First Baptist Mustang: A Southern Baptist Congregation on North Mustang Road

Baptist Church in Mustang, Oklahoma

First Baptist Church of Mustang is a Southern Baptist congregation on North Mustang Road in Mustang, Oklahoma, tracing its roots to 1903 and now gathering more than a thousand worshipers each weekend in a 1,000-seat worship center.

About First Baptist Church-Mustang

First Baptist Church of Mustang sits on North Mustang Road in the growing Oklahoma City suburb of Mustang, just across the Canadian County line southwest of the metro. The congregation has worshiped under the name First Baptist for more than a century, and today it draws hundreds of families each weekend into a 1,000-seat worship center that opened in 2006. Beyond Sunday mornings, the church operates one of the most varied ministries in the area, with dedicated tracks for preschoolers, children, students, college-age young adults, men, women, worship musicians, media volunteers, and missionaries in far-flung places.

A Church Built Through Tornadoes

The story of First Baptist Mustang goes back to July 12, 1903, when a group of settlers who had arrived during the Oklahoma land runs formed a Missionary Baptist Church, four years before statehood. For fifteen years the young church had no building of its own. Members met wherever they could - in schoolhouses and in borrowed rooms at the Presbyterian and Methodist churches - holding fast to worship and fellowship on the open prairie.

In 1918 they built their first sanctuary, a half mile south of what is now Highway 152 on Mustang Road. In April 1927 a violent tornado reduced that structure to rubble and scattered most of the church's early records. The papers that survived were later lost in a house fire. The congregation pressed on, holding joint services with the Methodist Church in the school auditorium while both groups rebuilt.

A new chapter began in 1969 when the church purchased land for its current home on Mustang Road. Construction was underway when another tornado struck, yet the building rose, and on November 14, 1971, the congregation gathered once more with renewed resolve. Through the decades, continued growth led to the construction of new buildings, the expansion of ministries, and the opening of the current 1,000-seat worship center in 2006 - perfectly timed for a growing Mustang community.

Worship on Sundays and Wednesdays

Worship at First Baptist Mustang is built around two Sunday morning services, a Sunday evening service, and a full slate of Wednesday night activities. Sunday School classes for every age meet alongside both morning services, so families can choose between the 9:00 a.m. hour and the 10:30 a.m. hour. Sunday evenings begin at 5:00 p.m. with a one-hour service in the Worship Center. A live stream of the 9:00 a.m. service and the Wednesday night Bible study is available for those at home or out of town, and recordings of the Sunday evening sermon and the Wednesday student ministry service are posted afterward.

Wednesdays bring the church back together from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Midweek Bible Study fills the Worship Center with adults working through a verse-by-verse study of Scripture, while Elevate, the student worship gathering, takes over the Youth Center. Children's Wing opens for AWANA. The Adult Worship Choir rehearses in the Choir Room during the school year, and Kinder-Praise and Kids Praise choirs rehearse in their own spaces. Sunday morning praise band members gather at 7:45 a.m. for a run-through of the morning's music.

What to Expect on a First Visit

Guests arriving at 928 N. Mustang Rd. will find directional signage and reserved guest parking around the campus. Anyone looking for the right Sunday School class can stop by the Guest Information Center in the Main Lobby or the South Foyer, where a Welcome Team member will help match them to a class and provide a map.

Children from birth through Pre-K may attend Preschool Sunday School at either morning hour, taught by trained, background-checked adults using the Gospel Project curriculum. Security is taken seriously: a secure child check-in procedure controls access to the Preschool & Children's Building, and background checks are required for every volunteer who works with children or students. Older children may attend Sunday School at one hour and worship with their parents at the other, so families can experience the service together.

For the college-age Crossroads class, members attend the 9:00 a.m. worship service and meet for Sunday School at 10:30 a.m. in the upstairs Crossroads classroom.

Preschool and Children: Birth through Fifth Grade

Preschool ministry at First Baptist Mustang is split between two directors - Bandi David for younger preschoolers and Shelby Howell for older preschoolers - and runs a weekly Parent's Day Out program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for children from birth through Pre-K. Kathy Brotherton oversees the broader children's ministry, which includes Sunday morning classes for kindergarteners through fifth graders at both morning hours.

AWANA is the midweek anchor for the children's wing, meeting Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on the Mustang Public School calendar. The club is open to children from age 3 (by September 1) through fifth grade and uses a Bible-centered curriculum that emphasizes Scripture memory and gospel application, with game time, handbook time, and a monthly mission emphasis. Cubbies is the preschool division, with games, puppets, crafts, and awards designed for three- and four-year-olds.

For fourth and fifth graders who want to go further, Kid's Summit meets on the first Friday of each month during the school year. The club follows an in-depth Bible study curriculum completed privately at home and gathered for discussion, prayer, service, and leadership opportunities at the monthly meetings. Each summer, rising third through fifth graders can attend Cross Timbers, a four-day camp near Davis, Oklahoma, run through the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.

Students: Sixth through Twelfth Grade

The student ministry meets at different times on Sunday and Wednesday, with separate rooms designed to flex with grade level. On Sunday mornings, middle schoolers attend the 9:00 a.m. worship service in the Worship Center and head to Sunday School at 10:30 in the Youth Center, while high schoolers do the reverse - Sunday School at 9:00 and worship at 10:30. Sunday School classes are divided by gender and grade and are led discussion-style through books of the Bible.

Wednesday nights belong to Elevate, the student worship service that begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Youth Center. A student band leads worship, a pastor preaches, and small groups follow for discussion and prayer. Joey Snodgrass serves as Associate Pastor with Students, and Kashaun Barber serves as Director of Student Ministries.

