Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church sits at the corner of Hawthorne Lane and East Eighth Street in Charlotte, North Carolina, where it has stood since 1916. The congregation describes itself as multigenerational, with a blended worship style that pulls in music and arts from many genres, and it is known for feeling, in its own words, "like home." A weekday preschool, a year-round sandwich ministry, and a long-running cold-weather shelter for unhoused neighbors are all part of what the church calls its work of following Jesus, making disciples, and transforming the world.
A Century on Hawthorne Lane
Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church officially began as a congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South on December 5, 1915, with a charter membership of 189. The first service was held in Elizabeth College, the building now known as Presbyterian Hospital. A lot on the corner of Hawthorne Lane and East Eighth Street was deeded to the church by the Oakhurst Land Company, and the first service on this site was held in the "new building" on December 3, 1916. That site remains the church's current location.
In April 1993, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission and the Charlotte City Council designated Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church as a Historic Landmark. The designation was awarded for architecturally significant features including the bell tower, slate roof, nave ceiling of wormy chestnut (an American wood now extinct), and stained glass windows with cast stone tracery. The interior woodwork moldings, wooden screen, balustrades, wainscot, and panels were built around the volume and shape of the interior spaces provided by the Akron architectural plan.
Worship in a Blended, Creative Style
Worship at Hawthorne Lane is described by the congregation as "a wonderful blend of the old and the new." The service pulls in the best of classical and traditional church music alongside contemporary arts, with elements that change weekly but always revolve around the Word of God. The music is led by a chancel choir and a praise team, with repertoire ranging from meditative selections and gospel to praise and worship songs. Multimedia and the arts are also part of the experience, alongside preaching, prayer, scripture, and fellowship.
Worship begins in the sanctuary at 10:30 am every Sunday morning. Visitors are invited to come as they are. Children begin in the sanctuary with their families and leave for children's church during the service; nursery is available for babies and young children, with check-in starting at 10:20 am. Services are livestreamed online for those who prefer to worship from home, and past services are available on YouTube and Vimeo.
First-Time Visitors
The church acknowledges that attending a church service for the first time can feel intimidating, and offers a few practical details. Parking is available to the right of the church building at 501 Hawthorne Lane, with additional street parking nearby. The elevator is accessible through the door at the end of the walkway by the playground, and handicap parking is available in front of the playground and on the side of the building. Nursery care and the Kids 501 worship experience for 1st through 5th graders mean that children of every age are accounted for during the service.
Wednesday Nights Around the Table
Every Wednesday night the congregation comes together around a homemade dinner prepared by the Spirit Squad from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, followed by programming from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. The meal is part of the experience, a time to connect in a warm and welcoming environment. After dinner, adults participate in small groups, while children and youth engage in age-appropriate ministry programs.
For children ages 3 through 5th grade, Wednesday nights are called M3: Music, Mission, Message. Kids experience singing time, a Bible story, and mission opportunities, and are split into two groups that each sing an anthem in church a couple of times through the season.
Kids 501 and Vacation Bible School
On Sunday mornings, after Children's Time in the worship service, kids in 1st through 5th grade are invited to Kids 501, a kid-friendly worship experience held in the Joy Outlook room on the second floor. The service touches upon diverse learning styles and includes quiet time, candle lighting, Scripture reading, open discussion journaling, arts and crafts, and short videos. On Communion Sundays, there is no Kids 501 so children can participate in the Communion service with their families.
Vacation Bible School is a five-day program for children ages 3 through rising 6th graders. The 2026 theme is "Snowball Mountain Challenge," drawn from Philippians 4:13, with songs, activities, games, and lessons that remind children that God is with them wherever they go. The children's ministry also offers a music and theater camp where kids explore singing, dancing, acting, and playing musical instruments, ending in a final performance.
Youth Ministry
The youth group meets on Sundays after church for fellowship and spiritual growth, and during the school year they also gather for Wednesday night programming. Meetings include scripture study, games, missions, outings, and other activities. Throughout the year, the youth engage in outreach missions within the Charlotte and Mecklenburg County community, including support for the homeless, food and clothing drives, and assistance to local schools and community centers. During the summer, the group embarks on a week-long mission trip to another community, often involving home repair and collaboration with local organizations.
