First Baptist Church Bridge City sits on the west side of Roundbunch Road in the Orange County community of Bridge City, Texas, and locals know it simply as FBCBC. The church's motto is "Love God. Love People." from Matthew 22:37-40, with a second phrase, "Renew and Revive," running alongside it. The congregation traces its roots to a meeting of twenty-eight people at Prairie View School on July 11, 1940, and the same mission that began in a wood-frame sanctuary still shapes the work of the church more than eighty years later.
From Prairie View School to Roundbunch Road
The fellowship that became FBCBC formed on July 11, 1940, when twenty-eight people met at Prairie View School in the Prairie View Community (now Bridge City). After singing the hymn "Oh Happy Day" and shaking hands with one another, the meeting was adjourned. The small group soon acquired land and built its first meeting place, a wood-frame sanctuary.
Construction of the present brick sanctuary began in 1949 and the building was dedicated in 1953. A children's wing was added in 1957, followed by parking lots, an activities building (now the Family Life Center) in 1963, and an educational building in 1979. FBCBC marked its 85th anniversary with a commemorative video that walked through the church's current and historical scenes. The church has been a mission-minded congregation from its founding: it planted two missions that grew into other churches in Bridge City, and it has been continuously active in local, state, and foreign missions ever since.
Coming Through Storms Together
Bridge City sits in a stretch of Southeast Texas that knows hurricanes. In 2008, Hurricane Ike pushed floodwaters through Bridge City and into the church building itself. Members repaired their own homes and then turned to repair the church, while FBCBC provided housing and meals for relief groups assisting the wider recovery. Nine years later, in 2017, when Hurricane Harvey flooded much of Orange County, FBCBC opened the Family Life Center to house flood victims and to feed those in need, and members distributed groceries, clothing, and supplies. The church's stated mission is to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the Bridge City and Orangefield community, and that pattern of showing up after the storm is one of the clearest examples of how FBCBC lives it out.
Sunday at FBCBC
Visitors are welcomed by a friendly greeter at the main entrance and can expect a multi-generational worship service with a sermon drawn straight from God's Word. The Sunday rhythm is built around two gatherings. Sunday School meets at 9:15 AM for every age from nursery through senior adults. Worship begins at 10:30 AM and includes congregational singing under the direction of Music Director Billy Pruitt, a sermon from Pastor Keith Royal, and an invitation to respond. During the sermon, Children's Church is offered for ages four through second grade, so parents can stay engaged in the auditorium while younger children have their own time of teaching. Services are livestreamed on Facebook Live for those who cannot attend in person, and recorded sermons and sermon notes are posted afterward for catch-up listening. Recent sermon series have walked through 2 Timothy and 2 Thessalonians and have included a four-part study called "Who Is Jesus?" with messages on Acts, Ephesians, 2 Corinthians, Matthew, and the Psalms.
Sunday School for Every Stage of Life
Sunday School is the church's core program for learning to follow Jesus, and the classes run the full span of life. Nursery care is available from birth through age two during the entire morning, from 9:15 to 11:30 AM, under the direction of Nursery Coordinator Thelma Wheelis. Three-year-olds through sixth graders meet in graded classes at 9:15 AM, taught by volunteers who have all passed background screenings and completed Ministry Safe Child Safety System training. Junior high and senior high students gather in the Youth Sunday School taught by Youth Minister Cody Dowden and his wife Sarah.
Adults are spread across eight adult classes, with several designed for particular life stages but all open to singles, couples, and any adult who wants to join. Adult 1A leans toward College and Career, Adult 1B (taught by Cheryl Royal) toward twenties through forties, and Adult 2 (taught by Eric Cole) toward thirties and forties. Adult 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 round out the list, with Adult 6 and Adult 7 geared toward Senior Adults. Each class has its own intercessory prayer chain.
Wednesday Evenings in the Building
Wednesday evening is the second main gathering of the week. At 5:00 PM, the Women's Wednesday Bible Study meets under the leadership of Brenda Woodall. At 6:30 PM, the church building fills again with four things happening at once: Bible Study and Prayer Meeting for adults, Youth Bible Study led by Cody Dowden, Mission Kids for third through sixth graders, and Children's Choir for four-year-olds through second grade. It is the one night of the week when the building belongs to every generation at once.
Prayer That Starts the Week
Prayer is woven through the church's schedule. On Monday mornings, the Men's Priority Prayer group gathers at 5:30 AM in the church office for an hour of intercession. Later the same morning, at 10:00 AM, the Ladies Prayer Group meets in the Prayer Room and continues until 11:15 AM. On the second Sunday evening of each month, the whole church gathers for a Churchwide Prayer Meeting at 5:30 PM.
