A Mission Church on Plantation Drive Since 1951
Christ Lutheran Church has been part of Lake Jackson, Texas for seventy-five years. The congregation traces its roots to April 1951, when Paul Anderson, a new resident of the recently incorporated city, gathered fifty-eight people and petitioned the Augustana Lutheran Church to start a mission. Reverend Douglas Pearson conducted the first service on April 1, 1951, in the cafeteria of Lake Jackson Junior High, preaching from a portable pulpit donated by a Galveston congregation. Three years later, on October 24, 1954, the first church building was dedicated at 86 Plantation Drive, and the congregation has gathered on that four-acre site ever since.
Over the decades the affiliation changed as Lutheran bodies merged. Christ Lutheran moved from the Augustana Lutheran Church to the Lutheran Church in America, and then to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), where it remains today. The church celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2026.
The Pumpkin Patch Church
Anyone in the Brazosport area who hears the name Christ Lutheran is likely to think first of pumpkins. In 1997, two high school youth leaders, Christi Matteck and Lorin Furlow, helped plant the congregation's first Pumpkin Patch as a way to support a trip to the ELCA National Youth Gathering. The idea took root in a way no one expected. What began as a partial truckload of pumpkins on pallets has grown into a full truckload of pumpkins and gourds, and the Pumpkin Patch has become the signature community event of the church.
Today the Pumpkin Patch draws families from across the area for Story Time, games, and photo opportunities. Teenagers and adults pitch in to unload, sell, and clean up. Proceeds from pumpkin and snack sales are given to nonprofit organizations serving schools, shelters, and aid efforts such as the Society of St. Stephen. Christ Lutheran is known throughout the Brazosport region simply as the Pumpkin Patch Church.
Sunday Morning at 86 Plantation Drive
Worship is at the center of life at Christ Lutheran. The congregation gathers at 10:00 AM each Sunday in a sanctuary that grew out of the original 1954 building, expanded in 1972 with a new sanctuary and pipe organ, and equipped in the 2000s with a projection system and improved sound. Services follow a traditional Lutheran liturgy: prayers for the world and for one another, scripture readings, hymns, the Apostles' or Nicene Creed, a sermon, and Holy Communion.
Communion at Christ Lutheran is an open table. Visitors are welcome to receive the sacrament regardless of age, church membership, or background, and a choice of wine or grape juice is offered. Those who prefer to receive a blessing approach the altar with arms folded over the heart.
Adults gather for Sunday School at 9:00 AM in the narthex. Classes range across books of the Bible, ELCA social statements, and Christian living resources. Confirmation classes meet for youth in roughly grades six through eight, offering deeper instruction in Lutheran faith, life, and prayer. New member classes are offered periodically for anyone interested in joining the congregation.
Printed bulletins are available in regular or large print, with the same information projected on a screen in the sanctuary. Children are encouraged to stay in worship: younger children may help collect the offering and bring it to the pastor, while older youth serve as acolytes, scripture readers, projection assistants, or ushers. Puzzle sheets, crayons, and coloring books are available in the narthex, and a nursery with a changing table and preschool toys is open at the right-hand end of the gathering area. There is no nursery attendant on staff.

What to Wear, Where to Park, and What Happens Afterward
The congregation's welcome page is direct about its expectations: come as you are. On any given Sunday, dress runs from shorts and sports jerseys to suits. There is no reserved parking; people may park anywhere on the lot. A driveway loop from the parking lot offers closer access for anyone needing extra assistance getting into the building.
After worship, the gathering area becomes the social center of the morning. Coffee is set out for adults, with juice boxes for children, along with a snack and information about current projects and volunteer opportunities. A photo wall of members helps newcomers put names with faces. The bulletin board is decorated by an art corner that changes with the church season.
Camp Hope: Teens Teaching Kids
Each summer since 2001, Christ Lutheran has run Camp Hope, a multi-week day camp for elementary-aged children. The structure is unusual: teen counselors lead the program, mentored by adults from the congregation. Counselors receive a small wage and spend weeks preparing Bible stories, crafts, and music for each day's curriculum. Middle school youth serve as volunteer support staff and are trained on the job for the day they will lead. For working parents in the Brazosport area, Camp Hope offers an affordable, faith-based option during the summer break. For the teenagers who run it, Camp Hope builds confidence, biblical knowledge, and visible Christian leadership.
