About Foothills Southern Baptist

From a Living Room on Torrey Pines Drive to Cheyenne Avenue

Foothills Baptist Church sits on the northwest side of Las Vegas at 6405 West Cheyenne Avenue, a single address that carries more than four decades of story. The congregation traces its roots to March 9, 1980, when a small group met for Sunday afternoon worship in a home on North Torrey Pines Drive. Sponsored by Twin Lakes Baptist Church, that group became Torrey Pines Baptist Mission. Within its first year, lay preachers led the gathering and it moved into a storefront at the corner of Jay Avenue and Rancho. When the mission closed in May 1981, the same core of believers reopened as Foothills Southern Baptist Chapel in July 1981, this time under the sponsorship of First Southern Baptist Church.

Steve Davis served as the chapel's bi-vocational pastor until July 1982. Under his leadership, the congregation secured a second storefront to accommodate growth and began negotiating to acquire 3.2 acres at the southwest corner of Cheyenne Avenue and Torrey Pines Drive, the very land Twin Lakes Baptist Church had originally purchased for the mission. Those negotiations wrapped up under Interim Pastor Earl Greene, a member of First Southern Baptist Church. Hoyt Savage, the church's previous pastor, took the pulpit in November 1982.

A Building Raised by Members and Louisiana Volunteers

For years the church continued to pray for a permanent home while meeting in its storefront location. Ground was broken for the Worship Center on June 30, 1985. After multiple delays, construction finally began in January 1986 and was completed through a striking blend of paid and volunteer labor, with church members working alongside volunteer crews from Louisiana churches. The first Sunday worship service on the Cheyenne Avenue campus was held December 7, 1986, and the building was formally dedicated to God's glory in February 1987.

The campus grew again when the classroom and office building, the Multipurpose Building as members call it, was finished in October 1996. On August 20, 1989, Foothills ended its mission-church status and constituted as an autonomous church. Today, Foothills Baptist Church continues to move toward the goal of balanced, healthy church life so it can better reach its community and develop growing, serving Christians, expecting God to enlarge the church's vision, ministry, and fellowship in the years ahead.

Sunday Mornings: Bible Study at Nine, Worship at Ten-Thirty

Sunday at Foothills begins at 9:00 AM with Bible study groups for every age and stage, from preschool through adults. Visitors can enter through the main worship center doors, meet the staff, and then join a small group. At 10:30 AM the congregation gathers for worship, led by a worship leader and the Adult Praise Team.

The service runs about sixty minutes and includes live music and biblical teaching. Dress is casual, so newcomers are simply asked to be themselves. A Welcome Team greets guests and helps them find everything they need to enjoy their Sunday. Services are available online through the church's YouTube channel for those who want to participate from home.

Preschool and Children's Sunday School

Foothills takes seriously the spiritual formation of its youngest members. Preschool ministry serves children from birth through Pre-K, meeting during the 9:00 to 10:00 AM Sunday Bible study hour. The full hour is dedicated to age-appropriate activities designed to engage children with biblical truths and meet them where they are spiritually, physically, emotionally, and socially. During the 10:30 AM worship service, preschool care is available for children from birth through kindergarten.

Children's Sunday School, also 9:00 to 10:00 AM, is framed as more than a Sunday morning class. The church describes it as the foundation for a child's life: a place where the Bible becomes something more than a book carried to church, where children begin to recognize right and wrong by what Scripture teaches, where they learn that prayer is heard, and where they start to love others because God first loved them. The ministry reaches children in the years between learning to read and becoming a teenager.

Students, Young Adults, and Women's Ministries

The Student Ministry exists to help students become fully devoted followers of Jesus, with the conviction that this does not happen around a Bible study once a week. In addition to Sunday morning Bible study at 9:00 AM, students gather on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 PM for a midweek program, and the ministry also includes camps, retreats, and prayer.

The Young Adult Group is a mix of young professionals, college students, and others weighing what comes next. They meet Thursday evenings at about 6:30 PM with a shared meal before Bible study, and again on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM for Sunday School before joining the larger worship service. Their primary focus is studying God's Word together, fellowship, seeing where Christ is at work around them, and carrying what they learn into the community, with time set aside for mutual encouragement and prayer.

Women's Ministries gathers women of many ages and backgrounds around Sunday morning small groups at 9:00 AM and a calendar of connection events, ministry projects, and spiritual growth weekends throughout the year. Friends and guests are always welcome, and the ministry encourages women to plug in whenever and wherever they can.

Worship Ministry and the Arts

The Worship Ministry at Foothills aims to provide an atmosphere that helps people move toward membership, maturity, ministry, mission, and magnification, allowing those with gifts in music, creative worship arts, and technical aspects of ministry to use those gifts to their fullest potential. Opportunities include serving on the Adult Praise Band and Team or in the Audio/Visual Ministry. The church welcomes those interested in serving to contact the office at info@foothillsbaptistchurch.org.

What Foothills Believes

Foothills Baptist Church holds to the historic Baptist Faith and Message. The church confesses that the Holy Bible is God-breathed Scripture, a perfect treasure of divine instruction, totally true and trustworthy, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct and religious opinions should be tried.

There is one true and living God, infinite in holiness and all other perfections, who reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Man, created in God's image, fell into sin through free choice and now stands in need of grace. Salvation is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, encompassing regeneration, justification, sanctification, and final glorification, with no salvation apart from personal faith in Christ. All true believers are kept by the power of God and shall persevere to the end.

A New Testament church is understood as an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers, governed by the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes, with pastors and deacons as scriptural officers. The two ordinances observed are believers' baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper. The church also affirms the sanctity of marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman, the dignity of every human life from conception to natural death, religious liberty, the separation of church and state, and the responsibility of every believer to make disciples of all nations. Giving is presented as a spiritual privilege, with offerings supporting both local ministries and mission partnerships through Southern Baptist organizations such as NAMB, IMB, and the Send Network.