Music and Worship
The music ministry at FBCBC is led by Billy Pruitt, who came on as Music Director in 2024. A believer in Jesus Christ for more than fifty-four years, Billy was called by God to music ministry over fifty years ago. He and his wife Pam, married for more than fifty years, work as a team each week preparing a service they aim to keep God-led and honoring to Jesus Christ. The Worship Ministry includes the Worship Choir, a band, and an Audio/Visual team. Sermons often draw on passages like Psalm 100, calling the congregation to joyful worship rooted in who God is and what He has done. As Pastor Keith Royal has reminded the church from Psalm 100: "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord... serve the Lord with gladness." Worship at FBCBC is a response to grace, not an empty obligation.
Children and Students
The Children's Ministry gathers kids from birth through sixth grade across graded Sunday School classes, Children's Church during the sermon, Children's Choir on Wednesdays, Mission Kids on Wednesdays, Vacation Bible School, and Children's Camps at various points through the year. Children's Sunday School is taught by volunteers who all have background screens and Ministry Safe training.
The Youth Ministry, led by Cody Dowden and his wife Sara, includes Junior High and Senior High Sunday School, Wednesday Night Discipleship Training, summer Youth Camps, and a full calendar of activities for students in grades seven through twelfth. Sara and Cody, who began serving at FBCBC in 2026, both hold to a simple vision: lead students to know Christ personally, grow in their faith deeply, and boldly share the gospel in their everyday lives. The Dowdens want the youth ministry to be a place where students encounter God through His Word, build authentic relationships, and develop a faith that is both rooted and active.
Golden Harvest and the Years After
The Senior Adult Ministry at FBCBC is called the Golden Harvest Club. The Golden Harvesters meet monthly for a luncheon with entertainment, and they gather periodically for a game night. Members come and go as they are able, and the luncheons are open to anyone in this season of life who wants to join the table.
Serving Bridge City and Beyond
Outreach is built into how FBCBC understands its calling. The church responds to special needs in the local area through storm relief, supplying the local food bank, serving in an area soup kitchen, and meeting specific needs of individuals and area churches. Beyond Bridge City, FBCBC supports the cooperative work of Southern Baptists through three mission offerings each year: the Reach Texas Missions Offering for state missions through the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (FBCBC's 2026 giving goal was $3,500), the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American missions (one hundred percent of gifts given support more than 3,000 missionary families across the United States and Canada), and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international missions through the International Mission Board.
The Pumpkin Patch Annual Ministry
One of FBCBC's most visible annual ministries is its Pumpkin Patch, which opens each fall on the church grounds in late September. The patch serves both as a community gathering place for Bridge City and as a fundraiser for the church's missions and outreach, and the church schedules a Pumpkin Unload day each September to set up the season.
What FBCBC Believes
The Holy Bible is the authority in matters of faith and practice at FBCBC. The church holds its beliefs in essential agreement with the Baptist Faith and Message adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention on June 14, 2000, with one article (Article VI, "The Church") amended by the 2023 Convention.
The eighteen articles cover the Scriptures, God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), man, salvation, God's purpose of grace, the church, baptism and the Lord's Supper, the Lord's Day, the Kingdom, last things, evangelism and missions, education, stewardship, cooperation, the Christian and the social order, peace and war, religious liberty, and the family.
The Bible is "a perfect treasure of divine instruction," written by men divinely inspired, totally true and trustworthy, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. God is one living and true God who reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, crucified and raised, now exalted at the right hand of God as the one Mediator between God and man, who will return in power and glory to judge the world.
Baptism is understood as the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and is a prerequisite for church membership and participation in the Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience in which church members memorialize the death of the Redeemer and look forward to His second coming. Salvation is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and there is no salvation apart from personal faith in Him. The church affirms the eternal security of the believer: those whom God has accepted in Christ and sanctified by His Spirit will never fall away from the state of grace, but shall persevere to the end.
On marriage and family, the church holds to the biblical conviction that marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime, that children are a blessing and heritage from the Lord from the moment of conception, and that parents are to teach their children spiritual and moral values by word and example. The church also affirms religious liberty, the separation of church and state, and the right of free and unhindered access to God on the part of all people.
The Pastoral Team
Pastor Keith Royal accepted Christ as Lord and Savior at age 25 and surrendered to preach God's Word soon afterward, beginning his pastoral ministry while a student at Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth. He retired from pastoral ministry in 2016 after more than twenty years of service, came out of retirement in 2019 to serve as Interim Pastor at FBCBC, and later that same year accepted God's call to serve as full-time pastor. Keith and his wife Cheryl have been married since 1990 and have three adult children. His goal in preaching is to communicate the truths of God's Word in a clear, understandable way and with the convicting power of God's Holy Spirit. Keith has a heart for missions and has participated in mission efforts around the world.
Cody Dowden, the Youth Minister, came to faith in Jesus Christ in 1993 and accepted God's call into ministry in 2005. He holds a Master of Theological Studies from Liberty University. He and Sara began serving at FBCBC in 2026.
Billy Pruitt has served as Music Director since 2024, with Pam serving alongside him. Together they have spent more than fifty years in ministry as a couple.
