the sacraments are administered, and fellowship is maintained. Believers are commanded to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world and are called to a life of service and self-giving love.
Family Ministry and the Next Generation
Family Ministry Coordinator Cara Rach oversees much of what happens for children and families. During the 10:30 a.m. service, well-staffed child care is offered for the youngest children. Older children stay in worship until a Children's Message with the pastor, then are dismissed to Children's Church in Room 210. The nursery room is open during both services, equipped so a parent can hear the service while caring for a child who needs a quieter space.
Sunday School runs from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings during the program year. The nursery (ages three and under) meets in Room 211, an elementary class gathers in Room 202 with Cara Rach teaching, and adults have two choices: Room 115 and the Adult Lounge, where Pastor Geoff Rach teaches.
Kingdom Kids is the church's elementary Bible club, meeting on Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Lounge. Children learn the Bible and memorize scripture through games, songs, and crafts. All volunteers and staff carry current clearances.
On the third Sunday of each month at 5:00 p.m., the church hosts Simple Suppers in Fellowship Hall. Cara and a team of volunteers serve a family-style meal as a time of intergenerational fellowship, with donations accepted to cover the cost of food. RSVPs come in by the Thursday before.
Grief Care Through GriefShare
A GriefShare support group meets at Level Green on Tuesdays from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. during the fall and winter program. Each gathering begins with a video featuring counsel from grief experts and personal stories, followed by a time of sharing. Topics include what is normal in grief, how to handle difficult emotions, and what to do with regrets and questions. Anyone in the community grieving the loss of a loved one is welcome.
Adult Discipleship and Small Groups
Adult Bible Study is offered twice a week - Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. The current study walks through The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis by Nancy Guthrie.
Other recurring groups include the Web Craft Group (second and last Thursdays of each month at 11:00 a.m. in the Adult Lounge, where beginners are welcome), the Teen Debate Club (first Sunday of each month, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Youth Lounge, for ages 6 to 12), the Young Adult Bible Study (second Sunday of each month, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Adult Lounge), and a Parenting Support Group on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Music and Worship Helpers
Forrest Moore directs music at Level Green. A retired music teacher from the Southmoreland School District, he taught elementary and secondary music and choir for thirty-two years and served as music director and organist at First Baptist Church in Greensburg for thirty-nine years. He continues as choral director at Jeannette McKee Middle School and as accompanist for the Jeannette High School Choir, and has directed the Irwin Male Chorus since 1999.
Choir practice is held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room. Elizabeth Kuhns serves as Audio Video Technician, making sure the livestream and in-house sound run smoothly each week. The congregation also welcomes volunteers as worship helpers - greeting, handing out bulletins, and helping with the offering - with sign-ups coordinated through the church office.
Mission Beyond the Walls
Level Green's Mission Ministry, chaired by Robin Burges and Elton Laffoon, supports a steady list of local and global partners. Within Trafford, the church supports the Trafford - Level Green Food Bank and the Back Packs to Go program, which sends food home with children facing weekend hunger. In the wider Pittsburgh region, the church partners with Penn Trafford Young Life and the Women's Choice Network. Internationally, the Caribbean Youth Network is among its mission relationships. Karen Oskin coordinates mission interests for the congregation.
The Mission Ministry also leads seasonal projects such as an annual coat drive collecting coats, hats, and gloves for distribution through Refuge Church in neighboring Manor.
Level Green Presbyterian Preschool
Sharing the building with the church is Level Green Presbyterian Preschool, an early-learning program that has welcomed young families for years. Registration opens each year for the fall program year, and the preschool welcomes inquiries through Joan Bennett at the church office. The preschool also has an opening for a teacher's aide working Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Scholé Community
Level Green hosts a Scholé Community for home-school families in the congregation and the wider region. Scholé Communities gather around a Christian classical approach to learning, with shared resources and curriculum support. Membership in Level Green is not required to participate, and registration for the 2026-2027 year is open through the church office.
Pine Springs Camp
Many children from Level Green head each summer to Pine Springs Camp, a Christian camp the church actively supports and recommends. Pine Springs' philosophy centers on helping each camper encounter Christ through teaching about the unconditional love of Christ, recognizing the unique gifts God has given each young person, modeling a proper way to celebrate and play in God's creation, and experiencing the importance of Christian community. With a 6:1 camper-to-counselor ratio, daily Bible interactions, small-group environments, and camps grouped into adventure, wet-n-wild, elective, and specialty tracks, the program balances high-energy fun with personal attention.
Leadership and Staff
Pastor Geoff Rach grew up in the North Hills of Pittsburgh and is a graduate of Waynesburg College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He served in Redstone Presbytery at a yoked parish outside Uniontown and in Washington Presbytery as Associate Pastor at Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, most recently pastoring Hewitt Church in Greene County before coming to Trafford. His wife, Cara, serves as Family Ministry Coordinator. Forrest Moore is the Director of Music.
A team of elected elders and deacons governs the church. The Session (the board of elders) is grouped into committees for Discipleship, Worship, Mission, Property, Stewardship, Outreach, and Nominating, with two co-chairs per committee.
Visiting Level Green
The church building is set back from Olive Drive with ample parking on the side and rear. Handicapped and mobility-friendly spaces are at the rear right of the church, and a wheel chair is available just inside that entrance for anyone who needs it. First-time visitor parking spots are marked as soon as you come in off Olive Drive. There is no dress code - the range runs from very casual to coats and ties. The main entrance to the sanctuary and the office are at the front of the building and clearly marked. Office hours run Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (9:00 a.m. to noon during the summer).
