Worship is led by Cory Wester, a 2024 Charleston Southern University graduate now pursuing a Master of Divinity through Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, with plans to add a Ph.D. in Christian apologetics or church history later on. His heart for the ministry, he says, is to deepen his understanding of the faith and to equip others to encounter and defend the truth of Jesus Christ.
The teaching portion of the gathering moves through longer series - recent walks have stepped through 1 Thessalonians, Hosea, Galatians, the Psalms, Philippians, and other books of the Bible in succession. The aim is verse-by-verse Bible teaching that lets Scripture set the agenda rather than individual topics du jour. Members describe the morning as friendly, with longtime attenders making a point to greet first-time visitors.
Holmes Kids for Children
The children's ministry, called Holmes Kids, runs at the same 11 a.m. hour so that parents can attend the main service with full attention. A secure check-in system prints name tags for children and parents, then walks the children to their classrooms. The nursery covers infants through age four, and a separate program serves kindergarten through fifth grade. Volunteers use crafts, games, songs, and Bible stories to introduce children to God's plan of redemption and to what it means to follow Jesus in daily life.
The director is Trisha Taylor, who has lived most of her life in the Park Circle area and also serves on the logistics team for the North Charleston Fire Department. She sees children's ministry as her calling and works to make every classroom safe, fun, and Christ-centered.

Holmes Avenue Baptist Church is affiliated with three voluntary Baptist bodies: the Southern Baptist Convention, the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and the Charleston Baptist Association. Its statement of faith closely follows the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.

Article II teaches the unity and Trinity of God - one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Pastoral Team and Pastoral Residents
The pastoral team includes two pastors and a growing roster of pastoral residents. Pastor Bryan has served the church for ten years while remaining bi-vocational; he also works at Charleston Southern University and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Charleston Southern and a Master of Divinity in Christian Ministry from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. His wife Miranda works as a nurse, and they have two children, Adeline and Noah.
Pastor Walter joined Holmes Avenue after several years of ministry, including church planting and revitalization across South Carolina. He and his wife Kelly have two children, Perry and Molly. He holds a Bachelor's in Christian Studies from Charleston Southern and a recently completed Master of Divinity in Preaching and Pastoral Ministries from Southeastern.
The church has also developed a pastoral residency program to train younger ministers. Joey Chambers anchors his work in Romans 1:16 and prays with the motto "Pray and do work!" He and his wife Lindsey have two children, Joseph and Scarlette, and he loves sign language in addition to theological conversation.
Orion Flanagan and his wife Fabiana relocated to Charleston from Tampa on Air Force orders with the long-term goal of commissioning as a chaplain. He studies Christian history, apologetics, and counseling in addition to his residency work. Thomas Hill has lived in the Charleston area for decades, joined Holmes Avenue in 2021, and hopes to pursue further education in biblical counseling to support mental well-being. David Hellmig, who recently married Katie, previously served as worship leader at Cooper River Baptist before joining the residency at Holmes Avenue; he works in pathology at Trident Medical Center and loves how the Old Testament points to and grounds the New Testament faith.
Community Groups, Brotherhood, Women after God
Holmes Avenue sees community as one of the most important things a Christian can pursue, and the church's small-group ministry is built around three overlapping rhythms.
Community Groups are the primary on-ramp. Groups meet on Sunday evenings at 5 p.m. for a shared dinner, time of fellowship, and a deeper study of the Bible passage taught in the morning service. Children are welcome, and groups run through the academic year, with the fall session kicking off in late September.
Brotherhood, the men's ministry, gathers on the second Saturday of each month at 8 a.m. for Bible study and fellowship. Women after God, the women's ministry, meets bi-weekly on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and once a month on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. The three environments together are positioned as the main pathway for newcomers to make friends and grow as disciples alongside other believers.
Kenosis Student Ministry
Middle and high school students meet under the name Kenosis Student Ministry, drawn from the Greek word used in Philippians 2:7 to describe Christ emptying Himself for the sake of others. Students gather in the Fellowship Hall on the church campus every other Friday evening. The stated mission is to guide and teach youth to grow in humility, serve others in love, and live purposefully to honor and glorify God - a phrase that mirrors the church's broader motto about loving God and loving people.
The student ministry is one of the church's most intentional points of investment in the next generation, complementing Holmes Kids for younger children and the Community Groups for adults. Parents with students in fifth grade and up can connect with the team to find out when the next Friday gathering will be held.
Reaching the Park Circle Neighborhood
Outreach is treated as a regular rhythm rather than an annual event. Each October, members set up at the North Charleston Harvest Festival on Montague Avenue, handing out candy, water, and giveaways to families streaming through the festival. Each December, they bring an entry to the North Charleston Christmas Parade, walking alongside the route as a visible presence in the community.
Beyond these city events, the church also serves as a regional drop-off location for Operation Christmas Child, the Samaritan's Purse shoebox ministry. Each November during National Collection Week, families across the area bring their packed shoeboxes to Holmes Avenue, and the church team helps organize and load them onto shipping trucks headed for distribution around the world.

Sharing the Campus with Charleston Bilingual Academy
Since August 2023, the church has been sharing its campus with Charleston Bilingual Academy, an intercultural, Christ-centered school that offers Spanish and Mandarin immersion for elementary and middle-school students. CBA had previously been hosted at Friendship Baptist Church, and the two congregations continue to partner in supporting the school. Hosting the academy on-site gives the church additional daily touchpoints with Park Circle families while giving CBA a permanent home in the heart of the neighborhood.
CBA's presence on campus is part of a broader pattern at Holmes Avenue of opening the building for ministry partners. The same campus hosts the Fellowship Hall where Kenosis Student Ministry meets on Friday evenings, as well as the children's classrooms used by Holmes Kids on Sunday mornings and the office space that is open on Wednesdays.