The student ministry runs a leadership track called Lead Teams that meets on Sunday evenings from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Small Group Leaders guide discussion, the Embrace team greeters and tracks attendance, the Worship team runs tech and band, and a Developing Leadership track catches everyone else. Sunday evening discipleship also includes a Bible study for middle and early high school students in the upstairs room above the Youth Cafe. Passion Student Choir meets most weeks at 5:15 p.m. on Sundays for grades 6 through 12, sings for the congregation several times a year, and takes an annual spring break mission trip.

Crossroads: College-Age Young Adults

Crossroads is the church's ministry for college-age young adults between 18 and 24, designed for the moment in life when career, relationships, and faith decisions collide. Members attend the 9:00 a.m. worship service together and gather at 10:30 a.m. for Sunday School in the upstairs Crossroads room, which serves as the primary Bible teaching time during the fall and spring semesters. Once a month, on the first Sunday evening, Crossroads hosts S.N.A.C. - Sunday Night After Church - a casual fellowship at a rotating location for food and games. Jeremy Davis oversees the ministry.

Men, Women, and Adult Discipleship

The adult ministry is built around Midweek Bible Study on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Worship Center, where Jeff LeDuc leads a verse-by-verse walk through Scripture that doubles as a church-wide prayer gathering. The service is livestreamed.

Men's ministry gathers for a regular breakfast, a Night of Worship, an annual Men's Conference, and small-group D-Groups for accountability and Bible study. The 2026 Men's Conference will be held at the church with Dr. Jim Hamilton, Professor of Old Testament Interpretation and Biblical Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, preaching on the theme "Redeeming Our Time."

Women's ministry centers on a Bible study that meets Thursday evenings for six weeks at a time. The study uses either the Precept Upon Precept or In & Out workbook from Precept Ministries International and is taught by Chelsea Davis. Other gatherings include the Moms Group, Ladies Night of Theology, Night of Worship, a Christmas fellowship, and a women's conference. D-Groups are also available for women.

Music and Worship Ministry

The worship ministry at First Baptist Mustang blends a full choir and orchestra with a contemporary praise band, drawing on both the great hymns of the faith and newer worship songs. Adult Worship Choir rehearses on Wednesdays during the school year from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., with summer hours shortened to 6:30 to 7:30. The praise band meets Sunday mornings at 7:45 a.m. before services. John Brewer, Associate Pastor of Worship, leads the ministry, with John (JR) Ausmus coordinating the IMAG screens, camera operation, and live stream production from the tech booth.

Children's choirs include Kinder-Praise for pre-K and kindergarteners and Kids Praise for first through fifth graders, with singing, movement, games, and short devotions. Passion Student Choir rounds out the lineup for grades 6 through 12.

Media and Live Stream

The media ministry handles audio, video, lighting, IMAG screens, and live stream production for both the 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. services and special events such as Christmas Around the Tree, Easter Sunrise, Vacation Bible School, and conferences. The team rehearses Sunday mornings at 7:45 a.m., with front-of-house operators at both services and studio operators at the 9:00 a.m. service. A student media track within the Elevate Lead Teams feeds younger volunteers into the main rotation.

Missions

First Baptist Mustang frames its missions vision around Acts 1:8, beginning at home and reaching to the ends of the earth. The church supports a number of missionaries abroad and invites members to pray for their spiritual health, marriages, children, team unity, and logistics - from visa renewals and language learning to political stability in the country where they serve. Members are encouraged to pray not only for missionaries but also for God to raise up new workers from the universal church, from First Baptist Mustang, and from their own families.

REACT Team: Disaster Response Volunteers

REACT is a volunteer group prepared to respond in the aftermath of tornadoes, fires, and ice storms, both inside the church and across the Mustang community. Volunteers supply their own tools and tackle small cleanup and repair projects. The team is coordinated by Craig Dill.

Biblical Counseling

The biblical counseling ministry exists to help people look to Jesus Christ in the midst of sin, sickness, or suffering. Counselors are affiliated with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC), and the staff includes both certified counselors and those in process of certification. Counseling is open to anyone in the church or community who completes the Personal Data Inventory and Consent to Counsel forms. Executive Pastor Jeff LeDuc oversees the ministry, with Jason Nelson, Louise Glenn, and Lacy Pregler on the counseling team.

The Institute: A Two-Year Men's Training Program

The Institute is a two-year men's training program covering Bible knowledge, ministry, godly character, and theology across eight courses. Open to men from any church, the current cycle runs from May 2026 to April 2028, with enrollment open each year. Tuition and forms are available through the church office or the Ministry Connection. Classes meet under the leadership of Senior Pastor Michael Staton.

What the Church Believes

First Baptist Mustang holds to a doctrinal statement organized around the doctrines most Baptist churches affirm: the Bible as the inspired, error-free Word of God; one God in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the full deity and humanity of Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, sinless, crucified, raised, ascended, and returning; the total sinfulness of humanity and salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone; the universal church and the local church; baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper as the two ordinances; and the personal, visible return of Christ.

The church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, and the Capital Baptist Association. It practices cooperative church governance and supports both local and international missions.

Leadership

The pastoral staff is led by Senior Pastor Michael Staton, who has served the church since 2000 and holds a Doctor of Ministry in Expository Preaching from The Master's Seminary. Jeff LeDuc has served as Executive Pastor since 2012 and is a certified biblical counselor. John Brewer, Associate Pastor of Worship, joined the staff in 2010. Jeremy Davis, a Mustang native and former member of the church, returned in 2022 as Associate Pastor. Joey Snodgrass, who came on staff in 2018, leads the student ministry. Kathy Brotherton has directed children's ministry since 2000, with Bandi David and Shelby Howell directing the younger and older preschool programs and Kashaun Barber serving as Director of Student Ministries.
