For the Bay, Since the Mid-1970s
Tucked into the northeast corner of Fremont, California, just beside the trails and lakes of Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area, Bay Area Baptist Church has been gathering a family of believers under one banner for half a century. The building sits about three-quarters of a mile northwest of the Fremont BART station and two miles east of the I-880/Thornton Avenue exit, an easy hop from anywhere in the southern Bay. The church has chosen a simple motto for itself: "For the Bay," and a single mission that reads like a heartbeat: "We strive to LEAD people to a relationship with Jesus and LOVE people through the church while we LIVE the life of devoted disciples." Everything from the Sunday schedule to the children's check-in is shaped by that statement.
Worship in Song and Teaching
Sundays at Bay Area Baptist are built around two clear anchors: an open invitation to the entire congregation at 10:30 a.m., and an unhurried time of singing and Bible teaching. Worship includes a fresh blend of newer songs and the timeless hymns the wider church has sung for generations, and the messages are Bible-based, practical, and aimed at wherever listeners happen to be in life. Services are livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook for those joining from home, and recorded sermons are available afterward through the church app and media library.
The dress code is famously easygoing. On any given Sunday you might see shorts and flip-flops sitting next to a tie and jacket, because the only standard is comfort. A Connection Breakfast for everyone is offered at 10:00 a.m., giving first-time guests a low-pressure way to walk in, grab a bite, and meet a few friendly faces before the service begins.
Bay Area Kids, from Crib to Sixth Grade
Children are not an afterthought at Bay Area Baptist; they are a full partner in the church's mission. The Bay Area Kids ministry describes its calling as partnering with parents to help children know and love Jesus, and it spans three age groups:
- Nursery (newborn to 23 months) - Open during every service, staffed by trained, screened teachers and assistants in what the church describes as the warmest, cleanest, and best-staffed nursery space in the area. Parents are encouraged to rest and engage with worship while their littlest ones are cared for.
- Preschool (2 to 3 years) - Bible songs, stories, simple verses, and take-home crafts introduce little ones to obedience, kindness, sharing, and most of all to who Jesus is.
- Elementary (4 years through 6th grade) - Sunday school classes are divided by age and gender, with crafts, games, and Bible lessons tailored to each stage.
All teachers and assistants are interviewed, screened, and trained, and online registration is available so families can secure their child's spot before arriving.
Elevate: Teens with a Purpose
Students in grades 7 through 12 have a ministry of their own called Elevate, led by Youth Leader Stephen Bui. Elevate meets during the regular Sunday morning service for an engaging Bible class and gathers once a month for activities designed to build a teen-sized community of faith. The year is rounded out with annual camps, frequent trips, retreats, and the kind of "crazy activities" that turn classmates into lasting friends. The Elevate team is explicit about its aim: to challenge and equip young people to live for Christ during their teen years, not after.
Wednesday Nights in Connection Groups
The week doesn't end on Sunday. Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. are reserved for Connection Groups - adult small groups that meet in homes and on campus to study Scripture, pray, and simply do life together. Nursery care for newborns through 2 years and Bay Area Kids programming for ages 4 through 6th grade run alongside the adult groups, so the whole family can participate. Connection Groups are the main on-ramp for newcomers who want to go deeper than a Sunday visit but aren't quite ready for a committee or a class.
Eight Core Values
Bay Area Baptist names its convictions clearly, listing eight core values rather than leaving them to inference:
- The Bible is the guide, standard, and authority for everything the church does.
- The local church is the hope of the world, not a cul-de-sac but a through street for impacting the world for Christ.
- The church will not be passive; it will go, send, and give so that the lost can be found.
- No small thinking or safe living; nothing is off the table in service to God.
- Excellence in every area of ministry expresses the importance placed on God and His work.
- The church works to be a welcoming, loving, and inviting place for all walks of life.
- Members are managers of the resources God provides, holding nothing back in time, energy, and finances.
- Life is not meant to be lived alone; the church creates opportunities for deep, authentic relationships.
A Bible-Believing Baptist Identity
The church openly calls itself a Bible-believing Baptist and explains the label in its statement of faith. Key doctrines include the verbal, inerrant inspiration of Scripture; the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the full deity and sinless humanity of Jesus Christ, born of a virgin; the substitutionary death and bodily resurrection of Jesus as the only payment for sin; and the personal, premillennial return of Christ for His church, followed by a tribulation, a thousand-year reign, and final judgment. Two ordinances anchor church life: water baptism by immersion as the public profession of faith, and the regular gathering of believers for edification, encouragement, and evangelism.
Grace Bomb: A Movement, Not a Program
In January of the most recent year, Bay Area Baptist launched Grace Bomb, both as a sermon series and as a church-wide ministry. The phrase comes straight out of Ephesians 2:8-10: people who have been saved by grace are "grace-built people" who, in turn, are called to "grace-bomb" the people around them. Grace Bomb frames the church's outward-facing work - outreach, service projects, and everyday generosity - as the natural overflow of what Christ has already done. Practical training in how to "lavish grace" on neighbors, coworkers, and the wider Bay Area runs through the series and continues as an ongoing ministry.
Growing as a Disciple
The church lays out a clear growth track in its Next Steps material. Step One is Choose Jesus, the decision to trust Christ as Savior and Lord. Step Two is Bible Baptism, the public profession of faith by immersion. Step Three is Personal Growth, which the church supports with two homegrown discipleship resources: Continue, a fourteen-lesson study covering the Word of God, prayer, the Holy Spirit, the life of a disciple, the local church, financial stewardship, and living in light of eternity, and Multiply, a simple guide designed to help ordinary believers start discipling the people God has placed in their lives. Both are offered to anyone interested, either as a student or a teacher.
Reaching the Desi Community
In addition to its English-language service at 10:30 a.m., Bay Area Baptist hosts a Desi Ministry on Sundays at 1:00 p.m., serving the South Asian community in the Bay Area. The service is conducted in the Desi languages and runs alongside the same children's and nursery care available during the morning hour, making it accessible to multigenerational families.
Giving, the App, and Staying Connected
Online giving is available, with options for one-time gifts or recurring donations directed to the general fund, missions, or other designated opportunities. The church's mobile app, available for iOS and Android, delivers announcements, sermon audio, directions, prayer-request submission, and giving in a single place, with text-message updates available for those who opt in. Visitors can also fill out a quick "Tell Us About You" card after a service to let the church know whether it was their first, second, or regular visit.

Pastor Morris Henriquez and His Family
Bay Area Baptist has been led since 2015 by Pastor Morris Henriquez, who came to Fremont after nearly a decade as an assistant pastor in the South Bay. Morris and his wife, Elizabeth, are high-school sweethearts and graduates of West Coast Baptist College in Lancaster, California. Together with their three children, they have made the Bay Area their home and their mission field, with Morris often summarized in the church's own words as having "a passion for God, our church, and the Bay." Youth Leader Stephen Bui rounds out the named staff team, overseeing the Elevate teen ministry.