Society of St. Stephen and the Food Pantry
Christ Lutheran partners with two other area congregations in the Society of St. Stephen, an outreach that takes calls from neighbors who need help paying rent or keeping the lights on. Even in a relatively prosperous region, the need is real, and the partnership allows the three churches to respond together.
The congregation also keeps a grocery cart in the gathering area that is regularly filled and delivered to the Brazosport Cares Food Pantry. Several members volunteer at the pantry directly. The annual Souper Bowl of Caring in January raises additional funds for Brazosport Cares, and a March Madness bracket pool raises money for a different charity each year.
Across Town and Around the World
Christ Lutheran's mission footprint stretches well beyond Lake Jackson. Every August the congregation hosts a community-wide Rummage Sale to raise funds for global missions, including support for missionaries Lancelot Themba and Kewena Rebecca in Madagascar. In 2012 a group from the church traveled to Guatemala, visiting Iglesia Luterana Agustin de Guatemala, preparing activities for a church-supported school, and delivering a donated solar panel to a remote congregation pastored by Pastor Castillo. Local partners include the Brazoria County SPCA, the Pregnancy Help Center, and Brazosport area schools.
Beliefs and the Sacraments
Christ Lutheran teaches that God created the universe and made humans in God's own image. The congregation confesses that God became human in Jesus Christ, and that through his life, death, and resurrection, God took on the sin and suffering of the world. Salvation is by grace alone: there is no special prayer to pray, no state of mind to achieve, and no good deed to perform that adds to what Christ has already done. Faith is the confident hope in that grace, which sets believers free to love and serve their neighbors.
The congregation recites the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed in worship and celebrates two sacraments. Holy Baptism is offered to infants, children, teens, and adults and is understood as God's action rather than a human decision. It offers five gifts: forgiveness of original sin, the naming and claiming of each person as a child of God, membership in the body of Christ, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the gift of eternal life. Confirmation, now often called Affirmation of Baptism, is the moment when young people declare for themselves the promises made for them at baptism. Marriage is celebrated as a central call to faithfulness, with couples encouraged to speak with the pastor nine to eighteen months before an anticipated wedding date.
Seventy-Five Years on Plantation Drive
Christ Lutheran has watched Lake Jackson grow around it. The congregation was meeting in a junior high cafeteria when the city itself was new, and it has stayed at 86 Plantation Drive through the addition of a sanctuary in 1972, a renovated parish hall in 1985, and the Life in Christ Center, which the church paid off in November 2021. In the 1950s, members of Boy Scout Troop 311 helped at groundbreaking ceremonies and cleaned up after hurricanes; the troop remained part of the church until 2023, when its final scouts held their Eagle Court of Honor in the sanctuary. The 1960s brought a woman onto the board of trustees for the first time. The 1970s added the Chrismon ornaments that still hang on the sanctuary Christmas tree, the outdoor barbecue pavilion, and the youth folk group Forever Family. The 1980s brought a husband-and-wife pastoral team, Reverends David Henske and Jennie Jones, the congregation's first woman pastor, and Jazz Sundays that spread to other area churches. Pastor Paul Geisler served for seventeen years beginning in 2005 and led the congregation through technological upgrades and the building of the Life in Christ Center.
After Pastor Geisler's retirement in September 2022, Reverend Brian Gigee arrived as interim pastor, and a call committee began the search for the next settled pastor. The congregation has also called Jaime Morales, who serves as a lay minister while he attends seminary to become a Lutheran pastor.
Joining the Life of the Congregation
Beyond Sunday worship, Christ Lutheran offers a full weekly rhythm. Bread for Life Bible Study meets Wednesdays at 11:00 AM. Boredom Busters, a midday gathering built around games and conversation, meets Tuesdays at 12:30 PM. A book club gathers on the third Wednesday of each month to discuss books of all kinds. A Home Group meets on the last Sunday of each month at the home of the Rayburns for a meal, prayer, and study open to members of the community. Stewardship work days keep the buildings and grounds in shape, and the men of the church still fire up the barbecue pit for an annual dinner that has been part of congregational life for fifty years.
The church office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Giving is available online, and bulletins, monthly newsletters, sermons, and a digital brochure are all posted for anyone who wants to follow along from home.
