Tucked into a residential stretch of West Pomona Drive on Arvada's west side, King of Kings Lutheran Church has been part of its neighborhood since 1973. The Missouri Synod congregation describes itself as a community of believers who love Jesus, one another, and others, and who seek to honor Christ by loving God with all they are and have and loving their neighbors as themselves. Whether newcomers are stopping in for Sunday worship, dropping by a Bible study, joining an AA meeting, or pitching in on a food drive, the same door on Pomona opens for them.
An Interim Season, Steady Pulpit
The congregation is currently served by its Intentional Interim, Pastor Jeff, while the process of calling a new pastor moves forward. During the transition, vacancy pastors also help fill the pulpit. Regular worship has continued throughout, and the leadership has kept the focus on the rhythms of Word and sacrament that have shaped the congregation for decades.
Sunday Mornings: Worship Then Bible Study
Worship is held at 9:00 AM on Sundays. The service follows the historic Lutheran liturgy, with Holy Communion offered to confessing and believing Christians who share the congregation's beliefs about Christ's presence in the meal. Anyone with questions about Communion is invited to speak with the pastor.
At 10:30 AM, the same Sunday morning, a Bible study gathers around the table. The group is currently working through Peter's first letter, and everyone is welcome to come, listen, and discuss, whether they have years of Bible reading behind them or have never opened one.
Bible Studies Around the Week
The church takes seriously the verse 'The teaching of Your word gives light' (Psalm 119:130). Several studies run through the week, both in person and online.
- Women's Group. The second and fourth Mondays at 6:30 PM. A place to share life, care for one another, and study God's Word together.
- Men's Group. Tuesdays at 6:30 PM. Men gather to grow in community and to look at current events and life issues in light of Scripture.
- Zoom Bible Study on Hebrews. Mondays at 9:00 AM.
- Zoom Bible Study on Hebrews. Wednesdays at 7:00 PM.
A chapter-by-chapter reading plan that walks through the entire Bible in a year is also posted, mapping daily readings from Genesis through Revelation across the calendar.
The Sacraments: Baptism and Holy Communion
King of Kings teaches that God uses Baptism and Holy Communion as means of grace. Baptism is presented as a gift for all, including infants, in which God combines His life-giving Word with water and gives new birth "of water and the Spirit." The congregation baptizes individuals, children, and whole households, and a three-step process is offered: requesting a baptism, meeting informally with a pastor to talk through its meaning, and then celebrating the sacrament.
Holy Communion is celebrated as a gift at the Lord's table for confessing and believing Christians. The congregation teaches that, in this meal, believers receive the true body and blood of Jesus along with the forgiveness of sins and power for Christian living.
What King of Kings Believes
As a member congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, King of Kings Believes, Teaches, and Confesses a classic Lutheran summary of the Christian faith. The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is the inspired and authoritative Word of God. God is Triune: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Son, Jesus Christ, is fully God and fully man, born of the Virgin, sinless, crucified for sinners, risen from the dead, and the sole mediator between God and humanity. The Holy Spirit draws sinners to Christ, creates faith through Word and sacraments, and equips believers to grow and serve.
Humans are born sinful and in need of God's forgiveness. That forgiveness comes through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and is received by grace through faith. Eternal life is a free gift, and Jesus Christ will return as the victorious Lord of all.
Missions: Local and Far Away
The church works to share the love of Christ through several ongoing ministries.
- Food Collection. Each week, non-perishable items are collected and delivered to a local food bank.
- The Action Center. During the Christmas season, the congregation adopts families through The Action Center and purchases gifts for them.
- Alternatives Pregnancy Center. Formula, diapers, and other supplies are collected to support the center's work.
- Foreign Missionary. The congregation financially supports the Helge family, LCMS missionaries serving in the Czech Republic and Eurasia.
- Mittens and Scarves. Members knit or sew mittens and scarves (and others donate supplies) that are given to local shelters to help neighbors through Colorado's cold months.
AA Meetings in the Basement
Four times a week, the church basement becomes a meeting place for Alcoholics Anonymous. All meetings are open: Mondays at 12:00 PM, Wednesdays at 7:00 PM, Thursdays at 12:00 PM, and Fridays at 12:00 PM. Formats rotate through step meetings, discussion, the Life Recovery Bible, and Big Book study.
Messages and Resources
Sermons from the congregation are posted online through a YouTube messages channel, and a Resources area gathers links and tools for further study. The full church, including its AA meetings and Bible studies, gathers at 8300 W Pomona Drive in Arvada.