Music Ministry
The chancel choir meets weekly on Thursday evening at 5:30 pm to rehearse. The group's repertoire ranges from meditative selections to gospel music to praise and worship songs, and there are no auditions to join; the only requirements are a love of Christ, a love of music, and a desire to share talents. The praise team, a group of dedicated musicians and singers, meets on Thursday nights at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary and covers a variety of styles, occasionally joining forces with the chancel choir to bring all voices together. Anyone is welcome to join.
The Director of Music and Worship Arts, Tim Armstrong, has led the music ministry since 2022. He is a lifelong United Methodist "preacher's kid" who has worked with many music leaders and ministers across North Carolina churches.
Room in the Inn and Operation Sandwich
For more than twenty years, Hawthorne Lane has partnered with Roof Above to extend comfort and safety for unhoused neighbors during the coldest months of the year. Every Tuesday night from December until March, the church opens its doors to 14 unhoused neighbors in the Charlotte area, offering a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, a shower and laundry, and other support. The ministry requires a great deal of weekly volunteer work, from setting up space and driving a bus to pick up guests to providing dinner and dessert, staying overnight, doing laundry, and cleaning up. Thanks to these volunteers, the church has welcomed close to 4,000 of its unhoused neighbors over the last two decades.
Through its Operation Sandwich ministry, the church has lovingly made 500 sandwiches each month for the past three years in support of Roof Above Day Services. Roof Above serves 300,000 sandwiches a year to the homeless community at multiple centers, and the church notes that sandwiches from Hawthorne Lane and other Charlotte churches have a vital impact on the mission.
The church also collects food year-round for Nourish Up, the regional food bank, and during Advent and Lent selects various local missions to support. A mission hub connects individuals and small groups with partners including Crisis Assistance Ministry, the Diaper Bank of North Carolina, Project Outpour, and Sanctuary Counseling Group.
Adult Small Groups and Bible Study
The Friendship Sunday School Class is a multigenerational class that meets every Sunday morning at 9:30 am, with nursery care provided. The class deepens understanding of the Bible, theology, and Christian living, and serves as a place to ask questions, seek guidance, and receive support from peers.
Sacred Space is a women's Bible study held every Tuesday evening via Zoom, welcoming women of all ages and backgrounds. The church also offers a weekday Bible study led by the senior pastor.
Sacraments and Life Milestones
Baptism at Hawthorne Lane is described as a symbol of new life and a sign of God's love and forgiveness, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith for infants, children, and adults. As a United Methodist church, baptism is understood as a means of grace and a way of inclusion in the body of Christ.
The church offers premarital counseling and support to couples preparing for marriage, and the sanctuary is available for wedding ceremonies. For funerals, the church offers worship services, prayers, pastoral care, counseling, and support groups for the grieving, with the promise of resurrection drawn from the United Methodist Book of Worship at the center of its care.
Hawthorne Lane Preschool
Hawthorne Lane Preschool is a through-the-week children's ministry of the church, providing a Christian learning environment for preschool children to learn about God's world and God's love. The preschool welcomes children of all (or no) faith traditions, in keeping with the highest Christian principles of respect and welcome.
The school day runs from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, with classes for young toddlers, toddlers, two-year-olds, three-year-olds, four-year-olds, and transitional kindergarten. The preschool follows some Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools major holidays and breaks. Children bring their own lunch and snack from home, and the school is a nut-free zone. The preschool also offers a four-week Summer Fun Camp in July for children ages 1 (as of December 31) through rising kindergarten. Registration for the next school year opens in person in the church parking lot in late January.
Beliefs and Identity
Hawthorne Lane's mission is to follow Jesus, make disciples, and transform the world. The congregation's vision is summarized in three words: worship, grow, serve. The church believes in God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; in Jesus Christ as the one who brings salvation to the whole world; in the Bible as the inspired word of God interpreted through tradition, reason, and experience; and in the Holy Spirit as God's abiding presence.
The church believes in the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion as tangible means by which God's real presence is given. All people are understood to be of sacred worth, created in the image of God, with full inclusion of all persons in the life of the church. As United Methodists, Hawthorne Lane sees itself as part of Christ's universal Church, united with other Christians around the world in the Body of Christ, called to love God and neighbor through personal holiness and social action.
