A Church on South Boulder Road

Boulder Valley Christian Church sits on a stretch of South Boulder Road between Boulder and Louisville, just south of the road and marked by a blue sign. The church has been part of the Boulder County landscape since 1961, when a group of Christians planted it in a space just off Pearl Street, and it has called the present property home since 1993. Today it gathers every Sunday morning at ten for a single, family-friendly service and spends the rest of the week building the kind of relationships its leaders say the Sunday hour cannot produce on its own.

The church describes itself as nondenominational and independent, meaning no governing body sits above it and every dollar given stays within its own ministries and mission partners. Its mission is short and worth quoting in its own words: to build authentic relationships with God and one another. Everything from children's check-in to the Wednesday night discipleship curriculum points back to that sentence.

What a Sunday Morning Looks Like

Visitors who show up at ten o'clock can expect about seventy-five minutes of worship and teaching. Attire is casual, and the church explicitly says anything from flip-flops to a suit is fine. Music is contemporary, usually three or four worship songs, and the congregation is invited to expect that the Holy Spirit will move. Teaching is Bible-based and aimed at everyday life.

Communion is served every week. Individually packaged elements sit in the lobby before the service, and any follower of Jesus is welcome to participate. An offering is collected, though guests are not put on the spot. The service is livestreamed on the home page starting at ten, so anyone who can't make the drive can still gather with the church from home.

Children are not an afterthought. Nursery through fifth grade heads to BV Kids during the service after families check in at a ticket booth just inside the front doors, where each child receives a sticker with a security code and matching parent tag. Middle school students meet in the Roots room every other Sunday during the same hour, beginning with the rest of the church before heading to their own space.

Three Values That Shape the Place

The church runs on three values that are repeated so often they begin to feel like muscle memory: commit to community, choose to contribute, and connect to God. They aren't bumper stickers; they show up in how staff are hired, how budgets are built, and how the church talks about itself.

Commit to community means transformation happens best in circles, not in rows. Boulder Valley wants people showing up for the big and small events of one another's lives, laughing and mourning together, pursuing God together. Choose to contribute counters a consumer mindset. Members are expected to give their time and resources inside or outside the church's structures as a primary way of becoming more like Jesus. Connect to God is the bottom line: without it the rest is just a social club. The church teaches that an intentional life with God reshapes how followers respond to joy and sorrow alike, rooting identity in King Jesus.

BV Kids, Nursery Through Fifth Grade

BV Kids is led by Kids Ministry Director Jessica Christofferson and runs every Sunday during the 10:00 service. Each week kids move through a Jesus and Me session, join in age-appropriate worship, play games that build friendships, and spend time with caring leaders. The ministry describes its goal as giving children a place where they can be who God created them to be.

First-time families are walked through the front doors to the ticket booth, where they receive their matching security tags. The ministry has its own social channels for parents wanting a closer look, including the BV Kids Instagram accounts. Volunteer applications are open for anyone who wants to serve on the BV Kids team.

Roots Students, Middle and High School

Roots is the student ministry, directed by Becca Stender, and is intentionally low-pressure and no-judgment. It exists for middle and high schoolers with the aim of instilling a lifelong faith. The name comes from a prayer in Ephesians that the students would be rooted and established in love and come to grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is.

The two age groups run on different rhythms. Middle school meets every other Sunday morning during the service from 10:00 to 11:15. High school meets on Monday nights from 7:30 to 9:00, alternating between Roots Events and Life Groups. Mentoring relationships are built into the weekly programming so students know they are known, seen, and loved exactly as they are. The ministry runs an annual winter camp at Crooked Creek Ranch in Fraser, with a middle school retreat and a high school work crew serving alongside it.

Cana Young Adults

The young adults ministry takes its name from the wedding at Cana, where Jesus turned water into wine. The church sees it as a story of transformation, joy, and community - three things young adults need as they step into adult life. The logo weaves together a water drop and a wine glass inside a circle to capture that vision.

Cana meets on Thursday nights, alternating between Life Groups and Hang nights of hikes, game nights, and other low-risk gatherings where newcomers can form friendships. It is led by a rotating team of young adult leaders under Tyler Glasgow, the Worship Arts Pastor. The ministry is open to college students and young professionals looking for connection, purpose, and real faith.

Life Groups, Where Discipleship Happens

If Sundays are the front door, Life Groups are the living room. The church teaches that discipleship happens in circles, not in rows, and encourages everyone who attends to find a small group where authentic relationships can form.

The current lineup spans most of the week and most of the county. Intergenerational groups meet in Louisville on Wednesdays, in Westminster and Lafayette on alternating Thursdays, in North Boulder on the first and third Tuesdays, and in Lafayette on Monday nights. Young professionals gather in various homes on Tuesdays. A twice-a-month Sunday afternoon group for families with young children meets in Lafayette. Singles over fifty gather in Boulder for a potluck on the second Saturday of each month. Two groups for adults over sixty meet on Tuesdays in Louisville and Erie. Two men's groups meet at the church building on Wednesday mornings and Saturdays, and an intergenerational women's meetup called GatherHer gathers in the Roots room on the third Thursday of each month. A student Life Group is also open for middle and high schoolers.

Anyone interested in joining fills out a LifeGroup form and a staff member follows up personally to help match them to a group that fits.

Men's and Women's Ministries

The men's and women's ministries exist to help people take a next step into authentic friendships and deeper connection, since Sundays are not always the easiest place to truly know people. Each ministry hosts a few connection events throughout the year - brewery nights, Christmas parties, and other easy-entry gatherings - and a yearly retreat. The retreats are framed as a chance to step away from normal rhythms, focus more intentionally on God, and accelerate the kind of shared experience that deepens community quickly.

Men's and women's groups are also listed among the Life Groups on Wednesday mornings, Saturdays, and one Thursday morning a month, giving people an easy on-ramp for regular connection.

Launch, Alpha, and Ultimate Journey

Boulder Valley runs three structured pathways that walk newcomers and long-time members alike toward deeper discipleship.

Launch is a two-week discovery experience offered three times a year, led by Boulder Valley staff. Over two consecutive weeks participants share a meal, get to know each other, explore their spiritual gifts, and walk through the church's history, mission, and vision. Lunch and childcare are provided. The point is to help each person take a clear next step in becoming more like Jesus.

Alpha runs weekly from September through November, twelve weeks of conversation about faith, life, and God. It is designed for anyone with questions. Dinner is provided, though childcare is not. It is led by various facilitators, with sign-ups routed through Lead Pastor Matt Carlson.

Ultimate Journey is a six-month discipleship track that meets Wednesday nights from September through April, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The curriculum weaves together spiritual and emotional maturity, with an emphasis on trusting God in day-to-day life, living in God's peace, and walking through deep spiritual and emotional healing. Various facilitators lead the group.

Forty Days of Prayer and Fasting

Each fall the church sets aside forty days to intentionally seek God together through prayer and fasting. The season is framed around becoming a people of His presence, and the whole church fasts and prays around the same themes at the same time. A daily devotional arrives Monday through Saturday, weekly prayer gatherings create a shared rhythm, and the season closes with a 24-hour finale of continuous prayer in one-hour shifts. The series on prayer anchors each Sunday morning along the way. Sign-ups run through the Church Center app.

Outreach Partners

Boulder Valley supports three long-standing outreach partners. YWAM Ships uses ships to deliver medical care, education, and the Gospel to remote communities across the Pacific and beyond. The Hope Collective is a counseling center in Lafayette providing professional support and healing services for individuals and families. El Pozo de Vida combats human trafficking in Mexico and Central America by offering prevention, intervention, and restoration services to survivors. The church has also established an annual commitment to set aside ten percent of its budget for missions through its 2 for 2 generosity initiative.

What the Church Believes

Boulder Valley keeps its statement of faith short and clear. The church believes that there is one God in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - that the Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God, that Jesus is God's Son sent to redeem humanity from their sin, that the Holy Spirit enables believers to live a godly life, that all believers are united for the advancement of God's purposes, and that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

A Brief History

The story begins in 1961 when a group of Christians wanted a strong presence in Boulder and planted Boulder Valley Christian Church, with the first service held in a space just off Pearl Street. The church continued to grow, and in 1986 the decision was made to sell the building and find a larger space. The current building on South Boulder Road was constructed in 1993, opening a season of fruitful ministry in which the congregation grew in both depth and breadth. In 2020 the church cast a new vision for its third thirty-year phase, anchored by the phrase until everyone belongs. In 2021 the church paid off its mortgage, established The Hope Collective, and created the GO Funds for crisis response, marking the start of its current season.

Leadership

Lead Pastor Matt Carlson has been on staff with Boulder Valley since 2004 and has served as lead pastor since 2013. He grew up in Louisville and now lives in Lafayette with his wife and three kids. Executive Pastor Tyler Adams and Worship Arts Pastor Tyler Glasgow round out the executive team. Becca Stender directs Student Ministries, and Jessica Christofferson directs BV Kids. The church is governed by a Church Leadership Council that includes Matt Carlson along with council members Rachel Cutillo, Bill Stark, Carla King, and Mark Thompson. The council protects the church's mission and biblical purposes, oversees the Lead Pastor, and approves the annual budget before it is presented to the members at the annual business meeting.

Getting Connected and Giving

Visitors can plan a visit through a form on the church's site, fill out a Newcomers Card to have a pastor follow up, or simply show up on a Sunday morning. Office hours run Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; the office is closed on Fridays. Giving is set up online through Church Center, with recurring and one-time options, and donations are also accepted through Venmo (@BLDRVLLY) and Zelle for business accounts.
